This document provides an overview of how to effectively conduct research by finding and citing credible information sources. It discusses plagiarism and how to avoid it by properly citing sources. The key steps in research are defined as: defining your topic, refining your search terms, determining appropriate sources like books, journals, databases and websites, searching those sources, and evaluating the information found. It emphasizes evaluating sources for credibility and cautions about relying solely on internet sources. Specific databases and the library catalog are demonstrated as good places to start the search process.
This document discusses various ways for researchers to stay up-to-date, including resources offered by the UCD Library such as newspapers, conference proceedings, and theses. It focuses on RSS feeds, describing what they are, how they work, and their advantages like saving time and convenience. However, it notes that off-campus access to subscribed library resources via RSS can sometimes be problematic due to authentication requirements. The document also briefly mentions email discussion lists, subject portals, and other resources researchers can use to keep current.
The document provides summaries of 12 new books available at the Broadwater Library. It describes the plots and genres of each book, including fiction, fantasy, mysteries and biographies. Many of the books sound like they would appeal to both children and young adults interested in stories about friendship, adventure, family and personal growth.
The document provides summaries of 10 books that are options for a Battle of the Books competition. It summarizes The Candy Shop War as involving children doing tasks for a candy shop owner, including potentially stealing. It summarizes Diary of a Wimpy Kid as the comedic journal of a boy navigating middle school. It summarizes Elijah of Buxton as about an 11-year-old boy in Canada trying to help recover money to buy his family's freedom.
The document provides background information on African Americans in the American West. It discusses how some African Americans were kidnapped as slaves, others escaped slavery and some fled to Native American tribes. It describes the removal of Native American tribes from the southeastern US to Oklahoma along the Trail of Tears in the 1830s, with some African Americans traveling with them. The document instructs students to choose a figure from a list of explorers, lawmen, outlaws, settlers and others to research and create a podcast about, focusing on how their life as a black person in the West was impacted.
