DEFINITIONS OF TYPES OF LOVE
Eros= romantic or "erotic love." It is based on strong feelings toward another. It usually oc-
curs in the first stages of a man-woman "romantic" relationship. This love is based more on physi-
cal traits.
Example: a person says he has "fallen in love" for a woman, because "she looked like an an-
gel” or a woman "falls in love" for a guy because he is intelligent, is from a good family or has
good manners.
Philos= a love based on friendship between two people
Philadelphia is also known as the “City of Brotherly Love.” Look at the name.
Agape= unconditional love
Example: Think of the kind of love that a mother has for her child
or the love we show our parents, taking care of them and helping them in their old age. Just
like they took care of us when we were young, it is done with or without benefit in return.

Members Names :
Inference Activity: Love Songs and Verses from Plays
Get in groups of three or four. Read and briefly discuss the lines on your handout. Use inference (what
you read plus what you already know) to figure out whether the lines show:
* romantic love (eros)
* brotherly love or friendship (philos)
* selfless/godly love (agape)
EXAMPLE:
When Romeo sees Juliet he says, “What light through yonder window
breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.”
Type of love: Romantic love (eros)
Proof: Romeo is saying that Juliet is beautiful and that he is attracted to her
Now, give it a try.
You love me…
You keep me on my feet happily excited
By your cologne, your hands, your smile, your intelligence
You woo me, you court me…
“He Loves Me” by Jill Scott
Type of love:
Proof:
2. In Sophocles’ play Antigone, Ismene asks Antigone to just forget about burying their brother’s body
because if she does the new king of their country will sentence her to death. Antigone feels
that burying her brother is a moral imperative or something that she must do.
Type of Love:
Proof:
3. If everyone cared and nobody cried
If everyone loved and nobody lied
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride
Then we'd see the day, when nobody died
“If Everyone Cared” by Nickelback
