Italy's commander, Luigi Cadorna, took control of the front in 1915 but proved to be a disastrous leader due to his outdated tactics, though he did successfully defend Trentino and capture the city of Gorizia. Svetoza Borojević commanded Austria-Hungary's forces on the Isonzo front and, as the only field marshal not from Germany, defended Slovenian territory against Italy's attacks. While commanders had more privileges than soldiers early in the war, wearing colorful coats and hats with feathers made them easy targets on the battlefield.
