On Call Engineer Happiness - DevOps Days Galway 2017Paul O'Connor
On call is an unfortunate side effect of the technology industry. Outages happen outside business hours, frequently when engineers are sleeping. Using existing tools, and reexamining alerting healthchecks, it is possible to make on call a much happier experience.
In this talk, we will examine how Yelp reduced pager noise, and improved on call engineer happiness, while maintaining stability on their platform.

Editor's Notes
PART ONE: WHY I DO WHAT I DO/WANT TO DO WHAT I DO?
1. HookMy development will give you the time and energy to do what you need to do
While it is possible to work without me some time and energy will be lost, I’m Steve Ward
1. RootHere’s why they need me:
The development of my body and mind was not a mistake it was a calculated journey on my part to develop a system to over come my illness
The development of self is not a science or art, yet I have been very rewarded through business, family, etc that I have had over time
Something of late I have noticed is that storytelling is marketing, so they do go well together that does not mean it is easy your mind and body need to be in good shape for the stress.
Brand Mantra
A marketing story telling fiend, that has lead me to develop a high drive
1. Skills/Qualities
Drive: To develop my system of mind/body which learns and develops to overcome trails, which leads me to over come many challenges along the way but one that is the most bad of them all
Challenges: Something I have come up versus me recently is my ability to organize my train of thought down on paper while being tight with it and on top of that having control over grammar and spelling.
Challenges: Something I have come up versus me recently is my ability to organize my train of thought down on paper while being tight with it and on top of that having control over grammar and spelling.
Reliable: Due to my health concerns I have always wanted to be able to deal with people in such a way that they walk away happy, even if I’m sick while this is me being somewhat of a perfection it also plays into the fact that if something did happen that I would be ready.
Persistent: Which leads me to being very persistent and thinking long term not just for me but for my clients as well
Determined: how is this for Determined, I have started/stopped making a energy/drug product for the past 10 year’s now, a funny story the first time I tried I quickly realized how much paper work was required back then and stopped real fast.
Survivor: I have been through a lot, some of it would break other men and I don’t do that too boast either I could have been dead several times over.
PART THREE: WHAT DO I DO AS A PROFESSIONAL?
Work Experience:development of unnamed energy/drug company
Member of full sail group on marketing, Ebay story resell shop
All jobs held have a fast-paced environment including timed activities, customer service
I work best where I have a chance to grow and see other’s grow fast pace is good yet if it becomes to fast pace one can loose track of ones self, While I may not get along with everyone, I do expect that and get suspicious if a person is not at lest some what arugmentive
The main reason I have always gave people space to work is for one reason IF they could not get this small job done I better find out now before I give them a bigger task so while I might watch someone do something I do not hover over them. A lot of the work I have developed into is building out worlds, even if it just one product and not a full fictional world for instance lets say instead of fleshing out the world of aliens the, I fleshed out Tide the washing powder. I know what your thinking, yet if I could building a world for tide what could I do for aliens then?
I would prefer to be my own boss, a lot has to do with the mindset that I have already built around being my own boss yet IF the opportunity presents itself I would freelance or work at a company. To me work is work, while being your own boss has both con’s and positives at the end of the day you still need to get the work done. I know I mention working with people who might not have the same idea’s that I have, I seek people out who might be software engineers and ask them questions about how things work what would happen if I dropped a energy cell into water or something.
I know I mention working with people who might not have the same idea’s that I have, I seek people out who might be software engineers and ask them questions about how things work what would happen if I dropped a energy cell into water or something, I like to have fun, life is to serious not to have fun
