Alma Rosé was a famous violinist born into a musical family in Vienna in 1906. She founded the women's orchestra Die Wiener Walzermädeln but it disbanded when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. During WWII, she was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp where she was put in charge of the camp's Women's Orchestra. Though conditions were terrible, none of the musicians died under her leadership in the 10 months she conducted. Alma herself died in 1944 at the camp from food poisoning at age 37.
