SOME QUESTIONS?
Ever heard about MEN AND LONLINESS?
• Have you ever felt misunderstood or judged
based solely on your exterior?
• Have known someone who seems tough /
unapproachable on the outside but has a story ?
• In management , we often focus on strategy and
results,
• How often do we consider the power of small acts
of empathy in changing perceptions & building
communities?
• Can a grumpy old man be a lesson in leadership?

Gets Longer and Longer
PLOT & OVERVIEW OF THE BOOK
It follows the life of Ove, a grumpy, yet deeply principled 59-
year-old man who has recently lost his wife, and has
decided to end his life.
His life takes an unexpected turn when new neighbors
move in—Parvaneh and her family—who inadvertently
disrupt Ove's solitary life. Through their interactions, Ove's
tough exterior begins to soften, revealing his capacity for
kindness and connection.
The novel beautifully explores themes of community, the
impact of relationships, and the importance of
understanding and empathy.
“We always think there's enough time to do
things with other people. Time to say things
to them. And then something happens and
then we stand there holding on to words like
'if'.”
“You only need one ray of light to
chase all the shadows away,”
“He was a man of black and white. And she
was color. All the color he had.”
“But sorrow is unreliable in that way. When
people don’t share it there’s a good chance
that it will drive them apart instead.”
“It's been six months since she died. But Ove
still inspects the whole house twice a day to
feel the radiators and check that she hasn't
sneakily turned up the heating.”
“A job well done is a reward in its own
right,”
“They never had much, but they always
had enough.”
“We fear it, yet most of us fear more than
anything that it may take someone other than
ourselves. For the greatest fear of death is
always that it will pass us by. And leave us there
alone.”
Key take aways from the book
1. Leadership and Community: The book portrays the transformation of a
grumpy, lonely old man into someone who becomes a pillar of his community. It
illustrates how small acts of kindness and understanding can lead to strong
community bonds, reflecting the importance of emotional intelligence and
leadership in a professional context.
2. Character Development and Change Management: Ove's journey symbolizes
change & adaptability. His initial resistance to the changing world around him how
& he eventually comes to terms with new people & situations mirrors the challenge
of managing change in an organization.
3. Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: The book teaches valuable lessons about
understanding others' perspectives and looking beyond the surface. It highlights
the importance of empathy and emotional intelligence, both key aspects of
modern leadership and management.

AI detectors for
writing
assignments
Advantages and disadvantages with Gen AI tools
Advantages of Gen AI tools
• Gen AI tools help users organize their thoughts
• Help the users write efficiently and elegantly
• They augment the writing process and speed
Disadvantages of Gen AI tools
• Their word choice tends to be more generic
• Also formulaic at times(pause fillers, conversational speech)
AI written detection tools
What do they look for
• Repetitive words
• Awkward phrasing
• Unnatural, choppy flow
Success rates
• Turnitin has 4% False Positive rate
• Copyleaks founder Alon Yamin claims that the tool is not 100% accurate it
should only be used to identify trends in students’s work.
• GPTZero founder Edward Tian says “Every AI detector as blind spots”
• Writing work of people that have neuro spectrum disorder or that are
neurodivergent could end up as AI written work
Bloomberg tests using two leading AI detectors on a sample of 500 essays
written before the release of ChatGPT showed that the services falsely
flagged 1% to 2% of the essays as likely written by AI.
Detection: A Bloomberg test of a service called Hix Bypass
found that a human-written essay that GPTZero incorrectly
said was 98.1% AI went down dramatically to 5.3% AI after
being altered by the service.
