This document discusses preparing applications for access via mobile devices. It notes that mobile data traffic is doubling every year, presenting new challenges for application performance. Key points include using virtual users to simulate mobile devices and networks during testing, defining service level objectives by location, and analyzing results to identify bottlenecks like high network round trips or excessive data transfer. The document recommends applying Application Performance Engineering practices and using HP LoadRunner and Shunra tools to ensure applications can meet performance needs over mobile networks.

Apps, APIs & Analytics: What "Mobile First" Really MeansAxway Appcelerator
BYOD for tablets and smartphones represents only the first shock of the mobile explosion. There is an even larger change coming, one defined by greater (not less) heterogeneity in device and OS, combined with myriad of new data sources. Driving all of it is a demand for ever-richer user experiences - a new kind of "experience economy", where the winners are those companies that deliver the most compelling experiences to the user's device of choice. In this presentation to the Washington Area CTO Roundtable, Appcelerator co-founder and CTO Nolan Wright investigates what these changes mean to the ways we build apps, connect them to public and enterprise data, and measure the results - as well as what it all suggests for the future of enterprise IT.

[TTT Meetup] Enhance mobile app testing with performance-centric strategies (...NITHIN S.S
In mobile app spaces, with all these evolving technologies and competitors, 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 plays an important role in terms of delivering a seamless end-user experience. Improving performance has become the top priority for all global mobile app companies as it directly impacts user experience, retention rates, conversions, and ultimately revenue. Even if we deliver a brilliant feature with performance issues, people will eventually stop using those apps. As high-performing apps are user favourites, we testers should also adopt performance-centric strategies while testing mobile apps.
In this talk, you will learn about:
Basic types of mobile apps.
An overview of important performance metrics to consider.
Basics and importance of mobile app performance testing with trends and parameters.
Factors to consider while evaluating an app’s performance & ideas to prepare a performance-oriented testing strategy.
Best practices and tools to consider for providing valuable insights to stakeholders.
Quick glance at the rise of 5G and its impact in the mobile app space.
Cloud-Based, Automated Mobile App Testing for the EnterpriseTechWell
Mobile applications are now a required component of enterprise operations, with both consumers and workers relying on mobile technologies for communications and productivity. To ensure a functional, secure, and worthwhile mobile experience, enterprises must stay abreast of growing complexity in mobile devices, applications, and platforms while remaining responsive to unforgiving user expectations for speed and service. To meet this challenge, many firms are turning to cloud-based automated testing, which reduces the complexity and cost of manual, on-premise testing and offers extraordinary flexibility to accommodate a variety of scenarios. Joe Schulz outlines the reasons why cloud-based application testing is beneficial, discusses the role it plays in supporting testing automation, and explores the best practices for adopting this solution. Get a practical grounding in cloud-based automated mobile testing. Learn how this approach helps companies speed time to market, optimize security and performance, increase user satisfaction, and contain costs.

The burgeoning use of mobile devices has created enormous opportunities for organizations to leverage mobile to increase sales, advertise products, and collaborate with internal and external resources. However, with increasing usage, the need to perform testing on these devices is increasing significantly. This is not an easy task considering the number of devices, device operating systems, and operating system versions. To manage the number of variations, organizations rely on mobile testing tools to support their testing efforts. David Dang shares his experiences analyzing numerous mobile testing tool platforms for a prominent shopping network. Learn how identifying the "right" mobile testing tool depends on multiple factors such as supported devices, level of testing, resources, and required integration with other tools. Take back to share with your team a review of common tools on the market and the pros and cons of each.
My key note speech at Droidcon 2012 promoting DT's leadership in the Smartphone Challenge initiative.
Smartphones have catapulted the distribution of mobile apps to new highs with increased usage of mobile networks.
The Smartphone challenge project goal is to optimise the interaction between devices & networks
DT understand the threat from network intensive, badly designed applications and developed developer guidelines.
DT alone cannot influence the market and we decided to leverage the support of GSMA, industry affiliates and developers themselves.

8. The big question How will your application run in standard browsers over a 3G connection? (iPad, Kindle, Laptop + data card)
14. Preparing for the Mobile Load Mobile Virtual User Options: Use a GUI Virtual User Automating a mobile device emulator Automating a tethered mobile device Use a Transport-level Virtual User Recorded from tethered mobile device Recorded from portmapped traffic Recorded from Emulator (recommended)
15. Preparing for the Mobile Load GUI Virtual Users are most accurate Capture the full end-to-end experience of the emulated device or the actual device if you have it. Scripting difficulty is low-to-medium, leveraging QuickTest Professional. Limited quantity – GUI Vusers are limited to 1 host each. Good choice when augmenting an existing test scenario with mobile clients.
16. Preparing for the Mobile Load Feeling adventurous? Try Portmapped Recording Must have a shared private network for the VUGen machine, the mobile device and the target server. Security and firewalls must be temporarily disabled during recording. Configure the Recording Options in the VUGen (default is ‘All’ traffic) for Socket level data. Access to mobile device operating system via terminal/ssh is recommended for troubleshooting.
17. Preparing for the Mobile Load Controller Configuration: Create groups for emulated types Groups for each type of device and location Each vuser should iterate multiple samples Configure schedule for real-world ramp-up Configure SLOs and monitors Response time is critical – set SLO’s WAN throughput is also critical Measure CPU of the Device or Emulator
18. Preparing for the Mobile Load Results Analysis and Reporting: Remember Mobile is the context Results should reflect end-user impacts Response times impact productivity Know the ‘real world’ -> (Gaps? Dropouts?) Look for key bottlenecks High network round-trips (# of calls) Excessive data transfer to/from the device Excessive device CPU and slow I/O WAN is the weakness of all Web 2.0 apps
