he African Union’s New Partnership for Africa’s Development
(NEPAD) Agency, African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), Office of
the UN Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), the Economic Commission
for Africa (ECA) and the Department of Public Information (DPI) have
recently co-organised a series of activities to mark the “Africa Week” (13-17
October) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the side-lines
of the UN General Assembly Debate on Africa.
This year scores the 51st Anniversary celebration of the establishment of
the Organization of African Unity (OAU). It is a little more than a decade since
the formation of the African Union, which seeks to promote “an integrated,
prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing
a dynamic force in global arena”.
While many African countries and societies have made prodigious
progress in peace and security, human rights, good governance and the
rule of law, more remains to be done, several senior United Nations
said during a high-level panel discussion evaluating the continent’s
development.
“The Africa we want is an integrated, peaceful and prosperous
continent. It must be a place where employment opportunities are
available for those who seek jobs, and where children go to bed
with full bellies, rather than hunger pangs,” said General Assembly
President Sam Kutesa at a panel discussion at UN Headquarters in
New York.
With a population of about 1.1 billion people, a combined GDP of
over 2 trillion dollars, and impressive rates of economic growth, the
continent continues to attract investment, added Mr. Kutesa, who has
previously also served as Uganda’s Minister for Foreign Affairs.

that Kenya Airways phased
out all their six B767-300ER’s
which faithfully served the airline
for many years, and much longer
than initially anticipated, as the
state of the art B787-8 Dreamliner

That is now all history and the
airline’s accountants in particular
and the shareholders in general
were no doubt happy to see the

elsewhere, replaced with newer

Also gone are the Embraer

their larger ‘siblings’ which carry

South Africa and France entering into
nuclear agreement
British Airways is keeping customers ‘appy’, with new features introduced to its
popular iPhone app this month.
South Africa and France entered into
a nuclear agreement, articulated the
government. The similar agreement
was signed three weeks before with
Russia. During the event with Russia the
Minister of Energy of South Africa hinted
that the deal will be followed by some
more intergovernmental agreements
with France, China, South Korea, United
States and Japan. “This paves the way
for establishing a nuclear procurement
process, this agreement initiates the
preparatory phase for the possible
deployment of French nuclear technology
in South Africa,” articulated the French
Foreign Affairs Minister, Laurent Fabius
in a statement. “The expansion of South
Africa’s nuclear programme will yield
tremendous benefit for the country without
a sharp increase in green house gas
emissions,” these points were articulated,

power supply and employment of job,
from the Minister which differs from that

“The president works with
Cabinet on the matter,” Mac Maharaj,
the spokesperson of the Presidency
conveyed. Wolsey Barnard, the energy
department acting general articulated
that there was some misunderstanding
about the authorization of the specifics in
the Russian deal. He also mentioned that
South Africa is seeking at different options

It is then only a matter of

four additional such aircraft into

by 2021 the passenger fleet should
reach 107 passenger jets (besides
up to 12 dedicated cargo planes)
which by then will be serving some
115 destinations in 70 countries
across all the continents.
A second brand new aircraft
will join the fleet just a few days
after the sixth Dreamliner has
arrived, when a brand new B737-

Orange Botswana partners Ericsson for enhanced efficiency
and quality of service
Orange Botswana has entered into
a multi-year managed services
agreement with Ericsson that will have
the latter manage network operations
for Orange Botswana.
This is an effort by Orange to
optimize its network and IT operations
with the aim to further improve Quality
of Service and customer experience.
Under the terms of the contract,
Ericsson will assume responsibility
of the operational
management and field
maintenance of Orange
Botswana’s network

agreement therefore
allows Orange Botswana
to leverage on Ericsson’s
technical expertise and
experience to maintain
and further improve its
network performance.
This will then give Orange
the edge to focus on its core business
of delivering superior products and
services that cater to the needs of its
customers. As a result, 27 employees
from Orange Botswana joined Ericsson
as of the 1st September 2014 on terms
similar to those enjoyed at Orange
Botswana.
Philippe Baudin, Chief Executive
Officer, Orange Botswana, said: “This
agreement with Ericsson reflects our
long-standing partnership, and our
ongoing commitment to deliver on a
simple promise: to be first for service,
value, and innovation.”
Karl Johan-Nybell, Vice President,
Managed Services, Ericsson sub-
Saharan Africa, commented: “As
Africa’s leading provider of managed
services, we are committed to bringing
our global expertise and experience in
this field to bear on this engagement,
with the aim of affording Orange’s
customers quality services and
superior network performance.”
The agreement extends Ericsson’s
managed services leadership and
footprint across sub-Saharan Africa.
So far, Ericsson has signed more than
300 managed services contracts in
more than 100 countries and provides
managed services for networks that
serve over one billion subscribers
worldwide.

The African Water Facility has
announced on October 10, 2014, that
it had offered the Hadejia-Jama'are-
Komadugu-Yobe Basin Trust Fund a
€2 million grantfor the preparation of a
strategic action plan to develop water
resources in the Komadugu-Yobe basin
in Northern Nigeria. Over 15 million
people depend on the basin and stand
to benefit from this project, particularly
farmers, pastoralists and fishermen.
The economy of the basin is highly
dependent on freshwater resources,
particularly on the livelihoods generated
from the wetland ecosystems, including
agriculture, fishing, livestock production
and related activities. Kano city and other
major urban towns and rural settlements
have also seen a significant increase in
water demand for human consumption
and other urban needs.
The project is designed to help
meet these water needs and address
the associated challenges through an
integrated water resources management
approach focused on the reoperation of
the Tiga and Challawa Gorge dams.
Particularly, it will help enhance
urban water supply, agriculture water
management, aquaculture, rangeland
management, as well as ecosystem
services through enhanced water
resources allocation, utilisation and
management.
“This new action plan is poised
to address, in a more sustainable

Council (ECOSOC) was focused on
“The Africa We Want: Support of
the United Nations System to the
African Union’s Agenda 2063” – a
development vision that is driven
by Africa’s own citizens.
The panel strike out what
has become informally known as
“AfricaWeek”(13to17October)at
UN Headquarters, a series of high-
level discussions and events held
on the margins of the 193-member
General Assembly’s annual
consideration of the landmark
New Partnership for Africa’s
Development (NEPAD), and other
critical subjects concerning for the
continent.
Joining Mr. Kutesa were Jan
Eliasson, UN Deputy-Secretary-
General; Maged Abdelaziz, UN
Under-Secretary-General and
Special Adviser on Africa; and
several representatives of the
African Union (AU), including
Smail Chergui, its Commissioner
forPeaceandSecurityandAnthony
Mothae Maruping, Commissioner
for Economic Affairs.
They all indicated Africa’s
development in attaining the
Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) and developing a
shared vision for the post-2015
sustainable development agenda.
In the past decade, Africa’s
economies cultivated at a rate of
5.6 per cent on average, making it
the world’s fastest growing region
after East Asia.
“To further accelerate
this growth, African countries
will need to modernize their
agriculture, industrialize more,
add value to their vast natural
resources, innovate and create
more employment opportunities
especially for the youth,” said Mr.
Kutesa.
Addressing the challenge
of insufficient infrastructure,

particularly energy, transportation
and technology, remains
precarious. Access to healthcare
and other basic social services is
still low. And vocational training
and skills development training
remain inadequate.
Mr. Kutesa admired the
constructive work of the
New Partnership for Africa’s
Development (NEPAD) for its
enormous latent to link and open
up Africa for trade and investment.
“There are huge transformative
projects for which we must
mobilize financing. The support of
the UN System, the international
community and continued
partnership with the African
countries remains instrumental,”
said Mr. Kutesa.
Addressing the ECOSOC
today, Deputy Secretary-General
Jan Eliasson reiterated the UN’s
commitment to work “hand in
hand” with Africa on its most
pressing challenges including
assisting in the response to the
current unprecedented Ebola
outbreak in West Africa.
The UN has, among other
efforts, prepared its first-ever
emergency health mission–the
United Nations Mission for Ebola
Emergency Response (UNMEER)
which is “working hard to make
a different on the ground: treat
the infected, preserve stability,
prevent the spread of Ebola and
ultimately defeat it.”
The Deputy Secretary-General
defined other initiatives aimed
at making a difference in Africa,
specifically the Every Woman
Every Child initiative which has
already advanced women’s and
children’s health in the region. On
Energy, he said that leaders are
coming together to scale up access
to clean energy. And the Call to
Action on Sanitation is catalysing
action in providing access to
toilets, which 2.5 billion people
currently lack.
Moreover, the Africa Climate-
Smart Agriculture Alliance will
make certain that amplified
efficiency and food security go
hand-in-hand with decreased
carbon emissions for nearly 25
million farming households by
2025. On a regional level, the
UN will endure to support the
Economic Commission for Africa
which is functioning meticulously
with the AU to determine capacity
development needs for the
application of Agenda 2063.
In the zone of peace and
security, Mr. Eliasson said that the
UN continues to support capacity
building and to develop joint
policies under the several AU-UN
initiatives. Here in New York,
the UN continues to galvanise
the support of the international
community for several vulnerable
countries, including Somalia, Mali
and the Central African Republic
(CAR).
The Africa Week at the UN
General Assembly Debate has
simplified and celebrated the
African narratives of past, present
and future that would, certainly,
enthuse and energise the African
population to accelerate a forward
looking agenda of Pan-Africanism,
the African Union's Agenda 2063.
The NEPAD Agency, an
African Union strategic structure
for pan-African socio-economic
development, is both a vision and a
policy agenda for Africa in the 21st
century. NEPAD is a fundamentally
new intervention, headed by
African leaders, to address critical
challenges facing the continent.
The African Peer Review
Mechanism (APRM) was
recognised on 9 March 2003 by the
Heads of State and Government
Implementation Committee of
the NEPAD Agency as a tool for
self-monitoring for improved
governance.

launched in the EU before tackling
the home market of South Africa,
has already signed up nearly 1000
merchants, mainly restaurants,
and is growing at the rate of 50-60
new merchants a week.
“For a mobile payment system
to work it must add significant
value to both consumers and
merchants,” says Wiggill. “For
the consumer, Zapper adds
convenience as well as an
important layer of security - your
credit card cannot be cloned or
skimmed in a restaurant. But
merchants need something more.
For them, Zapper is a way to
engage more meaningfully with
their customers. Every client gets
a portal where they can see who
their customers are, how often
African Water Facility supports the
development of Komadugu-Yobe
Basin in Nigeria
and what they are buying, and
create rewards and incentives
right inside the app to keep those
customers coming back.”
Zapper also, says Wiggill,
makes it easy for merchants to cash
up at the end of the day. “We are
integrated directly into the point
of sale software, so unlike some
other mobile payment systems,
Zapper payments don’t have to
be processed separately. There is
also no cumbersome integration
needed - it’s just a matter of
sending a software update.”
“Mobile payments are
currently an exciting fringe
development,” says Wiggill. “Our
goal at Zapper is to make sure
they become mainstream. We’re
making the transition easy for
merchants by carrying the costs of
setting up, providing the first three
months free and giving customers
a voucher for their first Zapper
transaction. Those who start trying
out the technology now will have a
head start in understanding how
to use to benefit their businesses.”
"At PayGate we are continually
researching efficient, secure and
stable mobile solutions to offer
our merchants," says Williamson.
"Zapper is all of these."
Balancing-Act Africa
way, fundamental water resources
management issues that are currently
preventing millions of people from living
better lives in Northern Nigeria,” said
Akissa Bahri, Coordinator of the African
Water Facility. “We anticipate for the
ecological services and the livelihoods
that are dependent on the basin’s river
system to be fully regenerated, bringing
a much-needed boost to the local and
regional economy.”
The strategic action plan will outline
the short- to long-term actions and
related investments needed to restore
rational water management in the basin
through re-optimisation and re-operation
of the Tiga and Challawa Gorge dams,
identified as primary solution to improve
the use of the basin’s water resources
and to increase water flow in the lower
part of the basin and to the Lake Chad.
The Hadejia-Jama'are-Komadugu-
Yobe Basin Trust Fund will be executing
the project in partnership with the
Nigeria Integrated Water Resources
Management Commission. The Fund
is jointly funded by six states of Bauchi,
Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Plateau and Yobe,
in collaboration with the Nigerian Federal
Government.
The new plan also presents an
opportunity for greater collaboration
between Nigeria and the Komadugu-
Yobe Basin riparian countries, which
should lead to increased mutual benefits.

A
gro-food processing in Africa is a sector that is
not only open for new investments, but one that
is infact viable. Africa is a continent that has
the highest returns in agriculture and food processing
industry.
With India’s interference, Africa can build
capacity to develop sustainable and competitive
local processors within food sector value chains, to
improve the supply of high quality, nutritious food
and to increase demand for the crops of small farmers.
Without doubt, India has the capability to unlock the
investment potential in Africa.
Africa is now a continent that is looking for
partners and not donors. It is now securely positioned
as a global investment destination of choice. In 2012-
13 alone, the continent is expected to grow by 5%
and it is estimated that Africa’s GDP could be US$
2.6 trillion by 2020. While it is clear that individual
countries perform economically with different levels
of success, there are significant business opportunities
across the continent driven by an insatiable demand
for Africa’s resources.
African economic growth remains largely
commodity based on exports of oil, minerals and
agricultural commodities with little or no processing
involved.
Food processing sector is poised to maintain
the growth momentum in the future. It’s an exciting
time to be an African working in Africa. Needless to
mention that India is world’s second largest producer
of food next to China, and has the potential of being the
biggest with the food and agriculture sector. The food
processing industry is one of the largest industries
in India- it is ranked fifth in terms of production,
consumption, export and expected growth. The last
two decades have seen revitalization in relations
between Africa and India.
In the recent years, there has been a shift from
conventional farming of food grains to horticulture
which includes fruits, vegetables, ornamental crops,
medicinal and aromatic plants, spices, plantation crops
which include coconut, cashew nuts and cocoa and
allied activities. India is now a master in the agro and
food processing industry. Without doubt, India has the
capability to unlock the investment potential in Africa.
Many of the processing technologies used in
Sub-Saharan Africa are at a small scale and use
traditional or rudimentary level technology. There is
a wide assortment of indigenous raw materials, some
of which are in specific micronutrients. Many of the
processing methods are however labour intensive,
and there is potency to adapt the new methods
by using modern techniques to minimizing loss in
quality, increase shelf life and encourage continued

Our country is also a great
location for growing your
business in other parts of
the African continent. We

our energy generation
programme.
H.E. Mr. Paul Kagame
President of Rwanda
H.E. Mr. Jacob Zuma
President of South Africa
With the firm pledge of the government,
it will carry on to focus on agriculture
which is considered as the main
backbone to development, and as one
way of affirming a rapidly growing
population. This was made clear by
the Minister of Agriculture and Animal
Resources Dr. Agnes Kalibata during the
2012 Population and Housing Census
result presentation that was held at the
Kigali Serena Hotel.
The Minister noted The different
agricultural developments we have
today were not there 10 years back
and government has continued to
develop more strategies such as land
consolidation, land management, the
private sector has been involved more in
agriculture, tradable commodities have
increased for the past 5 years, farmers
continue to be sensitized on good
agriculture practices and with all these
more production is expected which will
address food security hence cater for the
growing population of the country.
More health facilities have been
built, children immunized, mosquito nets
supplied plus the constant strengthening
of the Community Health Based
Insurance (CHBI), which all contribute
to the wellbeing of Rwandan, hence has
improved life expectancy increasing on
population, Murangwa alleged.
The health sector therefore saw
increase in non- private health facilities
from 579 in 2010 to 720 in 2011 before
the last PHC was concluded. In the same
report, it was yet again noted that the
number of people who are educated in
the country had upturn and therefore
such a progress could help recover on
agriculture hence mend on productivity.
Other enlargements in the same
report are seen in poverty reduction
which now stands at a 37.8% of which
one million people are below the
poverty line. It is noted that 80% of the
housing units in Rwanda are occupied
by owners whereas 15% by tenants.
The United Nation Resident Coordinator
Lamin Maneh appreciated such findings
which he said would give the Rwanda
government a clear way of executing the
set up development activities.
PHC dissemination which
has happened immediately after
enumeration is an indication of the
government commitment to have timely
data for evidence-based policy making
and accountability, Lamin Maneh said.
Such results will therefore inform
us today of who we are and where we
live and therefore will allow calculations
for where Rwanda stands on different
indicators that measure the progress in
health, education, plus other social and
economic sectors, he added.
Agriculture is
the backbone of
Rwanda
Agriculture remains a
crucial cornerstone to Africa’s
economic transformation,
and there are many examples
where it has been pivotal to
the realized growth, including
among others in Ethiopia,
Uganda, Ghana, and my own
country, Rwanda.

consumption.
With India’s interference, Africa can build
capacity to develop sustainable and competitive local
processors within food sector value chains, to improve
the supply of high quality, nutritious food and to
increase demand for the crops of small farmers. India’s
economic growth is easing a new phase of south- south
engagement, especially with regard to its long standing
relationship with its ‘near neighbours’ in Africa.
The reinvigoration of the Africa-India relationship
has the potential to create a new platform for south-
south dialogue and a mutually beneficial partnership
that can enhance developmental prospects in both
Africa India. The availability of natural resources,
vast unutilized arable land, best agroclimatic
conditions and efforts by the Government of Africa
to lease fertile land to foreign companies, presence
of a vibrant and fast-growing financial sector besides
availability of affordable manpower are some of
the key factors that help sustain and strengthen the
India-Africa trade relations in agriculture and food
processing, according to an expert. Africa is wooing
agriculture and food processing majors to partner and
support agriculture related activities. The continent is
a promising investment hub for many Indian food and
agriculture companies.
If agricultural experts from India can provide the
required support to grow and sustain sowing and
harvesting activities, it will definitely support feeding
many hungry mouths, given the fertile land access in
Africa. With this, Indian companies can infuse the right
technology and can generate local employment also.
There is a significant presence of Indian agricultural
firms and food processing companies in Africa. These
include Tata Group, Karuturi Global, Shapoorji Pallonji
Co, BHO Bio, Jaipurias of RJ Corp, Whitefield Cotton
Farm, Verdanata Harvests, S P Energy Solutions,
Sannati Agro Farm Enterprises and Ruchi Soya.
The Government of India too is playing the role of a
channel in assisting its food and agriculture companies
increase their attendance in Africa. The Ministry of
Food Processing Industries is planning to set up a
food processing cluster in Africa. The proposed cluster
would entail an investment of Rs 117 crore to be spent
primarily on the setting up of common infrastructure
for food processing parks which includes cold storage,
food testing labs, incubation centres, standard
designed factories, pre-cooling chambers and other
modern technologies used by the industry.
The tax concessions and leased land concept
have seen companies here opt for an African trail
even if they are remotely associated with agriculture
and food processing. For instance, infrastructure
major Shapoorji Pallonji Co received 50,000 leased
hectares in Ethiopia and is likely to
consider its foray into agriculture in the
coming years. There is also considerable
interest evinced for the tea gardens in
Africa which are known to have some
of the best black teas in the world. The
regions of Malawi, Kenya and Tanzania
are home to the best tea estates,
according to a food exporter.
To sum up, the African continent
has great potency for food production.
Private- Public Partnership is requisite
to improve food processing in Africa.
Private enterprises and entrepreneurs
are rapidly exploiting new business
opportunities in domestic food markets,
as seen in many African countries.

Kenya's Kipchoge, Jeptoo win
at Chicago Marathon
E
liud Kipchoge and Rita
Jeptoo won Chicago
Marathon titles, completing
only the fourth Kenyan double title
sweep at the event but the second
in as many years.
Kipchoge, a two-time Olympic
5,000m-medalist competing for
only his fourth time at the 26.2-
mile distance, won in two hours,
four minutes and 11 seconds to
defeat his countryman Sammy
Kitwara by 17 seconds.
Dickson Chumba was third in
2:04:32, completing the eighth
Kenyan podium sweep in the past
14 events and second in a row.
Jeptoo, 33, defended
her title in 2:24:35 and
collected her fourth
marathon triumph in a
row since settling for
second at Chicago in 2012
behind Atsede Baysa,
having swept the Boston
and Chicago crowns this
year and last.
I'm the queen of
Chicago, Jeptoo said.
Ethiopia's Mare
Dibaba, a 2012 Olympian
and the third-place
finisher in Boston, was
second, more than a
minute off the pace, with
Kenya's Florence Kiplagat
third in 2:25:57.
Windy conditions
greeted runners from
more than 100 nations in
the 37th edition of the event.
Kipchoge, 29, took $155,000 in
prize money and bragging rights
over long-time Ethiopian track
rival Kenenisa Bekele, the three-
time Olympic champion and 5,000
and 10,000 world record holder
who finished fifth in 2:05:51 in
only his second marathon start.
Kipchoge, who took
5,000-meter silver at the 2008
Beijing Olympics and bronze
four years earlier at Athens and
captured a 2003 world title at the
distance, won his marathon debut
last year at Hamburg.
The Kenyan podium trio
pulled away from the lead pack
after 20 miles and Kipchoge left
his countrymen behind in the
penultimate mile.
Kipchoge was six seconds off
his personal best, set last year at
Berlin, but had the third-fastest
winning time in race history.
Kipchoge finished 26 seconds
off the course record set last year
by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto, who
did not try to defend his crown but
instead won last month's Berlin
Marathon in a world record time
of 2:02:57.
Kenya's Bernard Koech,
runner-up to Kipchoge in
Rotterdam this year, was fifth in
2:08:30.
Jeptoo, coming off a course-
record run of 2:18:57 in Boston,
was wll off her 2013 Chicago
winning time of 2:19:57.
AmericanAmyHastingssurged
ahead early in quest of the first
Chicago triumph by a US woman
since 2005, but by mile eight she
was caught by the pack and settled
for a fifth-place finish in 2:27:03.
Kiplagat, the world half-
marathon record holder, and
Dibaba battled Jeptoo into the
23rd mile before the defending
champion began pulling away.
American Joshua George won
his fourth men's wheelchair title
in 1:32:12 while Russian-born
American Tatyana McFadden
won her fifth women's wheelchair
crown, and fourth in a row, in
1:44:50.

ENCOUNTER WITH EDITOR12
Owner / Publisher / Editor: Mr. Kirit Sobti from 3rd Floor, Plot No. 3, Block PSP-IV, Service Centre Opp. Sector-11 (Extn.), Rohini, Delhi-85
Printed at LIPEE SCAN PVT. LTD. 89 DSIDC SHED Okhala Phase 1, New Delhi
Ambassador Soni, you have a
distinguished career, a former
Indian Diplomat, an industrialist
and definitely a role model for the
young generation. How has been your
tenure?
I was privileged to be a member of
the Indian Foreign Service for 35 years.
During this period I had the honour to
serve as a diplomat in various parts of
the globe such as Russia (then USSR),
Egypt, Malaysia, the U.K., Australia, Fiji,
Senegal, Jamaica and Ukraine, the last
four as Ambassador/High Commissioner
of India.
Having worked in Commerce
Ministry at the beginning of my career
my orientation has always been to
promote India’s economic/trade ties.
During my London posting as Counsellor
(Commercial) in the early 1980s I
contributed significantly to boost our
trade ties.
In Senegal where G-15 summit was
held in the early 1990s as Ambassador
of India I worked hard to make the
visit of P.M. Shri Narasimha Rao a path
breaking one during which foundation of
our Africa’s new engagement policy was
laid. This paved the way subsequently for
India’s TEAM NINE INITIATIVE targeted
towards West African countries and
subsequently to the various Partnership
Business Conclaves eventually
culminating in the India-Africa Forum
Summits at the top level.
So the my career of 35 years as a
diplomat was indeed eventful and most
satisfying during which I worked real
hard to promote India’s interests but
also got opportunities to gain knowledge,
experience and enrich myself in many
ways.
Overseas Infrastructure Alliance is
a leading project development and
management company with presence
in India and across Africa. How did
your establishment come out?
We started with our vision to become
a premier project development and
management company, contributing to
the sustainable growth of individuals,
industries and nations. It is satisfying
that with our skill-sets leveraged from
across a broad-spectrum of advanced
Indian industries we are well on way to
achieving our mission. As a professionally
managed organisation, with high ethical
work standards, we are setting new
benchmarks of excellence with every
project we undertake. Let me clarify that
as of now our activities are concentrated
abroad.
How does Overseas Infrastructure
Alliance envision its sectorial
recognition in Africa with innovative
technologies? Give an insight on
how OIA is distinct from other
companies active in Africa and how
your strategies and plans would
truly contribute in enhancing the
present development scenario of the
continent?
OIA has a head start as it is
already engaged in more than a dozen
countries with the aim of building a
sustainable partnership centered on
capacity building, skill development and
technology dissemination. Based on our
track record in Ethiopia, Mozambique,
Republic of Congo, Sudan, Burkina
Faso, Rwanda we hope to be awarded
prestigious contracts in increasing
number of countries. It will be our
earnest endeavor to contribute to the
development scenario in the countries
concerned in a significant manner.
After knowing Africa so closely for
many years, can you share with us
some of your memorable moments
associated with it?
We are not in Africa with a
mercantilist approach like some
countries are doing merely to exploit
resources and make money. OIA’s
commitment towards the continent is
through Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR). As a unique initiative undertaken
by OIA a charitable body “OIA Health
and Welfare Endowment” was
registered in Ethiopia a few years back.
The Endowment has members from
Ethiopian Health Ministry and other
Government agencies.
In reply to your specific question
OIA’s most memorable moment has to
be when as a part of our long term CSR
commitment a state-of-the-art OIA Eye
care hospital within the campus of the
Zewditu Hospital was inaugurated by the
President of Ethiopia and dedicated it to
the nation on March 20, 2014.
What is your vision for India-Africa
at global front and how according
to you, the financial institutions can
contribute effectively and efficiently
in development and infrastructure of
the continent?
India as a fast growing economy has
striven to contribute to development of
Africa particularly in the areas of human
resource, knowledge generation and
infrastructure development.
African countries do need
infrastructure to be built fast. Apart
from ports, roads and bridges there is
an urgent need to increase the transport
capacity, including the railway network
to link it with the far flung areas where
their precious mineral and other reserves
are located.
India and Indian companies like OIA
are best placed to be partners. We are
proud to be a part of that process as a
partner.
Africa needs to advance its infrastructure to accomplish its latent to become the next engine
of global growth. The OIA is a project development, execution and management company
that has been active on the continent for 11 years. Kanchi Batra, Sub-Editor, IAT interacted
with Amb. V.B Soni, Chairman of OIA who has brought most of its trained staff from India to
the African countries providing their own skills.
Indian companies like OIA are best placed to be partners

This year scores the 51st Anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). It is a little more than a decade since the formation of the African Union, which seeks to promote “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena”. While many African countries and societies have made prodigious progress in peace and security, human rights, good governance and the rule of law, more remains to be done, several senior United Nations said during a high-level panel discussion evaluating the continent’s development. “The Africa we want is an integrated, peaceful and prosperous continent. It must be a place where employment opportunities are available for those who seek jobs, and where children go to bed with full bellies, rather than hunger pangs,” said General Assembly President Sam Kutesa at a panel discussion at UN Headquarters in New York. With a population of about 1.1 billion people, a combined GDP of over 2 trillion dollars, and impressive rates of economic growth, the continent continues to attract investment, added Mr. Kutesa, who has previously also served as Uganda’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. Wassupafrica02 Kenya Airways has reason to celebrate twice British Airways Unveils Iphone App for Travelers I t is now two months already that Kenya Airways phased out all their six B767-300ER’s which faithfully served the airline for many years, and much longer than initially anticipated, as the state of the art B787-8 Dreamliner deliveries were delayed for reasons repeatedly explained here in the past. That is now all history and the airline’s accountants in particular and the shareholders in general were no doubt happy to see the planes take off one final time from JKIA and find a new home elsewhere, replaced with newer aircraft which burn 20 percent less fuel and yet carry more passengers andmorecargooveralongerrange. Also gone are the Embraer E170’s, which were the odd birds out of a fleet of 15 Embraer E190 jets and with just 72 seats (8C/64Y) too small compared with their larger ‘siblings’ which carry 96 passengers (12C/84Y). The so called E-jets have by now become a workhorse aircraft on regional and inpartcontinentalroutes, deployed as far as the Seychelles where these ‘right sized’ planes allowed for the number of flights to be raised from Customers using HeathrowTerminal5and Terminal 3 will receive ‘push notifications’ on smart phones informing them when their gate is open and when the aircraft is boarding, so they can enjoy the airport experience to its potential. British Airways app is one of the first to take advantage of a new feature in iOS 8, the latest version of Apple’s iPhone software. Customers can now find their flight status in the iPhone notification centre, so they can stay up to date without even opening the app – as South Africa and France entering into nuclear agreement British Airways is keeping customers ‘appy’, with new features introduced to its popular iPhone app this month. South Africa and France entered into a nuclear agreement, articulated the government. The similar agreement was signed three weeks before with Russia. During the event with Russia the Minister of Energy of South Africa hinted that the deal will be followed by some more intergovernmental agreements with France, China, South Korea, United States and Japan. “This paves the way for establishing a nuclear procurement process, this agreement initiates the preparatory phase for the possible deployment of French nuclear technology in South Africa,” articulated the French Foreign Affairs Minister, Laurent Fabius in a statement. “The expansion of South Africa’s nuclear programme will yield tremendous benefit for the country without a sharp increase in green house gas emissions,” these points were articulated, asthebenefitsoftheprogrammeincluding power supply and employment of job, from the Minister which differs from that of mining and industrialization. “The president works with Cabinet on the matter,” Mac Maharaj, the spokesperson of the Presidency conveyed. Wolsey Barnard, the energy department acting general articulated that there was some misunderstanding about the authorization of the specifics in the Russian deal. He also mentioned that South Africa is seeking at different options for the enhancement of nuclear power. Zizzmele Mbambo, the deputy director general of nuclear department, said that the agreements made with six countries are not for the purpose to construct the nuclear plants but to advance the technologies which suits the South Africa’s needs best. three to four per week. It is then only a matter of time until ‘The Pride of Africa’ will be turning the options for four additional such aircraft into firm orders as the rollout of ‘Plan Mawingo’ continues, under which by 2021 the passenger fleet should reach 107 passenger jets (besides up to 12 dedicated cargo planes) which by then will be serving some 115 destinations in 70 countries across all the continents. A second brand new aircraft will join the fleet just a few days after the sixth Dreamliner has arrived, when a brand new B737- 800NG, equipped with Boeing’s acclaimed Sky Interior will be delivered. Another such B737- 800NG will be arriving a few weeks afterwards to boost the short and medium haul fleet. Eturbo News featured at Apple’s live event recently. Acting on customer feedback, iPhone customers with the British Airways app will receive a personalised welcome pop up message and WiFi password when entering the Terminal 5 lounge. British Airways is the first UK airline to use iBeacon technology in its lounges, to show notifications based on location. Drew Crawley, British Airways’ chief commercial officer, said: “We have a unique opportunity to address customer needs and offer intuitive ways of making their journey even smoother. It’s these thoughtful features – from alerting customers to gate announcements, to Wi-Fi passwords, that truly add value. “The potential to optimise mobile and digital technology is endless, but requires a careful balance of adding value without bombarding customers.” The British Airways iPhone app is currently the highest rated airline app available and has been downloaded more than four million times since launch. As well as iPhone devices, it’s available on Android, Amazon Appstore, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone models. Ghanaian Chronicle Orange Botswana partners Ericsson for enhanced efficiency and quality of service Orange Botswana has entered into a multi-year managed services agreement with Ericsson that will have the latter manage network operations for Orange Botswana. This is an effort by Orange to optimize its network and IT operations with the aim to further improve Quality of Service and customer experience. Under the terms of the contract, Ericsson will assume responsibility of the operational management and field maintenance of Orange Botswana’s network infrastructure. This agreement therefore allows Orange Botswana to leverage on Ericsson’s technical expertise and experience to maintain and further improve its network performance. This will then give Orange the edge to focus on its core business of delivering superior products and services that cater to the needs of its customers. As a result, 27 employees from Orange Botswana joined Ericsson as of the 1st September 2014 on terms similar to those enjoyed at Orange Botswana. Philippe Baudin, Chief Executive Officer, Orange Botswana, said: “This agreement with Ericsson reflects our long-standing partnership, and our ongoing commitment to deliver on a simple promise: to be first for service, value, and innovation.” Karl Johan-Nybell, Vice President, Managed Services, Ericsson sub- Saharan Africa, commented: “As Africa’s leading provider of managed services, we are committed to bringing our global expertise and experience in this field to bear on this engagement, with the aim of affording Orange’s customers quality services and superior network performance.” The agreement extends Ericsson’s managed services leadership and footprint across sub-Saharan Africa. Wassupafrica 03 FROM PAGE 01 P ayment service provider PayGate has added mobile payment system Zapper to its stable of options, says General Manager for business development Brendon Williamson, as the company gears up for a predicted mobile boom. “We expect that mobile will account for 50% of all card transactions within the next five years - and that’s probably conservative,” says Williamson. “As South Africa’s leading provider of payment services for online business, our goal is to ensure that ourclientsarealwaysabletocollect payments using the methods their customers prefer. Mobile is becoming an important part of that, with QR codes currently being The African Water Facility has announced on October 10, 2014, that it had offered the Hadejia-Jama'are- Komadugu-Yobe Basin Trust Fund a €2 million grantfor the preparation of a strategic action plan to develop water resources in the Komadugu-Yobe basin in Northern Nigeria. Over 15 million people depend on the basin and stand to benefit from this project, particularly farmers, pastoralists and fishermen. The economy of the basin is highly dependent on freshwater resources, particularly on the livelihoods generated from the wetland ecosystems, including agriculture, fishing, livestock production and related activities. Kano city and other major urban towns and rural settlements have also seen a significant increase in water demand for human consumption and other urban needs. The project is designed to help meet these water needs and address the associated challenges through an integrated water resources management approach focused on the reoperation of the Tiga and Challawa Gorge dams. Particularly, it will help enhance urban water supply, agriculture water management, aquaculture, rangeland management, as well as ecosystem services through enhanced water resources allocation, utilisation and management. “This new action plan is poised to address, in a more sustainable The high-level panel discussion heldbytheUNEconomicandSocial Council (ECOSOC) was focused on “The Africa We Want: Support of the United Nations System to the African Union’s Agenda 2063” – a development vision that is driven by Africa’s own citizens. The panel strike out what has become informally known as “AfricaWeek”(13to17October)at UN Headquarters, a series of high- level discussions and events held on the margins of the 193-member General Assembly’s annual consideration of the landmark New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), and other critical subjects concerning for the continent. Joining Mr. Kutesa were Jan Eliasson, UN Deputy-Secretary- General; Maged Abdelaziz, UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa; and several representatives of the African Union (AU), including Smail Chergui, its Commissioner forPeaceandSecurityandAnthony Mothae Maruping, Commissioner for Economic Affairs. They all indicated Africa’s development in attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and developing a shared vision for the post-2015 sustainable development agenda. In the past decade, Africa’s economies cultivated at a rate of 5.6 per cent on average, making it the world’s fastest growing region after East Asia. “To further accelerate this growth, African countries will need to modernize their agriculture, industrialize more, add value to their vast natural resources, innovate and create more employment opportunities especially for the youth,” said Mr. Kutesa. Addressing the challenge of insufficient infrastructure, The rate of return on investment is higher in Africa than in any other developing region, and foreign direct investment inflows into the continent reached over $50 billion in 2013. particularly energy, transportation and technology, remains precarious. Access to healthcare and other basic social services is still low. And vocational training and skills development training remain inadequate. Mr. Kutesa admired the constructive work of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) for its enormous latent to link and open up Africa for trade and investment. “There are huge transformative projects for which we must mobilize financing. The support of the UN System, the international community and continued partnership with the African countries remains instrumental,” said Mr. Kutesa. Addressing the ECOSOC today, Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson reiterated the UN’s commitment to work “hand in hand” with Africa on its most pressing challenges including assisting in the response to the current unprecedented Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The UN has, among other efforts, prepared its first-ever emergency health mission–the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) which is “working hard to make a different on the ground: treat the infected, preserve stability, prevent the spread of Ebola and ultimately defeat it.” The Deputy Secretary-General defined other initiatives aimed at making a difference in Africa, specifically the Every Woman Every Child initiative which has already advanced women’s and children’s health in the region. On Energy, he said that leaders are coming together to scale up access to clean energy. And the Call to Action on Sanitation is catalysing action in providing access to toilets, which 2.5 billion people currently lack. Moreover, the Africa Climate- Smart Agriculture Alliance will make certain that amplified efficiency and food security go hand-in-hand with decreased carbon emissions for nearly 25 million farming households by 2025. On a regional level, the UN will endure to support the Economic Commission for Africa which is functioning meticulously with the AU to determine capacity development needs for the application of Agenda 2063. In the zone of peace and security, Mr. Eliasson said that the UN continues to support capacity building and to develop joint policies under the several AU-UN initiatives. Here in New York, the UN continues to galvanise the support of the international community for several vulnerable countries, including Somalia, Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR). The Africa Week at the UN General Assembly Debate has simplified and celebrated the African narratives of past, present and future that would, certainly, enthuse and energise the African population to accelerate a forward looking agenda of Pan-Africanism, the African Union's Agenda 2063. The NEPAD Agency, an African Union strategic structure for pan-African socio-economic development, is both a vision and a policy agenda for Africa in the 21st century. NEPAD is a fundamentally new intervention, headed by African leaders, to address critical challenges facing the continent. The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) was recognised on 9 March 2003 by the Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee of the NEPAD Agency as a tool for self-monitoring for improved governance. PayGate adds Zapper to mobile payment optionsthe most popular way to enable payments. We offer our clients both Zapper and M a s t e r c a r d ’ s M a s t e r P a s s mobile payment options.” Zapper South Africa general manager Derek Wiggill says the company, which launched in the EU before tackling the home market of South Africa, has already signed up nearly 1000 merchants, mainly restaurants, and is growing at the rate of 50-60 new merchants a week. “For a mobile payment system to work it must add significant value to both consumers and merchants,” says Wiggill. “For the consumer, Zapper adds convenience as well as an important layer of security - your credit card cannot be cloned or skimmed in a restaurant. But merchants need something more. For them, Zapper is a way to engage more meaningfully with their customers. Every client gets a portal where they can see who their customers are, how often African Water Facility supports the development of Komadugu-Yobe Basin in Nigeria and what they are buying, and create rewards and incentives right inside the app to keep those customers coming back.” Zapper also, says Wiggill, makes it easy for merchants to cash up at the end of the day. “We are integrated directly into the point of sale software, so unlike some other mobile payment systems, Zapper payments don’t have to be processed separately. There is also no cumbersome integration needed - it’s just a matter of sending a software update.” “Mobile payments are currently an exciting fringe development,” says Wiggill. “Our goal at Zapper is to make sure they become mainstream. We’re making the transition easy for merchants by carrying the costs of setting up, providing the first three months free and giving customers a voucher for their first Zapper transaction. Its score is 1.3 points inferior to last year due to declines in trade freedom, liberty from corruption, and financial freedom. Morocco is graded 10th out of 15 countries in the Middle East/North Africa region, and its overall score is just below the world average. Over the 20-year history of the Index, Morocco’s economic freedom score has fallen by nearly 5 points, one of the 20 largest declines. Humble gains in half of the economic freedoms, including fiscal freedom, trade freedom, and financial freedom, have been overwhelmed by declines, particularly in property rights and freedom from corruption. Once ranked “moderately free,” Morocco’s economy is now rated “mostlyunfree.”Moroccohassought to assimilate its economy into the global bazaar, but general progress inthedirectionofgreatereconomic freedom has been rough. BusinessBuzz 05 Equity Bank issues mobile banking smart SIM powered by Taisys Technologies to provide mobile banking and mobile communication services Vodacom launches ‘fastest’ wireless network in Lesotho New Nissan Qashqai now on sale in Ghana Taisys Technologies Co., Ltd. has announced that Kenya’s leading bank Equity Bank will be issuing a ultra- thin mobile banking smart SIM with patented technology from Taisys. Equity Bank customers can now enjoy funds transfer, micro-payments and other mobile financial services that are agnostic across mobile devices, including traditional basic-feature phones using Taisys’s “mBanking” and “duoSIM”. The technology also allows the bank to extend to customers mobile telecommunication services approved by Communications Authority of Kenya. Traditionally, banks providing mobile banking services rely on the telecommunications provider to issue smart SIMs. Besides substantial investments from the bank in product development, the banks do not have direct control over the platform, making day-to-day maintenance difficult and creating customer experiences that are less than ideal. With Taisys’s patented ultra-thin smart SIM – duoSIM – can be directly attached the surface of an existing telco-issued SIM, and placed into the mobile device. Taisys’s duoSIM can then be used to execute mobile banking transactions, releasing the bank from the limitations of a telco- The new Nissan Qashqai is now available in Ghana for sale at the various branches of Japan Motors Trading Company Limited in the country. Vodacom Lesotho’s LTE network is the foundation for serving this growth in Lesotho, and supported by the company’s extensive 3G network, Vodacom is intent on keeping Basotho connected, and driving Lesotho’s economic development and competitiveness, in ways that are on par with the rest of the world’s growing economies,” said Mr Ferrao in a statement. The “revolutionary new offering” would be available both issued banking SIM. The unique nature of Kenya’s financial market provided the ideal environment for the rapid growth of mobile micropayment provider M-Pesa. Equity Bank is determined to challenge the M-Pesa’s monopoly in this area. By adopting duoSIM technology, Equity Bank can now provide an alternative mobile banking and mobile money solution to consumers. By successfully securing a license to be a mobile virtual network operator, Equity Bank becomes the first financial services institution in Kenya that is also licensed to provide telecommunication services. CEO of Taisys, Jason Ho expresses great optimism in Kenya’s market potential. “With a population of 40 million, and 14 million mobile money users, Kenya is a mature market with users familiar with mobile financial services. Taisys sees this as a great impetus for growth in mobile banking,” he says. He also sees Taisys’s collaboration with Kenya’s largest bank as a strategic partnership to expand the offering of mobile banking services, and providing such services to a wider population in Kenya. Balancing-act Africa T he recent launch of Long Term Evolution (LTE), or 4G, as it is commonly known, marks another huge milestone in the history of Vodacom Lesotho, the company’s Managing Director, Ian Ferrao has said. According to Mr Ferrao, the launch was another “first” for Lesotho as the telecoms giant “continues to lead the way” in delivering true value for customers and innovation for the country. LTE—which offers a new, simple, super-fast and reliable internet service to customers , both at consumer and business worldwide and was soon followed by scores of imitators. Head of Marketing and Public Relations at Japan Motors Trading Company Limited, Hilda Peasah explained:”Produced at the Nissan Sunderland plant in England, the new Qashqai arrives in Ghana with a four-model range supported by a 2.0-litre petrol engine and two trim lines. Efficient, modern, trendy and energetic in its execution, the Nissan Qashqai is not just a reworked original with a renewed lease on life. The Nissan Qashqai also offers enhanced efficiency through an extensive mass reduction p r o g r a m m e , resulting in 40kg weight loss on some models despite the extensive addition of new equipment”. NissanQashqai is available with the 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine which was seen in the first generation model as well. The power and torque was improved to 103kW (144hp) at 6000 rpm and 196Nm (20.4kg-m) at 4400 rpm with a 2.5% improvement in fuel economy. The2.0-litreengine is paired with a six-speed manual t r a n s m i s s i o n , 2WD as well as a XTRONIC CVT option in 2WD and AWD with ALL MODE 4×4-I, she stated. Furthermore, XTRONIC CVT has been specifically enhanced for the new Nissan Qashqai by defying c o n v e n t i o n a l CVT principles to create a more natural driving sensation with stepped changes to mimic conventional multi-ratio automatic gearboxes during hard acceleration. Under smoother acceleration the ratios are subtly adjusted for ultimate smoothness. Mrs. Peasah added: “Premium technology, second generation crossover design and enhanced dynamics all combine to form the backbone of the new Nissan Qashqai. The striking Nissan Qashqai is longer than the current model and fractionally lower and wider, giving it a sleek, poised stance while maintaining the crossover style, compact dimensions and raised driving position. Distinctive features – including a clamshell-style bonnet – lend a premium appearance while retaining the Nissan Qashqai’s strong visual DNA”. Inside, a dramatic rise in material and design quality adds significant interior appeal to the Nissan Qashqai package. Versatility also remains a core crossover attribute; Nissan’s engineers have devised innovative ways to make the Nissan Qashqai fit into drivers’ lives. Delivering greater occupancy space and a larger luggage capacity, Nissan Qashqai ticks all the right boxes, she stated. The first generation Nissan Qashqai’s effortless design and innovative approach was key to making it a global success. The all- new version sets a new benchmark for crossover design, featuring a striking new look with powerful curves, clean lines and intricate details, taking Nissan’s iconic crossover to the next level. Keeping everything fresh, the bold new design is fronted by the prominent Nissan V-motion grille, supported by angular headlights and an aggressive front bumper withadeepairdamforapurposeful look. Africa is a continent that has the highest returns in agriculture and food processing industry. With India’s interference, Africa can build capacity to develop sustainable and competitive local processors within food sector value chains, to improve the supply of high quality, nutritious food and to increase demand for the crops of small farmers. Without doubt, India has the capability to unlock the investment potential in Africa. Africa is now a continent that is looking for partners and not donors. It is now securely positioned as a global investment destination of choice. In 2012- 13 alone, the continent is expected to grow by 5% and it is estimated that Africa’s GDP could be US$ 2.6 trillion by 2020. While it is clear that individual countries perform economically with different levels of success, there are significant business opportunities across the continent driven by an insatiable demand for Africa’s resources. African economic growth remains largely commodity based on exports of oil, minerals and agricultural commodities with little or no processing involved. Food processing sector is poised to maintain the growth momentum in the future. It’s an exciting time to be an African working in Africa. Needless to mention that India is world’s second largest producer of food next to China, and has the potential of being the biggest with the food and agriculture sector. The food processing industry is one of the largest industries in India- it is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth. The last two decades have seen revitalization in relations between Africa and India. In the recent years, there has been a shift from conventional farming of food grains to horticulture which includes fruits, vegetables, ornamental crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices, plantation crops which include coconut, cashew nuts and cocoa and allied activities. India is now a master in the agro and food processing industry. Without doubt, India has the capability to unlock the investment potential in Africa. Many of the processing technologies used in Sub-Saharan Africa are at a small scale and use traditional or rudimentary level technology. There is a wide assortment of indigenous raw materials, some of which are in specific micronutrients. Many of the processing methods are however labour intensive, and there is potency to adapt the new methods by using modern techniques to minimizing loss in quality, increase shelf life and encourage continued Africa is looking for Partners not Donors South Africa is open for business in many sectors. Our country is also a great location for growing your business in other parts of the African continent. We also invite companies in the energy sector to explore our energy generation programme. H.E. Mr. Paul Kagame President of Rwanda H.E. Mr. Jacob Zuma President of South Africa With the firm pledge of the government, it will carry on to focus on agriculture which is considered as the main backbone to development, and as one way of affirming a rapidly growing population. This was made clear by the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources Dr. Agnes Kalibata during the 2012 Population and Housing Census result presentation that was held at the Kigali Serena Hotel. The Minister noted The different agricultural developments we have today were not there 10 years back and government has continued to develop more strategies such as land consolidation, land management, the private sector has been involved more in agriculture, tradable commodities have increased for the past 5 years, farmers continue to be sensitized on good agriculture practices and with all these more production is expected which will address food security hence cater for the growing population of the country. More health facilities have been built, children immunized, mosquito nets supplied plus the constant strengthening of the Community Health Based Insurance (CHBI), which all contribute to the wellbeing of Rwandan, hence has improved life expectancy increasing on population, Murangwa alleged. The health sector therefore saw increase in non- private health facilities from 579 in 2010 to 720 in 2011 before the last PHC was concluded. In the same report, it was yet again noted that the number of people who are educated in the country had upturn and therefore such a progress could help recover on agriculture hence mend on productivity. Other enlargements in the same report are seen in poverty reduction which now stands at a 37.8% of which one million people are below the poverty line. It is noted that 80% of the housing units in Rwanda are occupied by owners whereas 15% by tenants. The United Nation Resident Coordinator Lamin Maneh appreciated such findings which he said would give the Rwanda government a clear way of executing the set up development activities. PHC dissemination which has happened immediately after enumeration is an indication of the government commitment to have timely data for evidence-based policy making and accountability, Lamin Maneh said. Such results will therefore inform us today of who we are and where we live and therefore will allow calculations for where Rwanda stands on different indicators that measure the progress in health, education, plus other social and economic sectors, he added. Agriculture is the backbone of Rwanda Agriculture remains a crucial cornerstone to Africa’s economic transformation, and there are many examples where it has been pivotal to the realized growth, including among others in Ethiopia, Uganda, Ghana, and my own country, Rwanda. With India’s interference, Africa can build capacity to develop sustainable and competitive local processors within food sector value chains. consumption. With India’s interference, Africa can build capacity to develop sustainable and competitive local processors within food sector value chains, to improve the supply of high quality, nutritious food and to increase demand for the crops of small farmers. India’s economic growth is easing a new phase of south- south engagement, especially with regard to its long standing relationship with its ‘near neighbours’ in Africa. The reinvigoration of the Africa-India relationship has the potential to create a new platform for south- south dialogue and a mutually beneficial partnership that can enhance developmental prospects in both Africa India. The availability of natural resources, vast unutilized arable land, best agroclimatic conditions and efforts by the Government of Africa to lease fertile land to foreign companies, presence of a vibrant and fast-growing financial sector besides availability of affordable manpower are some of the key factors that help sustain and strengthen the India-Africa trade relations in agriculture and food processing, according to an expert. Africa is wooing agriculture and food processing majors to partner and support agriculture related activities. The continent is a promising investment hub for many Indian food and agriculture companies. If agricultural experts from India can provide the required support to grow and sustain sowing and harvesting activities, it will definitely support feeding many hungry mouths, given the fertile land access in Africa. With this, Indian companies can infuse the right technology and can generate local employment also. There is a significant presence of Indian agricultural firms and food processing companies in Africa. These include Tata Group, Karuturi Global, Shapoorji Pallonji Co, BHO Bio, Jaipurias of RJ Corp, Whitefield Cotton Farm, Verdanata Harvests, S P Energy Solutions, Sannati Agro Farm Enterprises and Ruchi Soya. The Government of India too is playing the role of a channel in assisting its food and agriculture companies increase their attendance in Africa. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries is planning to set up a food processing cluster in Africa. The proposed cluster would entail an investment of Rs 117 crore to be spent primarily on the setting up of common infrastructure for food processing parks which includes cold storage, food testing labs, incubation centres, standard designed factories, pre-cooling chambers and other modern technologies used by the industry. The tax concessions and leased land concept have seen companies here opt for an African trail even if they are remotely associated with agriculture and food processing. For instance, infrastructure major Shapoorji Pallonji Co received 50,000 leased hectares in Ethiopia and is likely to consider its foray into agriculture in the coming years. There is also considerable interest evinced for the tea gardens in Africa which are known to have some of the best black teas in the world. The regions of Malawi, Kenya and Tanzania are home to the best tea estates, according to a food exporter. To sum up, the African continent has great potency for food production. Private- Public Partnership is requisite to improve food processing in Africa. Private enterprises and entrepreneurs are rapidly exploiting new business opportunities in domestic food markets, as seen in many African countries. MONDAY | OCTOBER 20, 2014

Kipchoge, a two-time Olympic 5,000m-medalist competing for only his fourth time at the 26.2- mile distance, won in two hours, four minutes and 11 seconds to defeat his countryman Sammy Kitwara by 17 seconds. Dickson Chumba was third in 2:04:32, completing the eighth Kenyan podium sweep in the past 14 events and second in a row. Jeptoo, 33, defended her title in 2:24:35 and collected her fourth marathon triumph in a row since settling for second at Chicago in 2012 behind Atsede Baysa, having swept the Boston and Chicago crowns this year and last. I'm the queen of Chicago, Jeptoo said. Ethiopia's Mare Dibaba, a 2012 Olympian and the third-place finisher in Boston, was second, more than a minute off the pace, with Kenya's Florence Kiplagat third in 2:25:57. Windy conditions greeted runners from more than 100 nations in the 37th edition of the event. Kipchoge, 29, took $155,000 in prize money and bragging rights over long-time Ethiopian track rival Kenenisa Bekele, the three- time Olympic champion and 5,000 and 10,000 world record holder who finished fifth in 2:05:51 in only his second marathon start. Kipchoge, who took 5,000-meter silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and bronze four years earlier at Athens and captured a 2003 world title at the distance, won his marathon debut last year at Hamburg. The Kenyan podium trio pulled away from the lead pack after 20 miles and Kipchoge left his countrymen behind in the penultimate mile. Kipchoge was six seconds off his personal best, set last year at Berlin, but had the third-fastest winning time in race history. Kipchoge finished 26 seconds off the course record set last year by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto, who did not try to defend his crown but instead won last month's Berlin Marathon in a world record time of 2:02:57. Kenya's Bernard Koech, runner-up to Kipchoge in Rotterdam this year, was fifth in 2:08:30. Jeptoo, coming off a course- record run of 2:18:57 in Boston, was wll off her 2013 Chicago winning time of 2:19:57. Kiplagat, the world half- marathon record holder, and Dibaba battled Jeptoo into the 23rd mile before the defending champion began pulling away. American Joshua George won his fourth men's wheelchair title in 1:32:12 while Russian-born American Tatyana McFadden won her fifth women's wheelchair crown, and fourth in a row, in 1:44:50. • 12. ENCOUNTER WITH EDITOR12 Owner / Publisher / Editor: Mr. Kirit Sobti from 3rd Floor, Plot No. 3, Block PSP-IV, Service Centre Opp. Sector-11 (Extn.), Rohini, Delhi-85 Printed at LIPEE SCAN PVT. LTD. 89 DSIDC SHED Okhala Phase 1, New Delhi Ambassador Soni, you have a distinguished career, a former Indian Diplomat, an industrialist and definitely a role model for the young generation. How has been your tenure? I was privileged to be a member of the Indian Foreign Service for 35 years. During this period I had the honour to serve as a diplomat in various parts of the globe such as Russia (then USSR), Egypt, Malaysia, the U.K., Australia, Fiji, Senegal, Jamaica and Ukraine, the last four as Ambassador/High Commissioner of India. Having worked in Commerce Ministry at the beginning of my career my orientation has always been to promote India’s economic/trade ties. During my London posting as Counsellor (Commercial) in the early 1980s I contributed significantly to boost our trade ties. In Senegal where G-15 summit was held in the early 1990s as Ambassador of India I worked hard to make the visit of P.M. Shri Narasimha Rao a path breaking one during which foundation of our Africa’s new engagement policy was laid. This paved the way subsequently for India’s TEAM NINE INITIATIVE targeted towards West African countries and subsequently to the various Partnership Business Conclaves eventually culminating in the India-Africa Forum Summits at the top level. So the my career of 35 years as a diplomat was indeed eventful and most satisfying during which I worked real hard to promote India’s interests but also got opportunities to gain knowledge, experience and enrich myself in many ways. Overseas Infrastructure Alliance is a leading project development and management company with presence in India and across Africa. How did your establishment come out? We started with our vision to become a premier project development and management company, contributing to the sustainable growth of individuals, industries and nations. It is satisfying that with our skill-sets leveraged from across a broad-spectrum of advanced Indian industries we are well on way to achieving our mission. As a professionally managed organisation, with high ethical work standards, we are setting new benchmarks of excellence with every project we undertake. Let me clarify that as of now our activities are concentrated abroad. How does Overseas Infrastructure Alliance envision its sectorial recognition in Africa with innovative technologies? Give an insight on how OIA is distinct from other companies active in Africa and how your strategies and plans would truly contribute in enhancing the present development scenario of the continent? OIA has a head start as it is already engaged in more than a dozen countries with the aim of building a sustainable partnership centered on capacity building, skill development and technology dissemination. Based on our track record in Ethiopia, Mozambique, Republic of Congo, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Rwanda we hope to be awarded prestigious contracts in increasing number of countries. It will be our earnest endeavor to contribute to the development scenario in the countries concerned in a significant manner. After knowing Africa so closely for many years, can you share with us some of your memorable moments associated with it? We are not in Africa with a mercantilist approach like some countries are doing merely to exploit resources and make money. OIA’s commitment towards the continent is through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). As a unique initiative undertaken by OIA a charitable body “OIA Health and Welfare Endowment” was registered in Ethiopia a few years back. The Endowment has members from Ethiopian Health Ministry and other Government agencies. In reply to your specific question OIA’s most memorable moment has to be when as a part of our long term CSR commitment a state-of-the-art OIA Eye care hospital within the campus of the Zewditu Hospital was inaugurated by the President of Ethiopia and dedicated it to the nation on March 20, 2014. What is your vision for India-Africa at global front and how according to you, the financial institutions can contribute effectively and efficiently in development and infrastructure of the continent? India as a fast growing economy has striven to contribute to development of Africa particularly in the areas of human resource, knowledge generation and infrastructure development. African countries do need infrastructure to be built fast. Apart from ports, roads and bridges there is an urgent need to increase the transport capacity, including the railway network to link it with the far flung areas where their precious mineral and other reserves are located. India and Indian companies like OIA are best placed to be partners. We are proud to be a part of that process as a partner. Africa needs to advance its infrastructure to accomplish its latent to become the next engine of global growth. The OIA is a project development, execution and management company that has been active on the continent for 11 years. Kanchi Batra, Sub-Editor, IAT interacted with Amb. V.B Soni, Chairman of OIA who has brought most of its trained staff from India to the African countries providing their own skills.
