Victimologists gather and interpret data to answer
questions such as: How many people are harmed by
criminals each year? How rapidly are the ranks of
people who have suffered misfortunes growing?
And, a matter of particular concern, which groups
are targeted the most and the least often? Research-
ers want to find out where and when the majority
of crimes occur, whether predators on the prowl
intimidate and subjugate their prey with their bare
hands or use weapons, and if so, what kinds? Victi-
mologists also want to determine whether indivi-
duals are attacked by complete strangers or people
they know, and how these intended targets act
when confronted by assailants. What proportion
try to escape or fight back, how many are injured,
what percentage need to be hospitalized, and how
much money do they typically lose in an incident?
The answers to basic questions like these, when
taken together, constitute what can be termed the
big picture—an overview of what is really happen-
ing across the United States during the twenty-first
century. The big picture serves as an antidote to
impressions based on direct but limited personal
experiences, as well as self-serving reports circulated
by organizations with vested interests, misleading
media images, crude stereotypes, and widely held

Alex Jones spread lies that the Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax and parents were actors, for which he was ordered to pay over $1 billion in damages. However, defamation lawsuits cannot fully repair the harm caused by such lies. The current media environment makes it lucrative to spread outrageous lies. Alex Jones made tens of millions of dollars annually spreading conspiracy theories and supplement sales. Regulations are needed to make spreading harmful lies less profitable and incentivized. Potential approaches include limiting data collection and use to curb engagement-based models, and updated versions of the Fairness Doctrine requiring the spread of corrections.

The Real Threat to National Security:
Deadly Disease

While the Trump administration is proposing significantly increased military
spending to enhance our national security, it seems to have lost sight of the greatest
national security threat of all: our fight against infectious disease.
We already spend far more on our military than any other country in the world.
To help pay for the increases, President Trump wants to cut back many federal
programs, including those that prepare us to wage war against microbes, the greatest
and most lethal enemy we are ever likely to face. This is where “defense spending”
needs to increase, significantly.
President Trump’s budget would cut funding for the National Institutes of
Health by 18 percent. It would cut the State Department and the United States
Agency for International Development, a key vehicle for preventing and responding
to outbreaks before they reach our shores, by 28 percent. And the repeal of the
Affordable Care Act would kill the billiondollar Prevention and Public Health Fund,
which provides funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to fight
outbreaks of infectious disease. (While the budget also calls for the creation of an
emergency fund to respond to outbreaks, there is no indication that it would offset
the other cuts, or where the money would come from.)
Those cuts will not protect American citizens. They will diminish research and
vaccine development and our ability to respond to the growing threats of antibiotic
resistance and new infectious diseases.

sharing the earth, we have created the ideal scenario for creating and spreading
dangerous microbes. Trade and travel have connected most points on the globe in a

Weapon/Objects Used:
On May 20, 2016, at approximately 18:00, officers responded to the Socks for Feet Outlet
located at 222 Citation Way. According to the Socks for Feet Security Officer Bo Foot, three
people entered the store and began walking down the Big Feet area of the store. Security
Officer Bo Foot observed suspect one take three dozen pairs of the Big Guy brand socks and
place them down his pants. Security Officer Bo Foot then followed the three suspects into the
Hammer Toe section of socks where Security Officer Bo Foot observed suspect two place two
dozen pairs of the Hang Nail Free brand of socks into suspect three’s purse. As Security Officer
Bo Foot approached the suspects the suspects began to run. As Suspect one began to run he
bumped Security Officer Foot causing him to fall to the floor. All three suspects ran out of the
store into the back parking lot of the store.
The store owner Clifford Tonell identified the three suspects as:

Suspect (2) Skeeter Redrum
Suspect (3) Summer Breeze

All three suspects were later apprehended and arrested at the Just for Kicks Martial Arts studio
located at 626 Felony Drive. All of the property was recovered inside Skeeter Redrum’s 1969
Ford Pinto.

Victimologists gather and interpret data to answer
crucial questions such as: How many people are
harmed by criminals each year? Is victimization
becoming more of a problem or is it subsiding as
time goes by? And which groups are targeted the
most and the least often? Researchers want to find
out where and when the majority of incidents
occur, whether predators on the prowl intimidate
and subjugate their prey with their bare hands or
use weapons, and if so, what kinds? It is also impor-
tant to determine whether individuals are attacked
by complete strangers or people they know, and
how these intended targets act when confronted
by assailants. What proportion try to escape or
fight back, how many are injured, what percentage
need to be hospitalized, and how much money do
they typically lose in an incident?

yield statistical portraits of crime victims, the pat-
terns that persist over the years, and the trends
that unfold as time passes; when taken together,
they constitute what can be termed the big picture
