volunteer training; it will explain and
clarify why we have certain rules and
regulations, and what you must know in
the way of safety and infection control.

2. We are so glad you’re a part of the
Cancer Institute Volunteer Team!
The Cancer Institute has had devoted and
committed volunteers since the doors opened in
September, 1989. These volunteers have formed
the core of volunteer responsibilities and are the
heart of the program.
Volunteers make every day better for the
patients at the Cancer Institute, spreading good
cheer and fulfilling our auxiliary’s mission to
provide information, service, compassion
and hope to those whose lives
are touched by cancer.

4. FIRE SAFETY
•Rescue the endangered
patient.
• Activate an alarm box.
• Contain the fire and
smoke; close doors.
• Evacuate if instructed.

on the back of your volunteer badge

Please remember to wear your blue
vests/smocks/polos when you volunteer, and no
blue jeans, spandex, or flip flops
Please leave gum in your purse or pocket
Please wait to text or make phone calls until
shift is over (if necessary, please do so in the
volunteer office)

9. Medical advice is limited to the
medical staff only; please refrain from consulting
patients.
Even if you are a retired nurse or have lived
through this experience yourself, we cannot give
personal advice to the patients. We are here for
patient support ONLY. This applies to all of our
volunteers. You are here to guide the patient and
be with them for encouragement, not to help with
the medical side of their treatment.

Wear your ID badge at all times when here.
Please only scan your ID badge in and out
of the parking deck when you are here to
volunteer (not for patient visits, medical
appointments, etc.) as we pay for your
parking each time you scan it.

11. We ask that volunteers be dependable and
punctual in attendance.
Volunteers are asked to notify the
Volunteer Services Office or the Cancer
Institute Gift Shop if they have a conflict
or need to change their schedule.
Volunteers are asked not to solicit or sell
anything or to accept personal gratuities
while on duty at the Cancer Institute.

12. Volunteer Rules
Because we are a state institution, we ask our
volunteers not to initiate a religious discussion
with patients, family members or visitors. If the
patient would like to discuss their religious
beliefs or spiritual issues, please observe the
following suggestions:
• Listen attentively and sensitively to the
patient
• Show respect for the patient’s point of view
but do not offer your point of view
• When appropriate, offer the services of a
UAMS Chaplain (501-412-9340)

13. We report your volunteer hours every year not only to
the top administration here at UAMS, which tracks
volunteer efforts throughout the hospital, but also to
a number of different organizations in the state
including the AR Hospital Auxiliary Association as well
as the Chamber of Commerce & the City of LR.
It’s very important that we log your hours,
so please remember to sign in/out each time!

15. Protected Health Information (PHI) is information created or received
by UAMS, regardless of form, that can be used to
directly or indirectly identify an individual.
PHI includes the following examples of information about a patient: name,
address, telephone or fax number, email address, date of birth, social
security number, name of employer, admission or discharge dates, medical
record number, medical diagnosis or health condition, health beneficiary,
license number, or photographs.
• Ask yourself, “Do I need to know this to do my job?” before looking at PHI.
• Speak softly when discussing patients’ health when others are present.
• Tell your supervisor if you see patient information in an open trash
container or left behind in public spaces.
HIPAA prevents pictures of volunteers, visitors, patients or families to be
taken or distributed without proper documentation of a release.

The Joint Commission on the
Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations sets standards
for healthcare organizations
and issues accreditation to
organizations that meet
those standards.

18. We never know when we might be visited by the Joint
Commission, so it’s important that we:
» Know the emergency codes & procedures
(listed on your ID badges)
» Know the fire plan (RACE)
» Are wearing ID badges for proper identification
**If you are unsure of how to answer a question asked
during a Joint Commission visit, you can always direct the
visitor to the front desk for further assistance.

22. The Seed of Hope celebration began over 6 years ago.
During each one, we celebrate a patient’s milestone
reached, whether it’s their last day of chemotherapy or
radiation, or they are cancer free, or anything that they
want to celebrate with their family and friends.
If you hear the all-call throughout the building saying
‘Come join us on the 1st floor for a Seed of Hope
celebration,’ please come down if you can. It is our
hope that one day, through the power of research-
driven treatment, the Seed of Hope will overflow with
tokens symbolizing countless survivors who have
won the battle against cancer.
