Nurse is a person who is dedicated to taking care of people in the health care field. Nurses play a role of leader in every step of their career. They use their skills, knowledge and experiences to take care of individual and communities. Therefore, every nurse should be aware of their leadership role within self as well as need to identify weakness which may be due to lacking knowledge and skills. Nursing is an independent profession of health science and has a great influence in shaping healthy work environment. Being A nurse for a few years as well as taking the position of charge nurse, I have found myself having the quality of the leadership traits. I feel that there are more rooms for me to do and learn, which will make me a reliable nursing professional. This paper discusses the weakness and strength of a nurse based on the nurse manager skills tools. The nurse manager inventory skill tool reflects my skills, behavior, and professional accountability, career planning, my journey disciplines and reflective practice reference behaviors.
Personal and professional accountability
When evaluating myself on personal growth, career development, continuing education and certification, I would rate myself in the average range. Despite of being enrolled in school for BSN degree, I still have more to do such as, medical/surgical and orthopedic certification are my area of interest. Currently working to achieve these along with my BSN degree. I am a stroke certified nurse and a member of the American Nurses Association since 2010. After completing my BSN degree, I plan to continue my nursing for a doctorate degree in nursing. I have not been active in the legislation in advocation my fellow nurses nor my patients. However, I rate myself high when it comes to the ethical act and nursing practices. I am highly influenced through the evidence bases practice to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes. It is important for me to demonstrate this behavior as well as show dedication to other fellow nurses to keep the culture of practice and improve the quality of care.
Career planning
With the evolution of health care industry nurses’ responsibility, role, education changes according to the healthcare demand. This evolving of the profession has created an atmosphere for nurses to regulator their career in futures according to the needs of society. According to NCBI “career planning and development provides nurses with a focused strategy to take greater responsibility for engaging in the ongoing planning process that is crucial throughout the major stages of their career (Rebecca Hendren, October 2010)”. Nurses should also continue to develop their knowledge, leadership skills, and competencies with other health care professionals as well. According to Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, sickest patient will only be admitted to hospital, but the less sick patient remains at home (Donner, G. J., & Wheeler, M. M. (2001, June). FORGOT MY SEECOND RESPONSE IS DUE TONIGHT I THOUGHT I HAD UNTIL TOMORROW
BUT ITS DUE AT MIDNIGHT IntroductionMy name is Amalfam, a lot of people call
me Jenine even its my middle name but because it is easier for them to pronounce. I
graduated with my ADN in 2011 from Nigeria, and my BSN in 2020(3 weeks back). Back in
Nigeria I specialized in ophthalmology and I enjoyed being an ophthalmic nurse before I
migrated to the state. Mostly I worked in a nursing home as a charge nurse, nevertheless,
out of my 9years total nursing years, 3 of them have been in skilled nursing home. I really
enjoyed working in nursing home as it let me work with various types of patients with
many different disease conditions. I am a mother of 3 (1boy and 2girls), who are very little
3year, 2 and 10month who keeps me busy all day with various activity, so it allowed me the
opportunity and flexibility to still be able to attend their activities, I so glad to start my FNP
program, as I plan to go back to my community someday and give back what I have learn,
and finally am so glad because I was just offered a position to become the ADON at my
facility. After completing my BSN, I was then faced with the task of finding a graduate
program. I knew that I needed an on line program because of family and other things. I also
knew that I needed an institution that would foster my love of helping others and my desire
to make a change in the lives of those I care for because one of my desire is to give back to
my community. I chose Walden University because their mission and vision statement
aligned perfectly with my goals. Walden University: Nursing Graduate Discussion
Responses Walden’s Vision, Mission, and Social
ChangeWalden’s Vision, Mission, and Goals are precisely what an educational program
should be. The vision of Walden states that it “envisions a distinctively different 21st-
century learning community, etc. (Walden, 2019). The health care industry is constantly
changing and fast growing, this is what is required so that people like this writer with kids
and other things to deal with can still achieve their educational goals and balance family.
The Convenience and flexibility give people the opportunity to plan study time around the
rest of their day, instead of the other way around, study and work at their convenience.
Walden’s mission Focus on Social Change which encourages and aids collective
partnerships, act which lead to meaningful action for social change to provide a diverse
community of career professional’s opportunities to effect positive social change is what
this writer have always looked forward too. The management and administrative part of
2. nursing is where I want to see a positive and social change. Walden describes positive social
change as “a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to
promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations,
institutions, cultures, and societies” (Walden, 2019). All of these qualities are key objectives
that I have for myself and hope to obtain the knowledge to be able to do so when I have
completed the program. However, particularly, culture is what stands out to me. I feel that
culture in an environment in which effort, teamwork, and accountability, are the focus of
patient care, only good outcomes can come from this. This type of culture is how I always
approach my nursing career and that I hope to achieve on a higher level when becoming a
scholar-practitioner. Walden University: Nursing Graduate Discussion
Responses Walden’s MSN Program OutcomesA lot of
Walden’s program results clearly are connected to my professional and academic goals.
Eventually my goal is to become the FNP in a hospital coming from Nigeria and did not
complete my ADN here in the state, This is a tough goal to achieve, for me couple with
having 3little ones, however I fully believe that with this program I will have all of the
education, training, help and guidance to be able to do so. Personally, there are two major
program outcomes that mostly stand out for my own professional goals. First outcome that
stands out for my profession and goals is to “Evaluate health needs of diverse populations
for necessary teaching/coaching functions based on specialist nursing knowledge to
restore/promote health and prevent illness/injury (Walden, 2019). At my facility, nurses
are to evaluate needs of the patient, educate them and promote health, wellness by
preventing gaps in their care, teaching them how to effectively manage their health and
communicate with their providers. This is the ultimate key for patients to have good
outcomes and that is what I hope to be able to accomplish as an FNP. Another is “Display
ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories/ethical
principles (altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, social justice) in accordance with
ethically responsible, legally accountable, specialist nursing practice” (Walden, 2019). I feel
that working as a charge nurse and hopefully accepting my next position as the ADON of my
facility after the pandemic, is going to be tough, as we all know that the ADON always face
the huge hurdle of Assisting with management of the Department of Nursing, including
evaluation of staff. Evaluate and act around complaints, failed audits, and staff problems.
Maintain and update audit, compliance, and legal documentation, including analyzing
patient and staff data. So, I hope to change the negative thoughts that Nurses have about
being an ADON. I used to be one of them and felt am always ignored by the ADON, however
now that I am on the opposite side of it, I have much more clarity as to why they do what
they do because they have a lot of work to get done in a short period of time. This outcome
can be a huge accomplishment for me to obtain and at the same time working toward my
professional goal because while we as nurses have an obligation to remain ethical and
provide care to patients in a professional manner, there is still need to work and collaborate
as a team to enhance good patient outcome and job satisfaction. Walden University:
