Vocabulary Notebooks English I
Vocabulary Notebooks… Must be in a composition notebook: At least 100 sheets (200 pages) Bound on the Left-hand side Can be wide-ruled or college-ruled as long as there are at least 100 pages! Can be any color. Notebooks (mostly) will stay in Mrs. White’s room.
Vocabulary Notebook Setup: Yes, I know I’m picky about this. Trust me… taking a little bit of time to set this up now will make your life MUCH easier later. Skip the first page. When you’re filling out the page numbers, think of each page as its own. (note: the chart = 99 pages.) A = 6 H = 4 O = 4 V = 3 B = 4 I = 4 P = 4 W = 4 C = 5 J = 2 Q = 1 X = 1 D = 4 K = 2 R = 6 Y = 3 E = 5 L = 5 S = 6 Z = 1 F = 4 M = 4 T = 6 G = 4 N = 5 U = 2
Setup Continued Do everything in pencil first, then if you want you can go over it in ink, marker, etc. Go though and mark each page with a letter (on just the front facing page is fine.) For example, for the year you will have six pages to write all of your vocab words that start with ‘A’, four pages for ‘B’, etc. Go though and number ALL of the pages. Remember, page #1 is blank. 
Time will be given in class to complete this assignment. Your first quiz grade will consist of whether or not you have a composition notebook, have the appropriate pages numbered, and have letters on the correct pages.
Classroom Procedure You should be in your seat with your vocab notebook by the TARDY bell. I will put up the bellringer words as soon as the tardy bell rings. You have 5 minutes to finish the assignment You will have roughly 5 words a week, with a quiz on Friday and a vocabulary test on the alternating Friday.
I grade the vocabulary notebooks once every 4 weeks. They are usually a Pass/Fail- but worth between 100 and 200 points a pop! 
Copy the following on the first page of the comp book: Each word must have: the definition. the classroom example w/ context clues indicated. an original sentence w/ context clues indicated.
Example Sparse: (adj) thinly scattered. From the hundreds of skyscrapers , I can tell that open land is sparse around here. Although the hair on my uncle’s head is pretty sparse , the comb-ove r is hilarious. You get no credit for any word that is missing any of these parts.
