CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
An Evaluation of the Amnesty International
Site and its Views/Facts on the Death Penalty
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
The motivation of the
authors on the
Amnesty International
site is to promote
Human Rights in a
vast range of areas and
situations. The site’s
political point of view
takes a stance against
the death penalty.
THE SITE’S CLAIM
On the Amnesty International site, they claim that
capital punishment is ineffective. To elaborate, they
believe that the death penalty does not deter crime,
that it does not meet international human rights
standards, that it is racially biased, disregards mental
illness, and that it is unfair.
The site is non-profit and the author of the death
penalty facts hope to achieve clarification with his
information.
TRIANGULATING THEIR CLAIMS
To better clarify the information presented
by Amnesty International about Capital
Punishment I consulted another website,
Oregonians For Alternatives to the Death
Penalty. On this site, they present many of
the same facts given by Amnesty.
However, this site seems
to include more opinion
with its facts. The facts
themselves are not
obscured, but I believe the
authors of this site have
more of an agenda to push
forward. The site is also
non-profit and is run by
activists and a board of
directors.
OADP
CONCLUSION
Overall, I have to say that after
examining the two sites, as well as
others just to be safe, I found that the
claims Amnesty International made on
their site are valid and accurate. The
facts they presented are true and
essentially up-to-date.
FUTURE RESEARCH
Personally, I would be interested to explore the
facts they presented about wrongful executions
and racial profiling when sentencing convicted
offenders to death. To be concise, what impact
does a wrongful conviction discovery have on
family and community, both before it is too late
and after?
