Self Assessment Intro to Writing Arts Spring 2011 Dawn Lyn Melnyk
According to David Richard Moore there are three distinct levels to technology literacy Identify technologies relevant to a task Understanding how to use the technology and how to navigate it’s interface Understanding the inner-working or structure of the technology (Moore 2010)
Twitter I began to tweet in March and by April I was live tweeting. I also learned how to use a hash tag as a communicate people and discuss a certain topic. I also learned that Twitter is not Facebook which once I opened my mind to this I was able to understand why it is useful and a real purpose. I explored the website and found this definition which helped me “to identify the technologies relevant task” (Moore, 2010) “Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you answer the question, "What are you doing?" by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called "tweets", to your friends, or "followers." .”(Twitter, 2011) I also learned that it can be used for personal use and can also be useful to businesses as well as college students communicating and taking tweet notes about what they learned. I have learned how to navigate the site first by creating a profile following others, sending tweets as well as sending live tweets. I now understand how to use twitter and have stopped comparing it to Facebook!
Tumblr I previously though Tumblr was also like Facebook. I thought if you had a Tumblr profile it was just status updates. I now know that Tumblr is for blogging. I also figured out blogging is a Web Log I have created a Tumblr account I am following others postings and I am posting my own blogs. I also know that blogging is not just words, it can be pictures, songs, it is an expression of yourself, a way of being creative, it can be used to help someone, to promote something, stay connected with people. I am able to use Tumblr to communicate what I think is writing and I am able to view others thoughts about what is writing. I also understand that when I reblog I need to keep the original source information so I give credit to the person who originally posted it. I also used Tumblr to help me keep track of my technological literacy
Adding a Hyperlink By mid April I learned how to add a hyperlink to my postings. I think this is useful because you are able to give credit or follow up information to what you are putting out there. In class Professor Teston used my posting as an example. I went back and changed the hyperlink to go to the book that I got the cupcake decorating idea from! I understood how it worked and was able to correct it to be accurate as well as useful.
Realization……. I thought being technologically literate is understanding how it works, BUT what it really is, is to use the right technology for the task that you need to do. WOW moment! Or should I say DUH! Moment???
Another great quote that helped me to understand what is means to be technologically literate which enables me to be technologically literate.
Hello Google Docs I think I love you! What is Google docs? Google Docs is a free, Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and data storage service offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users. ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Docs I can actually work on a document with people in a group. I can’t tell you how many times I have worked on projects with other classmates and we emailed and edited in word and sent back and worth. I now know the correct tool to use. Also I don’t have to worry about loosing information, or a flash drive.
Looking back…To my previous slide I used a definition from Wikipedia, I felt this was an acceptable source because I learned.. (see below) I previously had been taught by teachers this was not acceptable because anyone can make changes and you don’t know who it is or if it is correct.
Control + Print Screen Learning the usefulness of adding a screen shot to demonstrate my abilities or add to what I am trying to explain is extremely useful. I am now able to give specific examples of my work. Which you can see throughout my story of becoming technologically literate 
I know how to use Twitter but how do I save those oh so special tweets? Twapper Keeper can be used to keep track of tweets a few different ways, to be technologically literate you would need to pick the best fit for your purpose
Bitly the URL shortner
TwitterPros & Cons It’s Free! Can “tweet” updates Keep in contact with friends/family Use it to promote business Can get answers to questions Get news Short messages, only 140 characters Need to have followers to get your tweets out there Since you can have live tweet and communicate instantly, you may become an Agoraphobic?!?
Thank you for joining me on my journey to discovering how I have become technologically literate. I hope you enjoyed the ride. Please exit by clicking on the white X inside the red box at the top of your screen. Dawn 
