Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana) is a medium-sized tree typically found on poorer soils along the Appalachian Mountains from New York to Alabama. It grows 9-18 meters tall under normal conditions and up to 0.5 meters in diameter, with a typical lifespan of 65-90 years. The pine has short, twisted yellow-green needle pairs and 4-7 centimeter cones that may remain on the tree for years, sometimes releasing seeds in the second year. Virginia pine is useful for reforestation, providing wildlife habitat, and is used for Christmas trees and wood pulp/lumber, despite its sharp needles and yellow winter color.
