Join Romina Morandini and Dario Kanevsky for their panel discussions about the avenues we encounter in a multicultural workforce, such as the complexity of languages, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in leadership, and the international interactions between companies.
In 2013, Telefónica carried out the largest ever survey of Millennials, creating a new understanding of the beliefs and motivations of the Millennials generation. In 2014, the survey was updated exploring the opinions of 6,702 Millennials, aged 18-30 across 18 countries in three regions.
This year’s survey found that today’s 18-30 year-olds are largely satisfied with their lives and decidedly optimistic about their prospects for the future.
This section of data explores the motivations and influences that drive Millennials and discovers where in the world they are.

Project 1 Interview Essay Conduct a brief interview with an Asian.docxdessiechisomjj4
Project 1: Interview Essay
Conduct a brief interview with an Asian immigrant to ask about their immigration story and push-pull factors. This can last 5-15 minutes. Then, write a 2 paragraphs on the DB.
You do
not
have to include the person’s real name! Immigration status is a sensitive topic, so please understand if someone does not want to be interviewed. Students have interviewed friends, family members, people in their community, and other students.
Project 1: Prompt
1.
Brief facts:
Around what age did they immigrate? How old are they now (in my 30s is acceptable)? What push-pull factors led them to immigrate to the U.S.? (You may have to explain what push-pull factors are.)
2. Add your own comments/perspective and perhaps even your own immigration story. What aspects of their story did you find interesting or surprising? What aspects were familiar to you?
Example:
I conducted a 10 minute interview with my neighbor "Dr. Villanueva" who immigrated to the U.S. over 45 years ago at the age of 26. I asked him about his push and pull factors. What reasons did he have for leaving his home country and why did he choose the U.S. as his new home? He stated that he wanted to leave the Philippines for a better life and more opportunities. He had grown up as the youngest of nine children and was very poor, but was able to study medicine and become a medical doctor specializing in ophthalmology. He heard that the U.S. was encouraging medical professionals to work there especially if they were fluent in English. According to our reading "Filipinos in America," (Lee 2015) the Philippines was a colony of the U.S. from 1898-1945 and English was taught in the education system (Lee, p. 90). Plus, many Filipinos then and still today dream about immigrating to the United States to improve their educational and financial opportunities. Dr. Villanueva came to the U.S. after the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act abolished national quotas but limited immigration from Asia to educated professionals. When I asked if he felt that he experienced discrimination, Dr. Villanueva said yes, many times, but overall he is glad that he immigrated because his children had so many more opportunities in the U.S. Often, people still think that he is a foreigner or can't speak English. There have been a few occasions that people directed racial slurs at him, but he has not experienced any physical harm.
Dr. Villanueva seems to fit much of the data on Asian Americans that we studied in this class. However, I noticed some ways that he did not. For example, {etc....} Dr. Villanueva's story is much different than my grandparents' story who immigrated from __ and did not have college degrees when they arrived. [ADD YOUR PERSONAL REFLECTIONS ON THE INTERVIEW.]

Dr. Nicholas D. Hartlep is currently an Assistant Professor of Educational Foundations at Illinois State University. Prior to that, he was an Advanced Opportunity Program Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, an “Urban 13” University, where he earned a Ph.D. in the Social Foundations of Urban Education and was named an “Outstanding Doctoral Student.” Dr. Hartlep also has a Master of Science Degree in K-12 Education and Bachelor of Science Degree in Teaching, both conferred from Winona State University. As a former public school teacher he has taught in Rochester, Minnesota and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as abroad in Quito, Ecuador. Dr. Hartlep’s research interests include urban in-service teachers’ dispositions, the impact neoliberalism is having on schools and society, the model minority stereotype of Asians, and transracial adoption. His interest in transracial adoption stems from the fact he was adopted from Seoul, South Korea when he was approximately 16-months old. In 2011, Dr. Hartlep received a scholarship from the Global Overseas Adoptees’ Link (GOA’L) that allowed him to return to Korea to see where he was born. His scholarly books include Going Public: Critical Race Theory & Issues of Social Justice (2010), The Model Minority Stereotype: Demystifying Asian American Success (2013), Unhooking from Whiteness: The Key to Dismantling Racism in the United States (2013), and The Model Minority Stereotype Reader: Critical and Challenging Readings for the 21st Century (2014). BUSINESS CASE FOR DIVERSITY
Chapter Objectives
After reading this chapter, you should be able to:
x explain why managing diversity in the workplace is an important
component of business operations
x show how U.S. demographics shifts affect workplace diversity.
x understand the business case for diversity in the workplace.
x defend the business case for valuing diversity.
Background
[Type the company name] | Background: Business Case for Diversity B3
Diversity is about recognizing, respecting and valuing differences based on
primary differences such as ethnicity, sex, gender, color, age, race, religion,
disability, national origin and sexual orientation. It also includes an infinite
range of individual unique characteristics and experiences, such as
communication style, career path, life experience, educational background,
geographic location, income level, marital status, military experience, parental
status and other variables that influence personal perspectives.
These life experiences and personal perspectives make us react and
think differently, approach challenges and solve problems differently, make
suggestions and decisions differently, and see different opportunities. An
organization can minimize the costs that are associated with a lack of managing
diversity comprehension by understanding what diversity is, why it matters,
and how to effectively manage a business in terms of diversity.1 The first
approach addressed in the text to effectively manage those primary differences
listed above is valuing diversity (accepting, understanding and respecting
diversity).
Valuing diversity is necessary because of the demographic shifts that
affect the workplace, because it makes good business sense to do so and also
because of the laws created to promote equal opportunity despite race, religion,
age, sex and physical or mental ability.2 As we continue considering why we
should value diversity in the workplace, let’s look further at the demographic
trends and changes affecting the U.S. population and thus the U.S. workplace.
In 2011, Forbes conducted research where they interviewed 321
executives with direct responsibility or oversight for their companies’ diversity
and inclusion programs. All respondents worked for large global enterprises
with annual revenues of more than US$500 million. More than 40% worked for
companies with annual revenues of $US5 billion or more. The conclusion of this
study was that diversity is a key driver of innovation and is a critical component

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
