HIV/AIDS in the United States: Epidemiology and an Overview of High-Impact Prevention Measures
By Melody Lehosit, Kaplan University School of Health Sciences
A presentation for National Public Health Week.
This document summarizes a presentation about myths and facts that serodiscordant couples in Malawi have about HIV/AIDS. It defines key terms like serodiscordant couples and outlines the HIV problem in Malawi. It then describes a study that interviewed serodiscordant couples to understand their experiences with HIV/AIDS information. The study found challenges couples face in accessing reliable information. It identifies 6 common myths couples believe, such as that mosquitoes or shaking hands can transmit HIV. The myths increase stigma and discourage condom use or treatment adherence.

This document provides information about suicide rates, depression rates, and the organization Aasra. Some key points:
- Suicide is the second leading cause of death in India, with about 100,000 deaths by suicide annually. Depression among youth has increased from 2% to 12% in the last five years.
- Aasra is a crisis intervention center that provides a 24/7 helpline, counseling, and support groups for people who are depressed, suicidal, or terminally ill. Over the past 10 years, Aasra has supported over 300,000 callers.
- Aasra aims to alleviate human suffering by providing confidential listening and support. They target at-risk groups like youth
The ALICE project studied alcohol use, mental health, and health service usage among lesbian, bisexual, and queer women in Australia. An online survey of 521 women found high rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and discrimination. Discrimination was linked to worse mental health and higher alcohol use. While most women saw doctors regularly, few did so for alcohol or mental health, and many were reluctant due to concerns about confidentiality, judgment and discrimination. The study aims to understand these issues better through interviews and develop training to improve healthcare provider competency.

This document summarizes research on the experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people accessing health services in North West Ireland. It finds that deciding whether to disclose their sexual orientation to providers is a major concern, with both positive and negative outcomes reported. Recognition of same-sex partnerships and parenthood are also issues. Mental health is identified as central, though experiences accessing services varied. Sexual and reproductive health services are seen as important but lacking appropriate knowledge and confidentiality. Suggestions focus on organizational policies of inclusion, provider training, and ensuring private spaces for consultations. Overall, the research illuminates barriers LGB people face and how creating supportive environments could improve health care experiences and outcomes.
The document discusses several topics related to HIV/AIDS in Taiwan:
1) It provides an overview of the HIV/AIDS situation in Taiwan, including statistics on reported cases and conditions.
2) It describes services provided by two Taiwanese organizations - the Tongzhi Hotline Association, which focuses on LGBT rights, education and support, and the Persons with HIV/AIDS Rights Association of Taiwan (PRAATW), which advocates for the rights of those living with HIV/AIDS.
3) The Tongzhi Hotline Association offers a variety of programs including a hotline, education, family support, meetings and HIV/AIDS prevention activities. PRAATW conducts surveys and advocates on issues
This study investigated the fertility intentions of HIV positive women in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It found that most HIV positive women do not want more children due to concerns about their health and the risk of transmitting HIV to their children. However, some healthcare providers felt that healthy HIV positive women should be able to have children. The study recommends integrating reproductive health services into HIV care and developing policies to address the reproductive desires of HIV positive women.
This document discusses stigma, discrimination, disclosure, and legal issues related to HIV. It begins by defining stigma and its impacts. It then discusses the roots of HIV stigma, including fear of contagion and negative assumptions about those infected. Multiple stigmas can compound issues for those living with HIV. Legal duties around disclosure are complex, with unclear guidelines around what constitutes significant risk of transmission. Non-disclosure can result in criminal charges but disclosure may not fully protect against prosecution. Community organizations have duties around confidentiality but not mandatory reporting.
1) Formative research was conducted in Australia to understand HIV-related stigma and discrimination experienced by gay men to inform a national campaign. 2) Discussions with HIV-negative and positive gay men found stigma has increased, especially in relationships, as gay communities have become more integrated and online dating has grown. 3) Attitudes towards sex with HIV positive partners varied, from never to being comfortable if the relationship was open about status. Reducing stigma will require addressing ignorance and experiences within the community.
This document discusses elder abuse and efforts to raise awareness of the issue. It provides definitions of elder abuse and outlines the types of abuse. It also notes that the aging population is increasing, and with it, cases of elder abuse. Statistics about elder abuse in Nepal are presented, showing the number of older people who died or were injured due to physical abuse by year and sex. The document concludes by showing the district-wise distribution of physical abuse incidents in Nepal between 2012 and 2014.
Free HIV/STD testing removes financial barriers, ensuring accessibility for all individuals regardless of their socioeconomic status. Confidentiality and privacy are upheld throughout the testing process, promoting a safe and supportive environment. Moreover, free testing initiatives encourage more people to get tested, leading to early diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately, the reduction of infection rates within the community.

This document discusses social determinants of health as they relate to HIV risk and outcomes. It covers topics like stigma, myths, prevalence, transmission, prevention, and treatment of HIV. It also discusses the links between sexual violence and increased HIV risk. Key points include:
- Social factors like income, education, housing, and stigma influence HIV risk.
- Stigma of HIV can lead to worse health outcomes due to isolation, stress, and lack of care.
- Violence limits individuals' ability to negotiate safer sex or end risky relationships, increasing HIV risk.
- Collaboration is needed between HIV and violence support services to address the intersection of these issues.

Oluwayemisi Ishola: Contraceptive Use Autonomy, Decision and Dependence Level...GetItTogetherNG
This study aimed to assess contraceptive use autonomy, decision-making, and dependence levels among young women in Nigeria. The cross-sectional survey included 5436 female adolescents and youth aged 15-24 across 4 Nigerian states. Results showed that while most women make contraceptive decisions jointly with their partners, a considerable number rely on others to convince or make decisions for them. There was a strong association between who makes contraceptive decisions and autonomy levels. The study concludes that integrating contraceptive negotiation and assertiveness into family planning programs could help empower more women to make their own informed choices. Implementers should meaningfully engage young people to design effective youth-focused interventions.
LGBT Discrimintion in Health Care by Melissa MunozMelissa Munoz
This document provides a proposal for implementing mandatory cultural competence training for healthcare professionals focused on working with the LGBT community. The problem is that LGBT individuals often face discrimination in healthcare settings, resulting in avoidance of care. The proposed solution is a 3-month training program where staff will be required to attend sessions conducted by an LGBT advocacy organization. Data will be collected through pre-and post-tests to measure changes in attitudes, and observational data of the sessions. The goal is to increase LGBT cultural competence, reduce perceived discrimination, and increase LGBT individuals seeking healthcare.
PPT for Oral Presentation at International Leprosy Congress (ILC), Manila 201...suchitralisam
Its a presentation (oral) at the ILC 2019, Manila about role of perceptions and knowledge on leprosy in elimination of leprosy in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh
This presentation provides an overview of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in Ghana. The objectives are to understand the forms of stigma, appreciate its impact, and find ways to end it. HIV prevalence in Ghana is consistently over 1% and it is a generalized epidemic. Stigma negatively impacts PLHIV's quality of life and ability to access healthcare. It takes many forms including self-stigma, governmental stigma through discriminatory policies, healthcare stigma like denial of care, and stigma in employment and communities through social isolation and rejection. Ending stigma is critical to effectively respond to the HIV epidemic in Ghana.
This document summarizes a presentation given to youth leaders on HIV risks and vulnerabilities. It discusses definitions of key terms, facts about HIV and AIDS, how HIV is transmitted, risks faced by out-of-school youth, impacts of HIV/AIDS, epidemiology of HIV in the Philippines, and examples of interventions youth can support like peer education and promoting condom use. The overall goal is to inform youth leaders so they can help prevent the spread of HIV in their communities.
This study examined the influence of gender roles on adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among people living with HIV in Belgrade, Serbia. A survey of 68 men and 23 women found that the most common reasons for skipping doses were fear of stigma if their HIV status or sexual practices became known. Gender roles and fear of gender-based violence appeared to negatively impact ART adherence by promoting secrecy. The researchers recommend training healthcare workers and HIV service providers on gender issues to help overcome barriers to adherence related to perceptions of gender and stigma.
- Child and adolescent marriage is common in many developing countries, with over 30% of girls married by age 18.
- Married adolescent girls have little power to negotiate safe sex and are often in unions with much older husbands, increasing their risk of HIV.
- Data from 29 countries show that the majority (over 80% in most) of sexually active adolescent girls who had unprotected sex recently were married.
- HIV prevalence tends to be higher among married adolescent girls than sexually active unmarried adolescents in some settings, highlighting marriage is not always protective against HIV risk for adolescent girls.

5. Findings: 1. HIV-related stigma creates an
environment for punitive laws
• Misinformation in the general
population fuels stigma and fear
• Legal systems are not well-
versed in HIV
• Media often exacerbates stigma;
reports often violate privacy and
impartiality
• Insensitive or unprofessional
treatment by health care
providers discourages access
6. Findings: 2. Punitive laws and polices undermine
HIV responses
• Many not accessing HIV-related services due to fear and stigma,
especially respondents whose behavior has been criminalized
• Repressive laws toward women and girls limit access to HIV services
• Criminalization of HIV non-disclosure, perceived exposure or
transmission discourages testing
• Criminalization of sex work increases vulnerability to violence and
inhibits access to health care
• Criminalization of drug use and the lack of availability of harm reduction
methods is impacting ability to access HIV-related services
• Undocumented workers and immigrants are afraid to seek health care
7. Findings: 3. Legal protections are insufficient;
experience of law enforcement is negative
• Anti-discrimination laws are
being undermined by HIV-
related stigma
• Workplace discrimination
and mandatory testing
continue
• Experiences with law
enforcement were negative
• Incarceration can lead to
treatment disruption and
inhumane conditions
8. Findings: 4. Individuals do not know their rights
• Legal aid is important and helpful but not widely
available. Legal information not always clear, leaving
service providers unclear as to how to interpret laws to
their clients.
• Cooperation between AIDS service organizations and
legal aid needs to be increased.
9. II. Focus on North America:
Consultation respondents
11. North America: Key findings
Need to increase the availability of: insurance
coverage, housing and mental health services
Legal aid services have helped and need to be more
widepsread
Lack of protective laws specific to immigrants, MSM,
transgender persons, sex workers and people who
use drugs is limiting access to HIV-related services
12. Recommendations
1. Support anti-stigma and HIV education campaigns to
increase and enforce protective laws.
2. Oppose and repeal laws that criminalize HIV non-
disclosure, exposure or transmission, homosexuality,
gender identity/expression, abortion, sex work and drug
use.
3. Foster protective laws and knowledge of protective laws
and human rights within the justice system.
4. Support and promote programs to know your rights/laws
and access justice.
13. Reaction to the report
Difficulty in discussing key issues and bringing
recommendations to the UNAIDS board
Not all governments willing or able to recognize
human rights issues or key populations
Inability to hold substantive discussions on follow up
or gain state commitments
Is this a board level issue?
14. III. Next steps
Advocacy by and with communities at global and
national levels based on these and other findings;
avoiding tokenistic representation
Continued work at country levels to address stigma
and discrimination, especially with government
leaders
More quantitative prevention research on how HIV
