Vayishlach 1st Aliyah (Gen 32)
4 Then Ya‘akov sent messengers before him to his brother ‘Esav
in the land of Se‘ir, the field of Edom. 5 He also commanded
them saying: “Thus you shall say to my master ‘Esav: ‘Your
servant Ya‘akov says thus, I have sojourned with Lavan and
stayed there till now. 6 I have cattle and donkeys and flocks
and male and female servants and I have sent to inform my
master, that I may find favour in your eyes.’ ”

7 The messengers returned to Ya‘akov saying, “We came to your
brother ‘Esav, and now he is coming to meet you, and four
hundred men are with him.”
8 Then Ya‘akov was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided
the people that was with him, and the flocks and herds and the
camels, into two groups;

9 for he said, “If ‘Esav comes to the one group and attacks it,
then the group that is left shall escape.”
10 Then Ya‘akov said, “O Elohim of my father Avraham, and
Elohim of my father Yitz’chak, ‫יהוה‬ who said to me, ‘Return to
your land and to your relatives, and I will prosper you,’

11 I am unworthy of all the kindness and of all the truth which you
have shown to your servant; for with my staff only I crossed
this Yarden, but now I have become two groups. 12 Deliver me,
I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of ‘Esav, for I
fear him, that he shall come and smite me, and the mothers
with the children.

13 For you said, ‘I shall certainly prosper you and make your
descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted
for multitude.’ ”

Vayishlach 2nd Aliyah (Gen 32)
14 So he spent the night there, and took of that which came to
his hand a present for his brother ‘Esav: 15 two hundred
female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and
twenty rams, 16 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows
and ten bulls, twenty she donkeys and ten he donkeys. 17 He
gave them into the hand of his servants, every herd by itself,
and said to his servants, “Pass on before me, and put a space
between herds.”

18 He commanded the one in front, saying, “When my brother
‘Esav meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you
belong, and where are you going, and for whom are these
before you?’ 19 then you shall say, ‘These belong to your
servant Ya‘akov. It is a present sent to my master ‘Esav, and
behold, he himself is behind us.’ ”

20 And he commanded also the second, and the third, and all
those who followed the herds, saying: “In this word shall you
speak to ‘Esav when you find him. 21 And you shall say, ‘Also,
behold, your servant Ya‘akov is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will
appease him with the present that is going before me, and
afterwards I will see his face, perhaps he will accept me.”

22 So the present went on before him, and he himself spent that
night in the camp.
23 And he arose during that night, and took his two wives, and
his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford
of the Yabok. 24 And he took them and sent them across the
stream. And he sent over what was his. 25 And Ya‘akov was
left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.

26 When he saw that he could not prevail against him, he
touched the socket of his hip so the socket of Ya‘akov’s hip
was dislocated as he wrestled with him. 27 And he (the
messenger) said, “Let me go, for dawn is breaking.”
But he (Ya‘akov) said, “I will not let you go unless you have
blessed me.”

28 So he said to him, “What is your name?”
And he said, “Ya‘akov.”
29 And he said, “Your name will no longer be called Ya‘akov, but
Isra’el, because you have commanding power with a
messenger of Elohim and with men, and you have prevailed.”

30 And Ya‘akov asked and said, “Now tell me your name.”
And he said, “Why is it that you ask for my name?” And he
blessed him there.

Vayishlach 3rd Aliyah (Gen 32)
31 So Ya‘akov called the place P’ni-El [face of El], for he said, “I
saw Elohim face to face, and yet my life was preserved.”
32 And the sun rose for him as he passed P’ni-El, and he was
limping on his hip. 33 Therefore to this day the sons of Isra’el
do not eat of the displaced tendon, which is on the socket of
the thigh, because he touched the socket of Ya‘akov’s thigh, in
the hip sinew.

1 Ya‘akov lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, ‘Esav was
coming, and with him were four hundred men; so he divided
the children among Le’ah, and Rachel, and the two
maidservants. 2 He put the maidservants and their children in
front, and Le’ah and her children next, and Rachel and Yosef
last. 3 And he himself went on ahead of them and bowed down
to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

4 And ‘Esav ran to meet him and embraced him; and he fell on
his neck and kissed him. And they wept. 5 And he lifted his
eyes and saw the women and the children. And he said, “Who
are these to you?” And he said, “The children with whom
Elohim has favoured your servant.”

Vayishlach 4th Aliyah (Gen 33)
6 Then the maidservants and their children came near and they
bowed down. 7 And Le’ah and her children came near and they
bowed down. And afterward came Yosef near and Rachel, and
they bowed down.
8 And he said, “What do you mean by all this company that I
met?”
And he said, “These are to find favour in the eyes of my master.”

9 But ‘Esav said, “I have enough, my brother. Let what you have
remain yours.”
10 Thereupon Ya‘akov said, “No, please! If indeed I have found
favour in your eyes, then receive my present from my hand, for
I see your face, which is like seeing the face of Elohim, and
you have received me favorably.

11 Please take my blessing that has been brought to you, for
Elohim has favoured me and because I have everything.” And
he prevailed upon him, and he took it.
12 Then ‘Esav said, “Let us depart and we will go; and I will go
before you.”

13 But he said to him, “My master knows that the children are
weak and that the flocks and herds which are nursing their
young are a care to me. And if they are driven hard one day, all
the flocks shall die. 14 Now let my master go on before his
servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the
livestock that is before me and according to the pace of the
children, until I come to my master, to Se‘ir.”

15 ‘Esav said, “Let me leave with you some of the men who are
with me.”
But he said, “What need is there? Let me find favour in the eyes
of my master.”
16 So ‘Esav returned on that day on his way to Se‘ir. 17 Ya‘akov
went to Sukkot, and built for himself a house and made booths
for his livestock. Therefore the place is called Sukkot [shelters].

18 And Ya‘akov came safely to the city of Sh’khem, which is in
the land of Kena‘an, when he came from Paddan-Aram, and
camped before the city. 19 And he bought the portion of the
field where he had pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, the
father of Sh’khem, for a hundred kesitas. 20 There he erected
an altar and called it El-Elohei-Yisra’el [El, the Elohim of
Isra’el].

1 Now Dinah, the daughter of Le’ah, whom she had borne to
Ya‘akov, went out to see the daughters of the land. 2 When
Sh’khem the son of Hamor the Hivi, the prince of the land, saw
her, he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her. 3 And his
heart was deeply drawn to Dinah the daughter of Ya‘akov, and
he loved the girl and spoke kindly to her. 4 And Sh’khem spoke
to his father Hamor saying, “Get me this girl as a wife.”

5 Ya‘akov heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah, but his
sons were with his livestock in the field; so Ya‘akov kept silent
until they came in.
6 Then Hamor the father of Sh’khem went out to Ya‘akov to
speak with him.

7 Now Ya‘akov’s sons had come in from the field when they
heard it. And the men were grieved, and they burned fiercely,
because he had done a senseless deed in Isra’el by lying with
Ya‘akov’s daughter—and such a thing ought not to be done.
8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “My son Sh’khem his
being has a liking for your daughter. Please give her to him for
a wife.

9 Intermarry with us; and give us your daughters and take our
daughters for yourselves. 10 And you can dwell with us; and
the land shall be open before you. Dwell, trade in it, and have
property in it.”
11 And Sh’khem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me
find favour in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask
me.

12 Impose upon me a high bride price and gift, and I will give
according as you ask of me, but give me the girl for a wife.”
13 Thereupon, Ya‘akov’s sons answered Sh’khem and his father
Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. 14
They said to them, “We cannot do this matter, to give our sister
to a man who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to
us.

15 Only on this condition we will agree to you, if you will become
as we be, that every male of you be circumcised. 16 Then we
shall give you our daughters and we shall take your daughters
for ourselves. And we shall dwell with you and become one
people. 17 But if you will not listen to us to be circumcised, we
shall take our daughter and go.”

18 Their words seemed good to Hamor and Sh’khem, the son of
Hamor. 19 The young man did not delay to do the thing,
because he was delighted with Ya‘akov’ s daughter, and he
was the most respected in all his father’s household. 20 So
Hamor and his son Sh’khem came to the gate of their city, and
they spoke to the people of their city, saying,

21 “These men are friendly with us; therefore let them dwell in the
land and trade in it; and the land behold it is large enough for
them. We will take their daughters for ourselves as wives, and
we will give them our daughters. 22 Only on this condition will
the men agree to dwell with us, to become one people: that
every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

23 Then shall not their livestock, their property and all their
beasts be ours? But let us consent to them, and they will dwell
with us.”
24 All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and
his son Sh’khem, and every male, all who went out of the gate
of his city, was circumcised.

25 Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain,
that two of Ya‘akov’s sons, Shim‘on and Levi, Dinah’s brothers,
each took his sword and they came upon the city with
confidence, and they killed every male. 26 They killed Hamor
and his son Sh’khem with the edge of the sword and took
Dinah from Sh’khem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Ya‘akov
came upon the slain and plundered the city that had defiled
their sister.

28 They took their flocks and their herds and their donkeys and
whatever was in the city and whatever was in the field. 29 And
they captured and plundered all their wealth and all their
children and their wives, and all that was in the houses.

30 Then Ya‘akov said to Shim‘on and Levi, “You have brought
trouble on me by making me odious among the inhabitants of
the land, among the Kena‘ani and among the P’rizi; and my
men being few in number, they shall join together against me
and smite me, and I and my household shall be destroyed.”
31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a whore?”

1 Then Elohim said to Ya‘akov, “Arise and go up to Beit-El and
settle there, and make an altar there to El, who appeared to
you when you fled from your brother ‘Esav.”
2 So Ya‘akov said to his household and to all who were with him,
“Remove the gods of the foreign nations which are in your
midst, and cleanse yourselves and change your garments.

3 And let us arise and go up to Beit-El, and I will make an altar to
El, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been
with me wherever I have gone.” 4 So they gave Ya‘akov all the
gods of the nations that were in their hands and all their
earrings that were in their ears, and Ya‘akov hid them under
the oak that was near Sh’khem.

5 Then they departed, and the fear of Elohim was upon the cities
that were around them so that they did not pursue Ya‘akov’s
sons.
6 And Ya‘akov came to Luz (that is, Beit-El), which is in the land
of Kena‘an, he and all the people who were with him.

7 He built an altar there, and he called the place El-Beit-El [El of
Beit-El], because there Elohim had revealed himself to him
when he fled from his brother.
8 Now D’vorah, Rivkah’s nurse, died and she was buried below
Beit-El under the oak. So it was named Alon-Bakhut [oak of
weeping].

9 And Elohim appeared to Ya‘akov again when he came from
Paddan-Aram, and blessed him. 10 Elohim said to him, “Your
name is Ya‘akov. You will no longer be called Ya‘akov; but
Isra’el will be your name.” And he named him Isra’el.

11 And Elohim said to him, “I am El Shaddai; be fruitful and
increase. A nation and a company of nations shall come into
existence from you, and sovereigns shall come forth from your
descendants.

12 The land that I gave to Avraham and Yitz’chak I will give it to
you, and I will give the land to your descendants after you.” 13
Then Elohim went up from him in the place where he had
spoken with him.
14 Ya‘akov set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with
him, even a stone monument, and he poured out a drink
offering on it; he also poured oil on it.

15 Ya‘akov called the place where Elohim had talked with him
Beit-El.
16 Then they journeyed from Beit-El, and there was still some
distance to come to Efrat, Rachel began to give birth and she
had great difficulty. 17 And it came to pass, when she was in
great difficulty, the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid, for
you have another son.”

18 And it came to pass, as her life departed—for she died—that
she named him Ben-Oni [son of my grief]. But his father called
him Binyamin [son of the right hand, son of the south].
19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Efrat (that is,
Beit-Lechem). 20 And Ya‘akov set up a pillar over her grave,
that is the monument of Rachel’s grave to this day.
21 Isra’el moved on and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-‘Eder.

22 And it came to pass while Isra’el was living in that land, that
Re’uven went and slept with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and
Isra’el heard of it.
And so, the sons of Ya‘akov were twelve:
23 The sons of Le’ah:
Re’uven, Ya‘akov’s firstborn,
and Shim’on, Levi, Y’hudah, Yissakhar and Z’vulun.

24 The sons of Rachel:
Yosef and Binyamin.
25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant:
Dan and Naftali.

26 The sons of Zilpah Le’ah’s maidservant:
Gad and Asher.
These are the sons of Ya‘akov, who were born to him in Paddan-
Aram.
27 Ya‘akov came to his father Yitz’chak, to Mamre, Kiryat-Arba
(that is, Hevron), where Avraham and Yitz’chak had dwelt. 28
The days of Yitz’chak were a hundred and eighty years.

Vayishlach 6th Aliyah (Gen 35-36)
29 And Yitz’chak breathed his last and died and was gathered to
his people, being aged and satisfied of days. And his sons
‘Esav and Ya‘akov buried him.
1 And these are the generations of ‘Esav (that is, Edom).
2 ‘Esav took his wives from the daughters of Kena’an: ‘Adah
daughter of Eilon the Hitti, and Oholivamah daughter of ‘Anah
and granddaughter of Tziv‘on the Hivi—

3 also Basmat daughter of Yishma‘el, sister of N’vayot.
4 ‘Adah bore Elifaz to ‘Esav, and Basmat bore Re’u’el, 5 and
Oholivamah bore Ye‘ush, and Ya‘lam and Korach. These are
the sons of ‘Esav who were born to him in the land of Kena‘an.

6 And ‘Esav took his wives, his sons and his daughters and all
the beings of his household, and his livestock and all his
beasts and all his possessions that he had gained in the land
of Kena‘an, and went to another land away from his brother
Ya‘akov. 7 For their possessions were too great for them to
dwell together; and the land where they were strangers could
not support them because of their livestock.

8 So ‘Esav dwelt in the hill country of Se‘ir (‘Esav, that is, Edom).
9 And these are the generations of ‘Esav the father of Edom in
the hill country of Se‘ir.

10 These are the names of ‘Esav’s sons: Elifaz, the son of
‘Esav’s wife ‘Adah, Re‘u’el the son of ‘Esav’s wife Basmat.
11 The sons of Elifaz were Teman, Omar, Tzefo, Ga‘tam and
K’naz.
12 And Timnah was the concubine to Elifaz, son of ‘Esav, and
she bore to Elifaz, ‘Amalek. These were the sons of ‘Adah, the
wife of ‘Esav.

13 And these are the sons of Re‘u’el:
Nachat, Zerach, Shammah and Mizah. These are the sons of
Basmat, the wife of ‘Esav.
14 And these are the sons of Oholivamah daughter of ‘Anah,
daughter of Tziv‘on, the wife of ‘Esav; she bore to ‘Esav:
Ye‘ush, Ya‘lam and Korach.

15 These became the chiefs of the sons of ‘Esav:
The sons of Elifaz, ‘Esav’s firstborn:
Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Tzefo, Chief Kenaz, 16 Chief
Korach, Chief Ga‘tam, Chief ‘Amalek. These are the chiefs of
Elifaz in the land of Edom. These are the sons of ‘Adah.

17 And these are the sons of Re‘u’el the son of ‘Esav:
Chief Nachat, Chief Zerach, Chief Shammah and Chief Mizah.
These are the chiefs of Re‘u’el in the land of Edom; these are
the sons of Basmat, the wife of ‘Esav.
18 And these are the sons of Oholivamah ‘Esav’s wife:
Chief Ye‘ush, Chief Ya‘lam, Chief Korach. These were the chiefs
that came of Oholivamah, daughter of ‘Anah, ‘Esav’s wife.

19 These are the sons of ‘Esav, and these are their chiefs (he is
Edom).

20 These are the sons of Se‘ir the Hori, the inhabitants of the
land:
Lotan, Shoval, Tziv‘on and ‘Anah,
21 Dishon, Etzer and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Hori,
the sons of Se‘ir, in the land of Edom.
22 The sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam, and the sister of
Lotan was Timnah.

23 And these are the sons of Shoval: ‘Alvan, Manachat and
‘Eival, Sh’fo and Onam.
24 And these are the sons of Tziv‘on: Ayah and ‘Anah he is ‘Anah
who found the springs in the wilderness when he fed the
donkeys for his father Tziv‘on.
25 And these are the children of ‘Anah: Dishon and Oholivamah
the daughter of ‘Anah.

26 And these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Yitran
and K’ran.
27 These are the sons of Etzer: Bilhan, Za‘avan and ‘Akan.
28 These are the sons of Dishan: ‘Utz and Aran.
29 These are the chiefs of the Hori: Chief Lotan, Chief Shoval,
Chief Tziv‘on, Chief ‘Anah,

30 Chief Dishon, Chief Etzer and Chief Dishan. These are the
chiefs of the Hori, according to their chiefs in the land of Se‘ir.
31 And these are the sovereigns who reigned in the land of Edom
before any sovereign reigned over the children of Isra’el:
32 Bela son of B‘or reigned in Edom, and the name of his city
was Dinhavah.

33 Bela died, and Yovav son of Zerach of Botzrah reigned in his
place.
34 And Yovav died, and Husham of the land of the Temani
reigned in his place.
35 Husham died, and Hadad son of B’dad, who smote Midyan in
the field of Mo’av, reigned in his place. The name of his city
was ‘Avit.

36 Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.
37 Samlah died, and Sha’ul of Rechovot-by-the-River reigned in
his place.
38 Sha’ul died, and Ba‘al-Chanan son of ‘Akhbor reigned in his
place.

Vayishlach 7th Aliyah-Maftir (Gen 36)
39 Ba‘al-Chanan, son of ‘Akhbor died, and Hadar reigned in his
place. The name of his city was Pa’u; his wife's name was
M’heitav’el daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mei-Zahav.
40 And these are the names of the chiefs of ‘Esav, according to
their clans, according to their places, by their names:
Chief Timna, Chief ‘Alvah, Chief Y’tet, 41 Chief Oholivamah,
Chief Elah, Chief Pinon,

Vayishlach Maftir (Gen 36)
42 Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mivtzar, 43 Chief Magdi’el,
Chief ‘Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom, according to their
dwelling places in the land of their possession.
That is ‘Esav father of Edom.
