Celtic was originally the dominant language but Latin had a strong influence on vocabulary and grammar during Roman rule. As the Roman Empire declined, Germanic tribes including the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes began migrating to Britain and their language, Anglo-Saxon, became dominant and evolved into Old English over time.
