In an effort to find new and innovative ways to teach English as a second (or foreign) language, many
are coming upon AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) to supplement language education.
As we found with the introduction of computers, and then the wave of tablets (iPads and the like), if
there is not a compelling reason to incorporate these devices, and if content is not available to
support learning, then time and money can soon be wasted. To that end, let’s look at need and
efficacy, as we discuss the big question… Why is VR needed for language study?
Virtual reality offers up some compelling reasons as to why it is a technology uniquely suited to both
classrooms and self-study at home.
Speaking practice
Language teachers are not always available, and one-on-one time
with students is limited
Student affect
Attending to student emotional well-being with regards to
anxiety, risk-taking, motivation and so on
Self-directed, self-paced learning
Need to have more opportunities for student agency and control
over their own learning, and pacing
Effective scene-setting
Learners need to “get out of the classroom” and into a different
scene, even virtually
More instances
Whether through reading, writing, listening or other means, we
need to increase exposure to language
Build confidence
There is a need to experience certain situations to increase
confidence for future interactions
I hear, I forget. I see, I remember. I do, I understand.

The Veative ELL Series was designed in such a way as to leverage each of the key elements described
on the previous pages. It is true that any VR learning app will “wow” students, engage them, and
take them to another world. These are the basics which can be gained through VR. However, that
cannot be enough.
This series was built on a few, key precepts:
 Speaking practice is important, and a skill that students cannot typically work on alone
 Leveling is important, both for continuous engagement and efficacy
 Rich content for a variety of students and levels (plenty to do)
 Remove distractors to allow for concentrated focus on the target language
 Create a judgement-free zone to allow for free expression and risk taking
 Work from the phoneme, to key words, to sentence, to conversation
 Consistent variety (different voices and accents, different places and vocabulary)
Why device matters
This series was built for the Veative EduPro VR headset, for a number of reasons. The EduPro was
built for education, and not as a consumer/gaming product repurposed for education. This is a key
distinction. The EduPro offers the largest storage space of any mobile VR on the market, in a
controlled environment made for the classroom, and learning.
There are a number of very nice devices on the market, and all of them work or play in a similar
fashion. However, the key question which needs to be asked is this… “Am I looking for the latest
device that everyone is talking about, or am I looking for the best and most
effective content in which to engage my learners?”
7
Who is this for?
The target user is a 2nd language (English) learner between the ages of 15-24. This is not
meant as a foundational course, and this better serves learners with some English ability,
looking for opportunities to expand their vocabulary, work on sound production and
encounter model dialogues spoken by native speakers.
As the target audience is comprised of learners with some ability in English, the bulk of the
lessons are geared toward intermediate level students, who are ready to take on a more
active, speaking role. The VR allows for this, utilizing speech recognition even when offline!
Among the four skills most associated with language learning, speaking is the most
problematic to learn on one’s own, because of the need for help from an instructor, or a
native speaker. The VR allows a unique opportunity to work on this skill in a judgement-free
environment, away from prying eyes and ears. Students are placed in realistic scenes,
allowing for repetitive work using voice recognition. Here are some key elements:
 An environment free from judgement (a truly personal experience)
 Immediate access to a variety of scenes and settings
 Voice recognition allows for vocalization and speech practice
 Learner agency and a sense of presence
 Instant feedback on pronunciation and speech
 Virtual scenarios which allow for confidence building (practice till you’ve got it!)
 4 levels, from Fundamental to Advanced
 Reading, writing and listening can be studied in isolation, but speaking practice
cannot… until now
How to use this series
This was intentionally made as a self-study tool, to work on speaking skills, vocabulary
development, and confidence. Because there is speaking practice which uses a mic, it is best
to have some space between students. This is best used for in Language Labs, English circles
or clubs, libraries (in a separate room), after-school use and so on. An average school would
purchase 5-10 devices and allow students to sign them out and practice. Usage is tracked via
analytics, ensuring that these are used for the right purpose.

The VR Study Room
There are four major functions which may be found in the study room. From left to right,
these consist of:
• Word Practice
• Short Sentences for Daily Use
• Courses/Lessons (including conversation practice)
• Dialogue Quiz
In the study room, you will meet Monica, who will act as your personal assistant. Monica will
show the functions and help to guide you.
10
Word Practice
Starting from the left is Word Practice. This lets you get to know some of the key words that
will be used in the exercises, and practice saying them.
To begin, click the bookcase, or Word Practice.
You will be given two choices.
Conversation Words, shown here, are key
words. You click the word and it will be
spoken by Monica. You will then say the
word.
Automatically, Monica will say the word
again, and this will be followed by the word
you said, which has been recorded.
This allows you to hear what you sound like.
You can then listen again, re-record, or go
on to the next word.
11
Conversation Words differ in that an image
is shown with the word, to contextualize
that vocabulary item.
You click the word and it will be spoken by
Monica. You will then say the word.
Automatically, Monica will say the word
again, and this will be followed by the word
you said, which has been recorded.
This allows you to hear what you sound like. You can then listen again, re-record, or go on to
the next word.
Sentence Practice
You will get a chance to practice some short sentences which are often used in daily life.
There are five sentences for you to practice.
Click Sentence Practice, as shown below
The sentences will be presented to you, spoken and then you will repeat. Monica will then
let you know if your pronunciation and intonation were correct. If so, there is instant
feedback (Perfect!).
If it is not a good sentence, you will get a chance to Try Again.
There are 5 sentences presented each time (from a bank of 110 sentences).
12
Lessons (with Conversation)
This exercise allows for conversation practice with voice recognition. Click on the blue book
(Lessons/Courses) to proceed.
You will get the following choices.
Choose Conversation to continue.
(Selecting Phonetic Symbol will provide pronunciation practice. See the section on
Pronunciation to learn more about that process.)
13
From within this screen, you will find a menu of categories on the left.
Select one category and there are a variety of scenarios to choose from.
(Notice the level of the dialogue on the top-left corner of each scenario.)
Pro Tip:
The conversations are leveled. The tags at the top-left of each conversation box indicate
the level. Start with Fundamental, then Basic, Intermediate, and then challenge yourself
with Advanced level conversations. Each higher level is longer, and has more difficult
words and grammar.
14
Select the scene and then click the PLAY button (center) to start the dialogue.
In each lesson, the dialogue will be modeled. Listen and pay attention to the characters.
Pro Tip:
Use the left and right arrows to the side of the boxes to find more
scenarios based around that category topic.
15
When the conversation ends, you will be given a choice to play either character. You will
then embody that person and read their part of the dialogue shown on the screen.
Now you will speak directly with Doris. When there is a MIC icon on the screen, it is your
turn to talk (you do not need to click that icon or any button… just speak).
You will be given feedback on your reply
Pro Tip:
Speak clearly and ONE TIME only. The mic will record your voice and then
compare again a native speaker. All of that happens in 1-2 seconds (unless it is
a long passage). Just say once, and then be quiet.
16
When you are finished, you will see how
many of the tasks you have done. You
will need to do this a few times to get all
5 stars. To get those, you will need to
play each of the characters, do their role
perfectly and so on.
Repetition is a very good thing, and this
series encourages a lot of repetition,
which leads to fluency.
Experiment with these options, in the
box, to turn on and off the text on the
screen, and so on.
We are always looking for ways for you
to challenge yourself when learning
English!
When finished with this section, click the BACK button on the controller to return to the
category page, or keep clicking the BACK button to get back to the Study Room (with
Monica).
17
Quiz
The Quiz is a listening/speaking
test, which you will find by clicking
on the paper & pencil.
There are a series of 5 questions
(random questions) which will be
spoken. After each question, you
will then be given a multiple
choice of 4 answers, from which
you will need to SPEAK your
answer.
There is an immediate score after
each question.
18
Listen to the question carefully…
Choose the best answer, and SAY the answer.
If correct, it will be shown in green.
If not, it will be shown in red.
Your performance will be scored. 5/5 is perfect,
but 4/5 is still excellent!
Click the arrow to try another quiz.
Click the door to return to the Study Room (with
Monica).
Pro Tip:
When you see the MIC, you need
to speak. You do NOT need to
click/hold the button or icon, just
say it once, and then be quiet (as
the VR records your voice and
checks your answer).

AE1 - Greet a friend (Fundamental)
Ruby Adams Hi, Andy. How have you been?
Andy Chen All right. And you?
Ruby Adams Just keeping busy.
Andy Chen What are you busy with?
Ruby Adams I am working on my report.
Andy Chen I see. Good luck.
A01 - Have a friend visiting (Int)
Jennifer Morris It's really nice to have you here, Sarah. Just make yourself at home.
Sarah Yang Thanks for inviting me. Your home's beautiful and comfortable, Jenny.
Jennifer Morris Thank you, Sarah. Have some coffee, and help yourself to the
cheesecake.
Sarah Yang Thanks. They're my favorites.
Jennifer Morris I bought the cake from the bakery this morning.
Sarah Yang Is it the bakery around the corner?
Jennifer Morris Yes, it is. Their cheesecake is perfect with coffee, and their cookies are
amazing, too.
Sarah Yang I haven't been to that bakery yet. Actually, I am still not very familiar
with this area.
Jennifer Morris I can show you around the neighbourhood later this afternoon if you
like.
Sarah Yang Wow, that'd be awesome. It's so kind of you to say so. Thanks a million.
Jennifer Morris No trouble at all. I'm glad I can help.
24
A02 - Talk about family background (Int)
Sarah Yang Is this your family?
Jennifer Morris Yes. These are my parents-in-law, and this is John's brother. They are
twins.
Sarah Yang No wonder they look so much alike. And who is this beautiful lady?
Jennifer Morris Oh, that's John's older sister, Laura. Actually, she's working in Shanghai
now.
Sarah Yang Really? What does she do?
Jennifer Morris She's a financial analyst. She works for a local bank there.
Sarah Yang I see. Have you been there to see her?
Jennifer Morris Not yet, but we are planning to go soon. We'd also like to stop in your
hometown, Suzhou.
Sarah Yang You absolutely have to visit there. I can ask my little brother to show you
the sights. He's a travel agent.
Jennifer Morris That'd be great! I'll tell you before we go.
Sarah Yang Okay, great!
A03 - Chat about weather (Basic)
Sarah Yang Good afternoon, Mr. Morris.
John Morris Hi, Sarah. Sheesh! It's raining cats and dogs!
Sarah Yang Yup, it sure is! Is it always like this in this season?
John Morris Not really. It usually doesn't rains so hard. Do you get a lot of rain in your
hometown?
Sarah Yang Uh-huh, we have a rainy season in the beginning of summer.
John Morris Does it rain as hard as this?
Sarah Yang Yeah, sometimes. During summer and early fall, we have typhoons, too.
John Morris Do they cause serious damage?
Sarah Yang Only sometimes. But overall the weather is pretty nice all year round.
John Morris That's great. In winter we have snowstorms, and now we have rain storms
like this.
25
A04 - Make plans for the weekend (Int)
John Morris Jenny, do we have any plans this weekend?
Jennifer Morris Not that I know of. What's up?
John Morris Mr. Bennet invited us to his wife's art exhibit. Would you like to go with
me?
Jennifer Morris Sure. He's your boss, so I had better show up. And I like Mrs. Bennet a
lot.
John Morris Is Saturday afternoon ok with you?
Jennifer Morris Oh, I forgot I'd promised Sarah I'd visit her home this Saturday
afternoon. How about Saturday morning?
John Morris I'm going to play baseball with the guys at work from nine to eleven.
Jennifer Morris So that leaves Sunday.
John Morris Sunday's good. I'm free all day.
Jennifer Morris Me, too. Then I can do the laundry at home on Saturday morning.
A05 - Plan to Celebrate a Birthday (Basic)
Tim Davis Hey, Andy. Do you know this Friday is Emma's birthday?
Andy Chen Nope, I didn't know. Have you got any plans?
Tim Davis Not yet. What about if I give her a surprise party?
Andy Chen I don't think she's the kind of girls who love getting surprised.
Tim Davis How do you usually celebrate your birthdays here?
Andy Chen We just get together with family or friends, and eat and have fun.
Tim Davis Well, at least I should find a nice birthday gift for Emma.
Andy Chen Uh-huh, that'd be good for your relationship.
Tim Davis Can you go to the mall with me after class? I need your opinion.
Andy Chen Sure. No problem.
26
A06 - Rent an apartment (Int)
Andrew Moore I'm looking for a two-bedroom apartment with a balcony.
Letting Agent Let's see… I think this is what you are looking for. It's on Green Avenue.
Andrew Moore Is that in a quiet neighborhood? My wife doesn't like noise.
Letting Agent Yes, it is quiet and safe. The apartment's on the 10th floor.
Andrew Moore Sounds good! How much is the rent?
Letting Agent It's fourteen hundred dollars a month, including utilities and
maintenance fees.
Andrew Moore How much of a security deposit do I have to pay?
Letting Agent The security deposit is two-month's rent. We also require the first
month's rent up front.
Andrew Moore Okay. Hmm… are pets allowed in this building?
Letting Agent Yes, but pets aren't allowed to disturb neighbors.
Andrew Moore That'd be fine. Our cat won't cause a nuisance. So may I see the place
first?
Letting Agent Definitely. Let me get the key.
A07 - Move to a new apartment (Int)
Vanessa Moore Andrew, don't you think the end table's kind of in the way?
Andrew Moore Yeah, a little bit. Maybe we could just move the sofa to make room for
it.
Vanessa Moore Then the sofa will be too close to the wall.
Andrew Moore Hmm…why don't we place the end table up against the wall?
Vanessa Moore That sounds pretty good. There's a socket on the wall. We can get a
trendy lamp for the table.
Andrew Moore That's great. With a lamp, it'd become a cozy corner for reading.
Vanessa Moore We need some cushions for the sofa, too.
Andrew Moore I'd like to put a round dining table by the windows.
Vanessa Moore That's a lovely idea. Just imagine the sunshine pouring in while we're
having breakfast.
Andrew Moore Would you like to shop online or in person?
Vanessa Moore I prefer visiting a furniture store to see what I can find.
27
A08 - Protect the environment (Adv)
Vanessa Moore Andrew, can you help me clean up the kitchen?
Andrew Moore Sure! I'll take out the trash.
Vanessa Moore But don't throw those two containers away. I'll reuse them for pepper
and cinnamon.
Andrew Moore Okay. How about these glass jars?

dyed?
Doris I only got some red highlights. What do you think of it?
Amanda Morgan I love the color. It's brilliant but not too bright. You've got a really good
hairdresser.
Doris Yup, I've been with her for five years. Sometimes I'm afraid she'll move
somewhere else.
Amanda Morgan Ha, no wonder people say a woman's relationship with her hairdresser is
unique.

Emma Chang So how was your date with him?
Ruby Adams Quite nice, actually. The movie was a lot of fun, and the dinner was excellent,
too.
Emma Chang Then what did you think of Ryan?
Ruby Adams He's smart and he has a great sense of humor, but he's not my type.

G09 - Meet Internet friends (Int)
Chris Hello, I'm Chris, and what's your name?
Mia Hi, I'm Mia. What's your ID in the game?
Chris It's Sparkle. I always play as a warrior. How about you?
Mia I like to play as a cleric. My nickname in the game is Meko.
Chris Oh, so you're the one who often healed me in the quests. I didn't expect that I'd
have a chance to meet you.
Mia Are you surprised to learn that I'm a girl?
Chris Nope, not at all. Girls usually like to be healers in role-playing games.
Mia It's the first time I've ever met any of my internet friends. I'm a little nervous.
Chris Take it easy. They're all nice guys, and we've been talking and playing together
online for two years.
Mia Yeah, I know. I'm glad to meet you guys finally in real life.
G10 - Have a quarrel with his girlfriend (Adv)
Tim Davis I had a quarrel with Emma again last night.
Andy Chen What was it about?
Tim Davis She just came back from Japan, and she's going to go to Singapore for
another concert next month.
Andy Chen So did you get mad at her about it?
Tim Davis No, I didn't. I just tried to talk her out of spending so much money on
concerts.
Andy Chen But that's her money, and she really enjoys listening to pop music.
Tim Davis That's exactly what she said to me, but she got all sulky about it.
Andy Chen Maybe, if you're her boyfriend, you'd better not try to change her way of life.
Tim Davis I know, but I just couldn't help it, and I meant well.
Andy Chen You may mean well, but suggestions like that only cause arguments, and can
destroy a relationship.
Tim Davis You're right about that. We've been quarrelling over trifles a lot.
Andy Chen To make up, you ought to apologize to her first.
66
G11 - Split up with her boyfriend (Int)
Ruby Adams You look down today. What's up?
Emma Chang Tim and I broke up last week.
Ruby Adams How come? You said he was a really nice guy.
Emma Chang Yeah, he is, but we have a lot of differences.
Ruby Adams No two people are exactly the same. There's really no such thing as a match
made in heaven.
Emma Chang He's a down-to-earth guy and cares a lot about the future, but I prefer to
enjoy the present while I can.
Ruby Adams I see. So you've each got a different take on life.
Emma Chang We kept fighting a lot, and I got tired of that.
Ruby Adams Is there any chance of you two getting back together?
Emma Chang It's hard to tell now, but we've decided to remain friends.
Ruby Adams It's no one's fault, but this might take time.
G12 - Comfort a heartbroken friend (Int)
Andy Chen Ruby said you and Emma split up. Is that true?
Tim Davis That's true. I'm done with Emma.
Andy Chen I'm sorry to hear that. I thought things had gotten better.
Tim Davis No such luck. Actually, it was Emma who wanted to end our relationship.
Andy Chen Oh, I'm sorry! I don't know what to say.
Tim Davis Never mind. I know I was dumped.
Andy Chen I can only imagine what you're going through, but I'm always here for you.
Tim Davis Thanks, dude! I really need someone to talk to today.
Andy Chen Let's have a drink. Today sucks, but tomorrow will be better.
Tim Davis Yeah, time heals all wounds.
67
HE1 - Ask about one's physical state (Fundamental)
Robert Emily, are you okay?
Emily I am a little dizzy.
Robert You must be tired.
Emily Maybe. Could we take a rest for a while?
Robert Sure, I'll get you some water.
Emily Thanks, Robert.
H01 - Don't feel well (Int)
Daniel Miller Katie, you look tired. Are you ok?
Katie Miller (cough) I don't feel so good. I've got a headache and a sore throat.
Daniel Miller I guess you've caught a cold. Have you checked your temperature?
Katie Miller Not yet. Could you go get me the thermometer?
Daniel Miller Here it is. Let me take your temperature.
Katie Miller So what does it say?
Daniel Miller Oh my gosh, you are running a high fever.
Katie Miller No wonder I am shivering a little bit.
Daniel Miller You should take a sick day and see a doctor.
Katie Miller Ok, I will. Don't worry.
H02 - Go to see a doctor (Int)
Doctor Ms. Miller. Your throat is infected.
Katie Miller No wonder, it's really sore. I also have a terrible headache and feel dizzy.
Doctor Do you have any other symptoms?
Katie Miller Yes, I have a runny nose and my whole body aches.
Doctor When did you begin to feel sick?
Katie Miller I was fine yesterday, but woke up with a sore throat this morning. Have I got
a cold?
Doctor I think you have the flu. That's why you suddenly started running a high fever
and feel so sore.
Katie Miller So what should I do?
Doctor Just drink lots of water and take plenty of rest. I'm going to write you a
prescription. Are you allergic to any medication?
Katie Miller No. Not that I can think of.
68
H03 - Have a physical examination (Adv)
Dr. Jones Mr. Miller, let's take a look at your health report. First, you've gained some
weight this year and reached a BMI of 29.
Daniel Miller Yes, I know. I had more business dinners this past year, and couldn't find time
to get much exercise.
Dr. Jones A high BMI will lead to some weight-related diseases, especially
cardiovascular disease.
Daniel Miller I understand what you're talking about. I will keep an eye on that.
Dr. Jones Ok. Let's see. Your pressure blood is 118 over 73 and your heart rate is 80.
All at a healthy level.
Daniel Miller How did the blood test turn out? I'm worried about my blood sugar level.
Dr. Jones Ok. Blood test? Blood sugar, white blood cell count, and cholesterol are all
within the normal range.
Daniel Miller I'm glad to hear that. That's a relief.
Dr. Jones The urinalysis, the chest X-ray and the abdominal ultrasound reports show
that all is well.
Daniel Miller Is there anything in particular I should pay attention to?
Dr. Jones Be more careful about your diet and get regular exercise. And don't forget to
have your annual physical at the same time next year.
Daniel Miller Good enough. Thanks a lot, Dr. Jones.
H04 - Go jogging (Int)
Daniel Miller Good morning, Jeffrey. How are you doing?
Jeffrey Taylor Hey, Daniel! It's only 6:30. Do you always get up so early?
Daniel Miller No, not really. I'm going to start jogging regularly.
Jeffrey Taylor How come you suddenly want to jog?
Daniel Miller I just had my annual physical, and my doctor told me to lose some weight.
Jeffrey Taylor No kidding. You don’t look out of shape.
Daniel Miller Well, I am. The body fat scale says I am overweight.
Jeffrey Taylor All right. I guess I should join you. I need to burn some calories, too.
Daniel Miller Absolutely. If I have someone to jog with, I should be able to keep it up.
Jeffrey Taylor Ok, I'll give you a call tomorrow around 6:30 and we can go jogging together.
Daniel Miller Great. See you then.
69
H05 - Apply for membership at a sports center (Int)
Desk Clerk Good morning, sir. May I help you?
Jeffrey Taylor I'm thinking about doing some workouts to keep fit. Do you offer any training
classes?
Desk Clerk Yes, you can take strength training classes.
Jeffrey Taylor I heard you adapt classes to meet different level of fitness.
Desk Clerk That's right. We'll assess your physical fitness and tailor a work-out plan for
you.
Jeffrey Taylor So can I start working out with a personal trainer?
Desk Clerk Yes, when you become a member, you can begin your personal training.
Jeffrey Taylor What're the membership fees?
Desk Clerk We offer membership for one month, half a year and one year, with different
pay plans for each.
Jeffrey Taylor I'm afraid one year's too long for me.
Desk Clerk You can try one-month membership first. It's only $99.
Daniel Miller Okay, I'll sign up this.
H06 - Chat about workouts (Adv)
Katie Miller Hello, Jeffrey. I didn't know you are working out here.
Jeffrey Taylor Hi, Katie. What brings you here? Are you working out, too?
Katie Miller Not yet, but I'm planning to take exercise courses. Don't you go jogging with
Daniel every morning?
Jeffrey Taylor Yeah, I used to, but I've given it up. It's too hot even in the early morning. I'd
rather run on a treadmill.
Katie Miller I see what you mean. That's the same with me. I don't like to jog in the
street, either.
Jeffrey Taylor What courses did you have in mind?
Katie Miller Maybe some aerobics first. How about you?
Jeffrey Taylor I'm doing workouts with a trainer. He arranged a one-month workout plan for
me.
Katie Miller That sounds pretty efficient. What are you doing exactly?
Jeffrey Taylor I start with barbell curls, leg presses, and some lat pulldowns.
Katie Miller Wow, I can't wait to see what you achieve in a month.
Jeffrey Taylor Me, too. I hope I can get in better shape.
70
H07 - Sign up for an exercise course (Basic)
Desk Clerk Good evening, what can I do for you?
Katie Miller Hi, I'm interested in some exercise courses.
Desk Clerk Here's the schedule for this term. We have lots of fitness programs.
Katie Miller I'd like to do some aerobics first.
Desk Clerk If you like high intensity workouts, you can try kickboxing.
Katie Miller Kickboxing might be too much for me.
Desk Clerk Maybe you can start with our body sculpting class. It's not so rough.
Katie Miller Is it a cardio workout?
Desk Clerk Nope, it's non-cardio. If you prefer a cardio workout, you can take a Cardio
Sculpt.
Katie Miller That sounds better to me. I'll take this.
H08 - Let's eat healthy food (Adv)
Katie Miller Dan, you're pigging out on beer and chips again.
Daniel Miller Actually, this is the first time in a week. But I know these're junk food.
Katie Miller You just had fried chicken yesterday. I'm concerned about your health.
Daniel Miller Don't worry. I remember what Dr. Jones advised me to do. I'll watch my diet.
Katie Miller I understand those chips are really addictive. It's not easy to break that habit.
Daniel Miller I'll try to snack on fruit and vegetables instead.
Katie Miller We need to try to avoid fatty foods and high-calorie stuff, too.
Daniel Miller Well, I guess the best way is to cook at home. The food served in restaurants
is usually too salty and greasy.
Katie Miller Okay, let's cook a healthy meal together at least twice a week.
Daniel Miller That's a good idea. We can start this Saturday.

  • 4. 4 In an effort to find new and innovative ways to teach English as a second (or foreign) language, many are coming upon AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) to supplement language education. As we found with the introduction of computers, and then the wave of tablets (iPads and the like), if there is not a compelling reason to incorporate these devices, and if content is not available to support learning, then time and money can soon be wasted. To that end, let’s look at need and efficacy, as we discuss the big question… Why is VR needed for language study? Virtual reality offers up some compelling reasons as to why it is a technology uniquely suited to both classrooms and self-study at home. Speaking practice Language teachers are not always available, and one-on-one time with students is limited Student affect Attending to student emotional well-being with regards to anxiety, risk-taking, motivation and so on Self-directed, self-paced learning Need to have more opportunities for student agency and control over their own learning, and pacing Effective scene-setting Learners need to “get out of the classroom” and into a different scene, even virtually More instances Whether through reading, writing, listening or other means, we need to increase exposure to language Build confidence There is a need to experience certain situations to increase confidence for future interactions I hear, I forget. I see, I remember. I do, I understand. Confucius, Chinese philosopher and reformer (551 BC to 479 BC)
  • 5. 5 Allows for focused concentration, deeper thinking Distraction-free Work at your pace, on what interests you Agency Voice recognition allows for more speaking Speaking practice Build confidence in a safe, judgement-free environment Judgement-free This creates an open and engaged learner, exactly what we want Enjoyment Textual, aural, spatial and visual resources in one Multimodal Total immersion allows for a sense of time & place Experience Be connected with your instructor through reports Data & analytics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l9E7872V9g “Sometimes, the initial hook into something makes all the difference, and virtual reality is a really great hook.” Washington University researcher Don M. • 6. 6 The Veative ELL Series was designed in such a way as to leverage each of the key elements described on the previous pages. It is true that any VR learning app will “wow” students, engage them, and take them to another world. These are the basics which can be gained through VR. However, that cannot be enough. This series was built on a few, key precepts:  Speaking practice is important, and a skill that students cannot typically work on alone  Leveling is important, both for continuous engagement and efficacy  Rich content for a variety of students and levels (plenty to do)  Remove distractors to allow for concentrated focus on the target language  Create a judgement-free zone to allow for free expression and risk taking  Work from the phoneme, to key words, to sentence, to conversation  Consistent variety (different voices and accents, different places and vocabulary) Why device matters This series was built for the Veative EduPro VR headset, for a number of reasons. The EduPro was built for education, and not as a consumer/gaming product repurposed for education. This is a key distinction. The EduPro offers the largest storage space of any mobile VR on the market, in a controlled environment made for the classroom, and learning. There are a number of very nice devices on the market, and all of them work or play in a similar fashion. However, the key question which needs to be asked is this… “Am I looking for the latest device that everyone is talking about, or am I looking for the best and most effective content in which to engage my learners?”
  • 7. 7 Who is this for? The target user is a 2nd language (English) learner between the ages of 15-24. This is not meant as a foundational course, and this better serves learners with some English ability, looking for opportunities to expand their vocabulary, work on sound production and encounter model dialogues spoken by native speakers. As the target audience is comprised of learners with some ability in English, the bulk of the lessons are geared toward intermediate level students, who are ready to take on a more active, speaking role. The VR allows for this, utilizing speech recognition even when offline! Among the four skills most associated with language learning, speaking is the most problematic to learn on one’s own, because of the need for help from an instructor, or a native speaker. The VR allows a unique opportunity to work on this skill in a judgement-free environment, away from prying eyes and ears. Students are placed in realistic scenes, allowing for repetitive work using voice recognition. Here are some key elements:  An environment free from judgement (a truly personal experience)  Immediate access to a variety of scenes and settings  Voice recognition allows for vocalization and speech practice  Learner agency and a sense of presence  Instant feedback on pronunciation and speech  Virtual scenarios which allow for confidence building (practice till you’ve got it!)  4 levels, from Fundamental to Advanced  Reading, writing and listening can be studied in isolation, but speaking practice cannot… until now How to use this series This was intentionally made as a self-study tool, to work on speaking skills, vocabulary development, and confidence. Because there is speaking practice which uses a mic, it is best to have some space between students. This is best used for in Language Labs, English circles or clubs, libraries (in a separate room), after-school use and so on. An average school would purchase 5-10 devices and allow students to sign them out and practice. Usage is tracked via analytics, ensuring that these are used for the right purpose.
  • 8. 8 Introduction This VR English Language Learning series was developed to provide learners with speaking practice, vocabulary exposure and confidence while enjoyably experiencing a number of scenarios in which communication is required. • 9. 9 The VR Study Room There are four major functions which may be found in the study room. From left to right, these consist of: • Word Practice • Short Sentences for Daily Use • Courses/Lessons (including conversation practice) • Dialogue Quiz In the study room, you will meet Monica, who will act as your personal assistant. Monica will show the functions and help to guide you.
  • 10. 10 Word Practice Starting from the left is Word Practice. This lets you get to know some of the key words that will be used in the exercises, and practice saying them. To begin, click the bookcase, or Word Practice. You will be given two choices. Conversation Words, shown here, are key words. You click the word and it will be spoken by Monica. You will then say the word. Automatically, Monica will say the word again, and this will be followed by the word you said, which has been recorded. This allows you to hear what you sound like. You can then listen again, re-record, or go on to the next word.
  • 11. 11 Conversation Words differ in that an image is shown with the word, to contextualize that vocabulary item. You click the word and it will be spoken by Monica. You will then say the word. Automatically, Monica will say the word again, and this will be followed by the word you said, which has been recorded. This allows you to hear what you sound like. You can then listen again, re-record, or go on to the next word. Sentence Practice You will get a chance to practice some short sentences which are often used in daily life. There are five sentences for you to practice. Click Sentence Practice, as shown below The sentences will be presented to you, spoken and then you will repeat. Monica will then let you know if your pronunciation and intonation were correct. If so, there is instant feedback (Perfect!). If it is not a good sentence, you will get a chance to Try Again. There are 5 sentences presented each time (from a bank of 110 sentences).
  • 12. 12 Lessons (with Conversation) This exercise allows for conversation practice with voice recognition. Click on the blue book (Lessons/Courses) to proceed. You will get the following choices. Choose Conversation to continue. (Selecting Phonetic Symbol will provide pronunciation practice. See the section on Pronunciation to learn more about that process.)
  • 13. 13 From within this screen, you will find a menu of categories on the left. Select one category and there are a variety of scenarios to choose from. (Notice the level of the dialogue on the top-left corner of each scenario.) Pro Tip: The conversations are leveled. The tags at the top-left of each conversation box indicate the level. Start with Fundamental, then Basic, Intermediate, and then challenge yourself with Advanced level conversations. Each higher level is longer, and has more difficult words and grammar.
  • 14. 14 Select the scene and then click the PLAY button (center) to start the dialogue. In each lesson, the dialogue will be modeled. Listen and pay attention to the characters. Pro Tip: Use the left and right arrows to the side of the boxes to find more scenarios based around that category topic.
  • 15. 15 When the conversation ends, you will be given a choice to play either character. You will then embody that person and read their part of the dialogue shown on the screen. Click here to Play Amanda Now you will speak directly with Doris. When there is a MIC icon on the screen, it is your turn to talk (you do not need to click that icon or any button… just speak). You will be given feedback on your reply Pro Tip: Speak clearly and ONE TIME only. The mic will record your voice and then compare again a native speaker. All of that happens in 1-2 seconds (unless it is a long passage). Just say once, and then be quiet.
  • 16. 16 When you are finished, you will see how many of the tasks you have done. You will need to do this a few times to get all 5 stars. To get those, you will need to play each of the characters, do their role perfectly and so on. Repetition is a very good thing, and this series encourages a lot of repetition, which leads to fluency. Experiment with these options, in the box, to turn on and off the text on the screen, and so on. We are always looking for ways for you to challenge yourself when learning English! When finished with this section, click the BACK button on the controller to return to the category page, or keep clicking the BACK button to get back to the Study Room (with Monica).
  • 17. 17 Quiz The Quiz is a listening/speaking test, which you will find by clicking on the paper & pencil. There are a series of 5 questions (random questions) which will be spoken. After each question, you will then be given a multiple choice of 4 answers, from which you will need to SPEAK your answer. There is an immediate score after each question.
  • 18. 18 Listen to the question carefully… Choose the best answer, and SAY the answer. If correct, it will be shown in green. If not, it will be shown in red. Your performance will be scored. 5/5 is perfect, but 4/5 is still excellent! Click the arrow to try another quiz. Click the door to return to the Study Room (with Monica). Pro Tip: When you see the MIC, you need to speak. You do NOT need to click/hold the button or icon, just say it once, and then be quiet (as the VR records your voice and checks your answer).

Do you offer any training classes? Desk Clerk Yes, you can take strength training classes. Jeffrey Taylor I heard you adapt classes to meet different level of fitness. Desk Clerk That's right. We'll assess your physical fitness and tailor a work-out plan for you. Jeffrey Taylor So can I start working out with a personal trainer? Desk Clerk Yes, when you become a member, you can begin your personal training. Jeffrey Taylor What're the membership fees? Desk Clerk We offer membership for one month, half a year and one year, with different pay plans for each. Jeffrey Taylor I'm afraid one year's too long for me. Desk Clerk You can try one-month membership first. It's only $99. Daniel Miller Okay, I'll sign up this. H06 - Chat about workouts (Adv) Katie Miller Hello, Jeffrey. I didn't know you are working out here. Jeffrey Taylor Hi, Katie. What brings you here? Are you working out, too? Katie Miller Not yet, but I'm planning to take exercise courses. Don't you go jogging with Daniel every morning? Jeffrey Taylor Yeah, I used to, but I've given it up. It's too hot even in the early morning. I'd rather run on a treadmill. Katie Miller I see what you mean. That's the same with me. I don't like to jog in the street, either. Jeffrey Taylor What courses did you have in mind? Katie Miller Maybe some aerobics first. How about you? Jeffrey Taylor I'm doing workouts with a trainer. He arranged a one-month workout plan for me.
  • 70. 70 H07 - Sign up for an exercise course (Basic) Desk Clerk Good evening, what can I do for you? Katie Miller Hi, I'm interested in some exercise courses. Desk Clerk Here's the schedule for this term. We have lots of fitness programs. Katie Miller I'd like to do some aerobics first. Desk Clerk If you like high intensity workouts, you can try kickboxing. Katie Miller Kickboxing might be too much for me. Desk Clerk Maybe you can start with our body sculpting class. It's not so rough. Katie Miller Is it a cardio workout? Desk Clerk Nope, it's non-cardio. If you prefer a cardio workout, you can take a Cardio Sculpt. Katie Miller That sounds better to me. I'll take this. H08 - Let's eat healthy food (Adv) Katie Miller Dan, you're pigging out on beer and chips again. The food served in restaurants is usually too salty and greasy. Katie Miller Okay, let's cook a healthy meal together at least twice a week. Daniel Miller That's a good idea. We can start this Saturday.
