The Fair Trade Software Foundation (FTSF) is a non-profit organization that advocates for fair trade partnerships between IT companies in developed and developing countries. The FTSF facilitates these partnerships by monitoring compliance with fair trade principles, such as improving market access and capacity building. The goal is for developing country partners to carry out over 50% of project development and spend 10-20% on knowledge transfer rather than outsourcing. As a pilot, the FTSF launched a project in Kenya to create IT jobs and strengthen the local knowledge economy through partnerships between local and global businesses.

FTSF Requirements: IT Partners should carry out over 50% of the development
process and 10% to 20% of theproject time should be spent on related
knowledge transfer activities.

6. It’s not outsourcing – It’s a co-development partnership
This means raising developing country SMEs employment
potential with increasing productivity from low-value, price-
driven to higher-value, knowledge-based services.
This approach increases job opportunities in a mutually inclusive and
collaborative way: it retains jobs in developed countries while creating
new knowledge intensive opportunities in developing nations.
