This is sound advice in theory, but IT professionals face a ‘Perfect Storm’ of challenges:
• Production system availability expectations are extremely high
• IT supports very complex production environments with multiple inter-dependencies
• the volume, diversity, and acceleration of changes requested of production systems is overwhelming
IT organizations that adopt a structured change and release management approach also enjoy a smoother, more mature, change process. ‘Second generation’ virtualization serves as an enabling technology upon which to create a structured approach to improve change and release management maturity. It introduces both benefits and challenges of its own. While virtualization is not a complete answer for change and release management, it offers promise that IT organizations should consider.

“Innovate or die” may sound extreme, but it’s the only way to thrive in today’s ever competitive market. Bernd Greifeneder, CTO of Dynatrace, wanted to ensure that the company was relevant 5 years from now so he formed an internal incubator with one goal: transform Dynatrace into a Cloud Native DevOps organization.
The incubator focused on what the company needed to do in order to integrate nascent cloud technologies so that they wouldn’t be left in the dust when the inevitable tipping point to cloud arrives. Transforming into a cloud native company would allow for rapid release cycles and provide an embedded feedback loop.
The Results: Dynatrace now has a 99.998% availability of SaaS Service and can deploy changes within an hour if necessary. In parallel, a new SaaS and managed offering is released every 2 weeks with 170 production updates per day.

Virtualized hardware is all the rage in enterprise IT. However, is a purely virtualization-focused, Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) approach really the right one for enterprises and government? What’s becoming clear is that virtualization is but one piece of a much bigger strategy for fast, self-service deployment and ultra-efficient operations, referred to as “platform as a service” (PaaS). PaaS leverages a wider set of middleware capabilities to enable application deployment in minutes rather than days and reduces operational costs by up to 90%. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
