State and Local Efforts Help Land Lidl in Alamance County
NC Governor Pat McCrory, NC Commerce Secretary John Skvarla III, and the Economic Development
Partnership of NC announced July 1st that Lidl, one of the fastest growing retailers in
Europe will open a new regional headquarters and distribution center in Alamance
County. The project will create 80 new full-time jobs and 120 hourly positions while
Lidl also plans to invest more than $125 million in the County during the next three
years. Lidl currently operates nearly 10,000 stores in 26 countries throughout Europe.
Their philosophy is focusing on offering customers top quality fresh goods and grocery
products at the most competitive pricing in convenient locations. The project was
made possible in part by a performance-based grant from the One North Carolina
Fund of up to $250,000. The One NC Fund provides financial assistance through local governments to
attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies
receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify
for grant funds. These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches. In addition to NC
Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of NC, other partners that helped with the Lidl
project included the North Carolina Department of Transportation, North Carolina Community College
System, NC Rural Economic Development Division, the Golden Leaf Foundation, NCWorks, Elon
University, City of Graham, City of Mebane, Alamance County, the Alamance County Area Chamber of
Commerce, and the Alamance County Economic Development Foundation.
Making a Difference by Connecting Talent to Jobs
The Alamance NCWorks Career Center is helping Cambro of Mebane connect talent to jobs and eliminate
much time and expense in the process. The center carries out human resource functions such as
accepting applications on company behalf, scheduling
interviews upon their request, organizing job fairs,
providing space to conduct interviews. In collaboration
Alamance Community College (ACC) developed
customized trainings known as the "Cambro Way" to
be offered to the selected hires in order to assure they
understood the specific manufacturing process,
required goals, and overall company expectations.
NCWorks staff utilized Workforce Investment Act
(WIA) funding to create On-the-Job Training (OJT)
plans so Cambro could leverage resources that would
help save the company additional training costs
associated with the hiring and training of new
employees. The Director of the Alamance Chamber
and Economic Development continued to assure
information and resources were delivered to the business as proposed. Cambro recognized these partners
for helping make a difference in their location to the area.
