You see a flyer which has the following mission written: Do you have what it takes to rid a whole town of its trashy habits in just one week? If you believe that you are the one that can complete this with a little help from your friends gather them and meet next week at Wonderland Park to pick up the mission details packet by the big Oak tree. After reading the mission details decided if you are the ones for the job and give yourselves a team name and pack you bags you are going to Wasteville!

Set up a community recycling center. Set up home recycling centers. Provide residents with curbside recycling bins. Educate community members on how to reduce, reuse and recycle Hold a town meeting and compile a list of the ways to incorporate reduce, reuse and recycle into their new lifestyles.

This list also includes the duties that each manager is to complete. Town Meeting Manager: Job duties include the following Write an announcement that can be published in the local paper describing your project to the community. Be sure to include why you are in Wasteville and what you can do to help them to live “greener”. Be specific with the projects that you and your team members will be conducting (community clean up and home recycling stations). Include dates and times these events are to take place and include a catchy headline to attract as many community members as you can. Be sure to note the dates that you will be in Wasteville. This announcement can be written before you and your team arrives at Wasteville. Hold a Townhome meeting upon you arrival into Wasteville. Inform the residents why you and your team are there and how you can help them. Discuses as a group the damager of not recycling and the benefits of recycling. Take notes of what went on at the meeting including the benefits of recycling, the dangers of not recycling, what can be done at home, the office and at schools to create a “greener” environment. Type out a paper flier that can be posted at each of the household that contains information about what can and cannot be recycled in their home bins. On the back side of the recycling sheet, type out the definitions of the following; reduce, reuse and recycle. Include the date and the times the event will happen. Talk about the different activates that will be taking place, examples may include road side trash pickup, park clean ups, bus stop clean ups elderly and disabled yard pick up and whatever else you can think of. After the event takes place write a news article thanking those who participated in the event and what was accomplished during the cleanup. Make sure to include ways that these areas can remain clean and “green”.

This class takes place at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. This WebQuest is designed for an Earth Science or Biology class. This WebQuest, Recycling Wasteville , navigates students in teams of four, or less if you want them to work in pairs. You will just have them take on two manager roles each. During this WebQuest the students are asked to pick management roles and complete each of the tasks associated with that role. The tasks include defining reduce, reuse and recycle, identifying recyclable items, make fliers of these items, thinking of ways to reduce waste in their lives at school, home and in the community . Depending on how many students you want in a group will effect the amount of time required to complete this assignment. If they are in groups of four, I would recommend one to two class periods and if they are working in pairs I would designate a few periods to this WebQuest. It might be a good idea to talk to each group the first day and see who is managing what activity. Divide students and have them pick their management area. Each manager has a list of activities that must be complete Town Meeting Manager has to write an article to the local paper about the project, hold a town meeting and write up notes about that meeting including benefits of recycling and how the town can go about reducing waste. Household Recycling Manager is to type out flier for the homes explaining what is recyclable and what is not. Also this manager is to define reduce, reuse and recycling while including ways for Wasteville residents to incorporate these process into their lives. Community clean up manager is to prepare a speech for the town home meeting telling residents about what they will be doing on the community clean up day and then writing a thank you letter to the town’s people for their efforts while including the results from the clean up day and how they can continue to keep their community clean and green.

I would recommend showing them how to use the links to navigate from page to page, epically in the process section where they have to click on the earths. Splitting the students into their teams and having the roles established before going over the manager roles may save you some time in explaining each task to each group.
