When we started at the South Sioux City Public Library two years ago the library was having difficult times. Circulation and attendance numbers were down. The public’s opinion of the library was not positive. In two years’ time period we have seen an increase of circulation from 21000 items to over 40000 items. We have seen attendance numbers for youth climb from 2000 to 6000 and adult attendance has gone from 800 participants to over 3000 participants. This presentation will tell what we did to turn the program around. Presenters: David Mixdorf, Dan Nieman, Odessa Meyer, South Sioux City Public Library.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Las fotos transmiten mi forma de ver la vida, lo que
representa la música para mi, la importancia que le doy a
la felicidad, esas pequeñas cosas que no todos pueden ver
y a mi me encanta descubrir a diario. Todas las fotos son
simbólicas, la guitarra representa la música; el cielo es la
luz que me alumbra cada día y me ayuda a ser mejor
persona; el mar, es la ambigüedad que me representa, la
calma y la tormenta por momentos.
68. Anna
The photos convey my way of life, what music
represents for me, the importance I give to happiness,
those little things that not everyone can see and I love
discovering every day. All pictures are symbolic, the
guitar represents music, the sky is the light that shines
on me every day and helps me be a better person, the
sea is the ambiguity that represents me, the calm and
the storm at times.

70. Danielle on Anna
The first image Anna sent me showed me how much she
loves music, and definitely showed me how she was a
carefree, girly, and independent she is. The...photo...of the
sun shining through the clouds...represents the good times
through the bad and having fun. The next picture of the girl
in the water is my favorite because it’s so happy and
easygoing. Her next photo really interested me because I
feel it represents...a homey, relaxing place that also makes
us feel so small and insignificant. Her last picture also
reminded me in symbolism of my last picture, of loneliness
and fear of it and change.
72. Danielle
The balloons represent stressful problems... the only two ways of dealing with them
are letting them go or letting them explode. In my case, letting them go is the
better, less stressful choice. Following this photo, is another self portrait [that]
shows my carefree side, which comes up again later. The next photo, of the moon is
one that represents how I am ever-changing, and have many different sides. The
photograph of the balloon flying away is a lot like my first image, with the balloon
representing letting go [and being] carefree. My next photo is of a water bowl
sitting out on the steps in the rain. I think this one is symbolic in the way that it
represents the sense being left, or alone which is one of my greatest fears. The next
photo is of a sunset where we go camping every year as a family tradition. The
ocean...makes me feel so small, yet it can also be very refreshing, relaxing, and make
me feel whole-two very different feelings. My last photo is of my favorite suitcase
left out on our porch. Whenever I see it, I think of isolation, once again, something I
fear. I think that although many people from my country may not attest this, I feel
that many of us are surrounded by people but we feel very alone, and do not admit
to it because of the fear that it is true.

74. Anna on Danielle
75. Anna on Danielle
I think Danielle’s pictures show me her personality, the
importance of music in his life, which I note on the picture
of a mirror with musical notes. Danielle’s pictures also
seem symbolic, the photo of the moon is a way to express
her vision of life, that despite the darkness there will
always be a light to guide her. I was impressed by the
beauty of the landscape with rocks, [this] is a nice place
and the message of that picture is very optimistic; this
sunrise or sunset tells me that after one day comes
another, that do not leave for tomorrow what I can do
today.
