Design Brief
The client Assisi family is due for a larger house; they currently live in a 3 bedroom 1
bathroom house. To accommodate a third child on the way, the family would like to
renovate creating a four bedrooms, two-bathroom house including an extra living

area and larger kitchen. The family do not what to move houses or rebuild their
entire house, as they love the area and surrounding facilities; above all else they can
not afford to move or rebuild. The client wishes to have many options to choose
from with the house extension, they need a house that can efficiently sustain four
bedrooms two bathrooms, whilst maintaining flow and an open plan living area,
making thehouse extremely familyorientated.
The client Assisi family has expectations to oversee the entire design processes. The
client expects to see an initial stage (part A) were a range of drawings are being
produced such as, bubble diagrams to show a rough idea of what the client may
expect from the final outcome. The main influence to meet the client’s expectations
is to make sure in the designs that there are four bedrooms and two bathrooms, this
will need to influence the entire build. The last expectation of the client is to createa
fully functional builder and electrical plans, as the client will need these to complete
their renovation. The process of this problem will account for drawings to meet the
clients expectations in their options for the extension, a set of 2D house plans and
3D colour sketch’s including an initial range of bubble diagrams. Consisting of
isometric drawings and planometric drawings for presentational views. Showing the
client a rough idea of what they will expect from the chosen design. After the client
has chosen the best-suited design for their needs, a range of digital 3D renderings
will becreated, along side a set ofbuilding and electricalplans.
The type of research that will be done consists of brainstorming ideas for the house
extension and research into what the client’s needs and expectations are to make
the best possible design for the clients needs. All images that are found and used as
ideas for the design will be included in the design folio with appropriate referencing.
Other research will consist of material research as this will help choose the
appropriate materials to use for the house extension, the materials will also have to
be approved bytheclient.
Project management will play a key role in completing the client’s request, as there
will have to be a range of plans made for adequate results. All plans need to be
completed satisfying government regulations, builders, plumbers and electricians
all of these plans will need to be confirmed by the client before the 3D modeling can
begin. In order to do this in the most efficient way all of the non-digital drawings will
need to be completed first for the client, as the client may what to change certain
aspects and alter the main ideas. Once the client confirms the sketches the digital
drawings and 3D models will start to be created in the program Achicad. The final
product that will be created is a full house extension that will transform a 3-
bedroom 1-bathroom house, into a 4-bedroom 2-bathroom house with a full double
garage and kitchen/living room extension. All rooms will be suited to the client’s
requests; needs and will fulfill the client’s expectations. All plans needed to satisfy
thecriteria that willbe supplied to the client.

Drawings both 2D and 3D digital and non-digital will be created overtime to create a
folio of work that will be presented to the client. They include, sketches that consist
of full detailed drawings of the house, which must include colour, this will show the
client what is going to happen and what the final house may look like. The next set
of items that will be included in the folio will be a printed version of rendered images
taken from the outside and inside of the house to show the client what the
extension will achieve and how the finish product will look. A final media
presentation will be created to show off the before and after’s of the house
extension and also give a virtual flythrough, providing the client with another sense
of satisfaction to what the final product will look like. Finally a range of electrical
drawings will be supplied for both the client and the electrician. An unfurnished
floor plan will also be created with full measurements for the builders of the house
extension so that theywillbe ableto completethehouse.
Design Factors
 User centered design:
What are theusers needs:
Gender
Financial status of theclient (what is thebudget of theclient?)
What is theinterest of theclient?
Children of allages
Work status
Environmental surroundings. Locationof thehouse is it in a rural or suburban area
what facilitiesare around thearea.
 Elements and principlesof design
Colour:
The palateshouldbechosen to suit thefamily and thechildren.
Space:
The reason for theextension on thehouse is to allowthefamily to have more space
and to maximize theliving space.
Balance:
Aspects of thehouse should bebalanced.
Line:
All drawings must followa line to represent their 3D qualities used mostly for
drawings.
Texture:
The visual descriptionof an object, wallin brickpattern or what does this wall feel
likewith thistypeof paint.
Tone:
Making certain aspects of thehouse stand out to theeye.

Design criteria
 The materials for thisbuildwill need to be sustainable with colour’sto suit the
client. Thematerials will also need to be cost effective and must beeasy to
maintain
Natural light andairflow used throughout thehouse
 The ageand style to suit? (2 adults 3 children) Theusers religionor cultural
background,the user interests.
 Financial and social positionoftheuser, usually identified byemployment status,
salary level or educationalbackground.
 How much space, will theuser need? An open plan living design?
Is thedesign user centered and practicalfor thepeopleliving in it?

ByMitchellVella 7
 The designneeds to fit theclient’s personal lifesuch as medical problemsas if
theclient has troublewalking up stairs it wouldbe wise to keep theextension on
a single level; in thiscase theclient has asked for a second story renovation.
 Function doublegarage with easy to clean materials used and a simple drive
through garageto make it easy for theclient to move from thegarageto the
backyard if need be.
 Small outdoorentertainment area suited to theyoung family
 The client would liketo keep theoutside timberslats running through thegarage
to keep costs down and adda feature to theflow of thehouse.
 Stylish kitchenand dining area with small breakfast bench and a dining tableto
suit thegrowing size ofthe family
 All threechildren’s bedroomsneed to be placed on thetop storywith a large
living area to keep thechildrenentertained.
 Where is theuser based what surroundings does theclient have, will the house
be subject to very coldwinters or very hot summers.
 Airflow: there will need to be airflow throughout thebuilding asit is a key design
element, Lots of windows to allow thenatural light andlandscape in, shutters
around thebuilding to also increase thebuildings airflow.
 Modernized final house design, using materials and objects.
 Natural lighting willbea key item in thedesign process; thiswill allow natural
light andair to come through thehouse.

Graphical presentations
The first sets ofdrawings that willbe presented consist of a range of different
sketches from bubblediagrams to 3D final presentations. These sketches are for the
client, theyrepresent different ways that thingscan bedone such as thefloor plan
layout,thisis very helpfulas it can create a broadamount of optionsfor theclient;
theway that these sketches willbe done is by using standard A4 paperwith theuse
of both led penciland colour pencils. The next sets of drawings that will be
presented consist of 2D and 3D digitalpresentationsand layouts. This set of
drawings will show the client what thefinal layout will looklikeat its last stage
before sending to a builder. In thepackageofwork therewill also beboth electrical
and builders layout drawings, this will enablethe client to go to a builderand
electrician and present thedrawings to them if theclient is thinking of continuing
with the renovation. Theway that the2D and 3D drawings were created was by
using theprogramAchicadand following thecorrect methodsand procedures to
get to thelayout stage.
Evaluation
A full packageof contents has been delivered to the client; all drawings are present
and have fulfilled the client’s expectations. The initialideafor thehouse was to build
thefloor outwardof the first floorto fit three children’sbedrooms; then creating a

parents retreat up stairs of thesecond floor. After looking at that initialdesign it
was found that thehouse would loosetheopen plan living area and it would be far
too expensive to builddirectlyout from theexisting house, another reason this
design was not chosen was because thefamily wouldbe losing too much backyard
area. The design that was chosen was theoppositefromtheinitial, as thesecond
story contains thethree bedrooms, a main bathroomand second living area. This
allowed for more room downstairs as there was a full doubledrive through garage
extended dining / living area and kitchen,a study / spare room, themaster bedroom
and ensuite, a powderroom and finally a laundry. It is usually traditionalfor the
master bedroomto be up stairs in a two-storyhouse but for this designhaving the
three children’sbedrooms connect to themain living area willkeep thekids
entertained and when grown up theywill have their own area to staycivilized in. as
thehouse was going through a full renovation, thestyling of thehouse was chosen
bythe client to bevery modernized and consist of woodtouch’son both theinside
and outsideof thehouse. Theclient also wanted to use certain aspects of the
house’s outsideon the inside, thiscan be seen in theuse of materials that is in the
kitchen. The client has listed in thedesign criteria that airflow willneed to be used
throughout thehouse, this is seen in most rooms especiallyin themain living areas
such as thekitchenand dining. All of thewindows and doors can be opened fully
and theuse of windows in thekitchen willallow theclient to open up each window
individually allowing themost efficient airflowpossible. All methodsand procedures
have been used correctlythroughout thedesign process, theprogram Achicadhas
allowed for multiplyrenderings to occur to show theclient thepresentation views.
The programhas also allowed for builders plans and electricalplans to be
configured. Overall thetask has been completed to the client’s full expectations.
