Charles Cowap gave a presentation at the RICS Rural Conference identifying new opportunities for land management that chartered surveyors could pursue. He discussed 10 key areas for new land uses including food, timber, minerals, and environmental sustainability. Cowap proposed that surveyors adopt new ways of appraising land values beyond just market value, providing ecosystem services valuations. He envisioned surveyors becoming "ecosystem entrepreneurs" by facilitating new markets for biodiversity offsetting, carbon sequestration, and other ecosystem services. Overall, Cowap argued that surveyors must learn new skills and collaborate in new ways to make the most of emerging prospects for sustainable land management.
