1.2 Check Installation Environment
VISTA 1600C OLT must be used indoor. Whether you install the VISTA 1600C OLT in
the cabinet or on the working platform, the requirements must be as following:
Make sure there is the enough space in the tuyere for the heat dissipation of the OLT.
Make sure the cabinet and the working platform have the heat dissipation system
themselves.
Make sure the cabinet and the working platform are firm enough to hold the OLT and
its accessories.
Make sure the cabinet and the working platform are earthed.
1.3 Environmental Requirements
To ensure that EPON equipment has the normally running and life-span, the
equipment room must keep the temperature and humidity. If the humidity in the room is
high chronically, insulation materials will be not well-insulated or even creepage.
Sometimes the mechanic function of the materials may be changed or the metallic
components may rust. If the relative humidity is low, fastening screw may get loose
because the insulation piece will be dry shrinking. In the dry environment, it will take the
static to jeopardize the circuit in the EPON equipment. The high temperature will cause
more dangers. The long-term high temperature will cause insulation materials to age much
more quickly. The environmental requirements of the equipment room are as table 1-1:
Table 1-1 Environmental requirements of the equipment room

Item (long-term working (short-term working
condition) condition)
Temperature -5℃~+45℃ -25℃~+55℃

1.3.1 Cleanness Requirements
Dust is a danger for safe-running of the EPON equipment. When dust falls on the
equipment, is will take the static, which will lead to the poor contact of metallic connector
or metallic junction. Especially when the indoor humidity is relatively low, the static is
easier to be taken. It will not only affect the life-span of the equipment, but also will cause
the malfunction of the communication. The requirements for dust contents and the
diameter of the dust in the equipment room are shown in table 1-2.
Table 1-2 Requirements for dust contents in the equipment room
Mechanic active
Contents
substance
Suspended dust ≤5.00mg/m³
Perceptible dust ≤20.0mg/m²·h
Gravel ≤300mg/m³
Note
Suspended dust: diameter of the dust is no more than 75μm.
Perceptible dust: diameter of the dust is no less than 75μm and no more than
150μm.
Gravel: diameter of the dust is no less than 150μm and no more than 1000 μm.
Besides the dust, requirements for the salt, acid, sulfide in the equipment room are
demanding. These noxious gases will fasten the erosion of the metal and the aging of
some components. Invasion of noxious gases such as SO2、H2S、NH3、Cl2 should be
prevented. The limits for these gases contents will be seen in table 1-3:
Table 1-3 Noxious gas limit in the equipment room
Chemically reactive substance Contents
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) ≤0.30mg/m³
Sulfureted hydrogen (H2S) ≤0.10mg/m³
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) ≤0.50mg/m³
Ammonia (NH3) ≤1.00mg/m³
Chlorine (Cl2) ≤0.10mg/m³
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) ≤0.10mg/m³
Hydrofluoric acid (HF) ≤0.01mg/m³
Ozone (O3) ≤0.05mg/m³

capacitance coupling, inductance coupling, electromagnetic radiation, common impedance
coupling (including grounding system) and transmission modes of the cables(etc. power
cable ,signal cable and output cable). So the following must be paid attention to:
AC power system is the TN system. AC power socket must be the single-phase
three-cable power socket with protection earthing(PE), to make sure the filtering
circuit will filter the disturbance of the electric network very well.
Work location of OLT equipment should be far from super power radio-transmitting
station, radar-transmitting station and high-frequency high-current equipment.
Electromagnetic shielding should be adopted if necessary. For example, interface
cable must be electromagnetic shielding cable.
Interface cables must be routing indoor. Outdoor routing is forbidden. This is to avoid
that the overvoltage and overcurrent of lighting will damage the signal interface of the
equipment.
1.3.3 Safety for using laser
VISTA 1600 series EPON equipment belongs to Type-1 laser equipment. If the light
board of the VISTA 1600 series EPON equipment is still running, please don’t see these
light interfaces directly. The light bundles from the optical fibers contain high energy, so
they may harm the retina.

1.5 Safety attentions
Before cleaning the VISTA 1600C OLT, you must get out the VISTA 1600C power plug.
Don’t clean the OLT with wet cloth. Don’t clean the OLT with liquid.
Don’t put the OLT near water or in wet place to prevent water or humid gas to get into
the OLT.
Don’t put the OLT on an unstable box or table. Or else it falls, the OLT will get
damaged seriously.
Make sure the ventilation condition for the OLT and the equipment room is fine.
The OLT can work only with the right voltage. So make sure the running voltage is the
same as the voltage signed on the OLT.
To reduce the danger of electricity strike, don’t open the shell when the OLT is running.
Even when the equipment is power-off, don’t open the shell arbitrarily.

2.3.3 Optical fiber installation
Optical fiber connector introduction
When you choose the optical fiber, make sure the type of the chosen optical fiber
connector is the same as the type of the optical interface. Optical fiber connector is the
indispensable passive device in optical fiber communication system. Its usage will make
possible dismountable connection in optical channels. This will facilitate the debugging and
maintenance of the optical system, and make the linking more flexible. There are many
types of the optical fiber connector. We only introduce SC type and LC type.

Step 2: Take off the protective cap of the VISTA 1600C optical interface. Then put one
side of
the optical fiber into the optical interface.
Step 3: Connect the other side of the optical fiber with the other side equipment.
2.4 Splitter installation
2.4.1 Introduction of splitter
In the optical access network of the EPON system, ODN (Optical Distribution Network)
exists between OLT equipment and the ONU equipment of the customer side. ODN
consists of trunk optical fiber, splitter and branch optical fiber.
Splitter is the indispensable component in the EPON system. As the passive device
which connects OLT and ONU, it transmits the input optical signal from the trunk optical
fiber to the branch optical fiber according to power ratio. The power ratio is usually 1:2, 1:4,
1:8, 1:16, 1:32, all together five types. For the ratio 1:2, there are two types for
transmission, the power--even transmission and non-even transmission (can be set). For
other ratio, the power will be transmitted to the branch fiber evenly. For the upstream
transmission, the optical signal of the branch optical fiber will be coupled to the trunk
optical fiber and then transmitted to the optical line terminal (OLT). No external power but
incoming light bundle is needed for the splitter. And only power loss will be increased,
because they will share the input (downstream) power. The loss is called loss of splitter or
branch ratio, always by dB. And it is determined by the number of output ports.
Splitter consists of one trunk optical interface and several branch optical interfaces.
Carriers can choose different splitters according to different structure of the network.
2.4.2 Splitters installation indoor
When the splitter is installed in the OLT side, shelf-mounting splitter is suggested. It is
easy for installation.
Step 1: Put the splitter on the chassis flat and keep it close the lateral columns of the shelf.
Step 2: Fasten the screws to fix the splitter with the shelf.
Different splitters may be chosen according to the routing when the splitter is far from
OLT equipment or links up-layer splitter. Specific installation method is according to the
situation of actual project. After power-on, invisible light may be emitted from the optical
interface, when the optical interface is not connected to optical connector or the protective
cap is opened. So don’t look at the optical interface directly. To keep the optical connector
clean, make sure to close the protective cap within 10 seconds. If optical connector is not
installed in the optical interface, make sure to close the protective cap.
Step 1: Take off the protective cap of the OLT optical interface.
Step 2: Take off the protective cap of the trunk optical fiber connector of splitter. Then put
it
Page 12 of 17 pages
13. VISTA 1600C EPON OLT Installation Manual
connected with OLT or branch optical interface of other splitter.
Step 3: Connect the branch optical fiber of the splitter to the ODF(Optical Distribution
Frame).
Routing is according to the situation of actual project. Then connect the optical
fiber to the customer side according to their requirements
2.5 Routing recommendation in the installation
2.5.1 VISTA 1600C installed on the working platform
When the VISTA 1600C is installed on the working platform solely, all service cables of
interface will be routed in the front of the equipment. The power cable of the equipment
will be routed from the back.
2.5.2 VISTA 1600C installed in the cabinet
When the equipment is installed in the 19-inch standard cabinet, the service cables
should be bundled up in the holder on the left side of the cabinet. According to the
situation in the equipment room (the signal cables are routed from the cabling rack on top
of the cabinet, or from the cabling slot under the ground), upward cabling mode or
downward cabling mode will be chosen. All interfaces of signal cables should be put at the
bottom of the cabinet (They are not allowed to be put outside the cabinet, where they are
easy to be touched). The power cable should be routed at the back of the machine cabinet
on the left side. According to the situation in the equipment room of the central office (DC
power cabinet, anti-lighting box, terminal bar, etc), upward cabling mode or downward
cabling mode will be chosen.
2.6 Cable bundling during installation
2.6.1 Correct usage of the tag
Before bundling up the cables, please write the tag correctly and then attach it at
appropriate place.
2.6.2 Attentions during cable bundling
After bundling up, the cables must be lank and tidy in the cabinet. No twisting and
bending are allowed.
Page 13 of 17 pages
14. VISTA 1600C EPON OLT Installation Manual
Figure 2-6 Cable bundling (1)
The bending radius of the cable should be no less than 2 times of cable diameters. At
the interface connector, the bending radius shall be no less than 5 times of the
diameters.
Different types of cables (power cable, signal cable, etc) should be routed and
bundled up separately. Mixed bundling-up is not allowed. When they are near each
other, cross routing may be adopted. When parallel routing, the distance between
power cable and signal cable should be no less than 30 mm.
The cabling rack inside and outside the cabinet and the cabling slot should be smooth,
without sharp edges and corners.
The metallic hole which the cable will get through should have smooth and rounding
surface, or have insulated bushing.
Proper cable tie should be chosen when bundling up the cables. Two or more than two
cable tie together for bundling up the cables are not allowed.
After bundling up the cables with cable tie, extra should be cut off. The incision should
be smooth without sharp corner.
Figure 2-7 Cable bundling (2)
If the cables will get bending, then bundle the cables before they get bending. The
cable tie will not appear in the bending point, in order to prevent the cable from
breaking because of great stress.
Page 14 of 17 pages
15. VISTA 1600C EPON OLT Installation Manual
Figure 2-8 Cable bundling (3)
The cables, which do not need to assemble, or the extra part of the cables should be
folded and bundled up in appropriate place in the cabinet or the slots. Appropriate
place means it will not affect the running of the equipment, not damage the
equipment or not damage the cable.
The 220V AC power cable should not be bundled up in the track of removable
components.
For the power cable of the removable components such as grounding cable of door,
some extra will be reserved after installing, to prevent the cable from stress. When
removable component reaches the installation location, make sure the extra cable will
not contact heat, sharp corner, edges and so on. When avoiding heat is not possible,
the cable must be high-temperature cable.
If the cable connector is fixed by screw, the screw or nut should be firm and some
measures for anti-loosening will be adopted.
For some hard power cable, the cable should be fixed near the end point, to prevent
the stress near the end point.
Please don’t use screw which made by yourself to fix the end point.
Power cable with the same type and the same routing direction should be bundled up
together. Then cables in the cable bundle should be clean and lank.
No knotting are allowed when bundling up the cables or routing.
For the cold-pressing end point (such as air switch), the metallic part of the
old-pressing end point should not be exposed outside when assembling.
2.7 Checking after installation
When checking whether the installation is correct, please make sure the power supply
is off, to prevent the damage of body and the equipment. After installation, please check
