The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Grant Program is an IRS initiative that provides funding to organizations offering free tax preparation services to underserved groups. In 2011, $12 million in grants were awarded to 179 organizations across the US. This year, the IRS is accepting applications from May 23rd to June 30th for multi-year funding to help VITA programs extend their reach, increase electronic filing capacity, improve quality control, enhance volunteer training, and improve return accuracy.
