1. ADAPTATION STRATEGY – WATER RESOURCE
MANAGEMENT IN KIRIBATI
LEG NAP workshop for the Pacific region, 09th – 13th July 2017, Nadi, Fiji
2. • Kiribati is an atoll with very limited water resource available
underground.
• Exposure to seawater intrusion due to its proximity to sea.
• Highly prone to contamination from human activities due to
porous soil.
• Population growth (There is a slight increase from the census
in 2010 – 103,000 and 2015 – 117,000).
• Increased number of developments
Vulnerability of water in Kiribati
3. Climate Change hazards & their impacts on water
Climate change variability/hazards Hazards and Impacts
Sea level rise Coastal erosion causing seawater
intrusion into ground water.
Extreme events (storm surges) Causes wave topping and infiltrate
into the ground water
Drought Affects the quality (brackish) and
quantity (decrease in volume) of water
in Kiribati

TATION
PLAN
Increase access to safe and reliable
supplies
Achieve sustainable water resource
management
Improve understanding and monitoring of
water resources and their use
Increase community awareness of and
participation in the protection, management
and conservation of water
Improve governance in the water sector
Decrease unaccounted for water losses,
improve cost recovery and find alternate
sources of water.
• Installation of water harvesting tanks , new
water infiltration gallery system ,
desalination plants (2 completed)
• Training local communities on simple water
treatment – Solar water disinfection (SODIS)
• Expanding water reticulation system.
• Repairing leakages in groundwater pipes –
KAP III
• Regular monitoring on water reserves
• Regulating the water reserve
• Implementation of rainwater harvesting
guideline• Monthly monitoring report produced on the
status of water reserves in terms of quantity.
• Assigning water responsibilities with clear
mandate to relevant Ministries
• Formulation of Drought Response plan for
South Tarawa
• Communication strategy on wise use of water
• Airing of water Shortage alert warnings is regular durin
drought period.
• Increased number of communities participated in SODI
• Schools awareness programs – WASH programs
Policy/Plan
s
Policy objectives
Adaptation activities
• Installing leak detection devices
• Repair leaks in the underground water
pipes
5. • Review and update the national water resource policy to
address emerging problems through a consultative
process:
– Stocking of existing water adaptation problems and assess
their level of effectiveness.
– Identify challenges and gaps in the water sector.
– Map water resources in Kiribati
– Assess the level of vulnerability of water resources to the
impacts of CC over the projected timeframe
– Assess potential barriers to the process of updating the
national water resource policy.
