Oracle launched new T5 and M5 servers based on 16-core SPARC processors running the Solaris operating system. The T5 processor provides twice the performance of previous T4 models, while M5 systems promise 10 times faster database performance. Oracle claims the new servers significantly outperform earlier SPARC technology and make Oracle more competitive against IBM and HP in the Unix server market. The launches complete Oracle's plan to upgrade its entire SPARC/Solaris server portfolio inherited from Sun Microsystems.
