This chapter discusses the network layer and its goals of understanding network layer services like routing versus forwarding, how routers work, and dealing with issues of scale. It covers topics such as virtual circuit and datagram networks, the components inside routers, IP and IPv6 addressing, routing algorithms like link state and distance vector used on the Internet, and routing protocols including RIP, OSPF, and BGP. The network layer encapsulates data from the transport layer into datagrams and routers examine header fields to forward packets.
