3. In rural Ethiopia, women and children walk up to six hours to collect water. Most people collect water from shallow, unprotected ponds which they share with animals.

4. Women and girls collect drinking water at a river they share with cattle and other livestock.

5. In just one day, more than 200 million hours of women’s time is consumed for the most basic of human needs — collecting water for domestic use.

6. The jugs women use to carry water back to the village weigh up to 40 pounds! Often, young children are left at home while their mother and older siblings collect water and their fathers work.

7. Millions of women and children spend several hours each day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources. This is time not spent working at an income-generating job, caring for family members, or attending school.

8. One out of four girls and one out of seven boys do not finish elementary school.
