This document analyzes Chaucer's Wife of Bath character and explores whether she empowers women. It introduces research questions around Chaucer's intent in creating her and if he advocates for women. The thesis is that through allowing the Wife's experience to override male authority, including the loathly lady motif, Chaucer experiments with gender equality. The document then examines the Wife's prologue and tale, how she discounts male views of women based on her marriages. It analyzes how the loathly lady represents women gaining sovereignty and compares the Wife to Christine de Pizan, another women's advocate of the time.
The document proposes an assignment analyzing how The Wife of Bath challenges gender roles of her time. The analysis will: 1) summarize The Wife of Bath's tale; 2) provide context on Chaucer's social circles; 3) describe accepted female norms; and 4) show how The Wife of Bath refutes ideals of female piousness. Who was Saint Valentine? There Are Several Possible Ones . . .Bob Mayer

Valentine's Day has origins in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, in which men would strike women with goat hides to make them more fertile. Over time, the Christian church turned the festival into St. Valentine's Day and associated it with romance. Today, Valentine's Day is a major commercial holiday focused on exchanging gifts like cards, candy, and flowers between loved ones. While it celebrates romantic love, it is also driven heavily by marketing and consumerism.
The document discusses the occult influences present in C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia series. It argues that many of the magical creatures in Narnia, like fauns and nymphs, represent actual pagan gods from Greek and Roman mythology that were worshipped through idolatry. It also notes that some scenes, like midnight dances in the forest, depict rituals celebrating demons of lust, drunkenness and false prophecy. The author concludes that even sincere Christians can be deceived, and that Lewis may have been influenced by the occult despite his faith, showing the importance of avoiding contact with demonic spirits.
Valentine's Day originated from the ancient Roman fertility festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on February 13-15. During Lupercalia, goats and dogs were sacrificed and their skins were used to make loincloths and whips. Men would then run through the streets whipping women with the bloody whips to promote fertility. Over time, Christianity replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine's Day on February 14th, though the origins of the saint are unclear. Modern Valentine's Day traditions focus more on love and romance rather than the animal sacrifices and whipping of Lupercalia.
St. Valentine was a third century Roman priest who secretly married couples after the emperor banned marriage for young men, believing single men made better soldiers. Valentine was arrested and put to death for defying this decree. While the origins of Valentine's Day are obscure, it may have been established by the Christian church on February 14th to Christianize the ancient Roman pagan fertility festival of Lupercalia. By the Middle Ages, Valentine's Day had become a day for romance. The mass production of Valentine's Day cards in the 19th century helped popularize the holiday in America and other countries as a day for expressing love and affection.
Louis XIV assumed control over France in 1661, declaring himself the absolute monarch and representative of God. He cultivated the image of the "Sun King" and centralized power around himself. While an effective ruler, he spent lavishly on projects like expanding Versailles, depleting national resources.
In Blood Red Road, the King in the Dustlands has modeled himself after Louis XIV, centralizing power and creating an empire through his army and use of the drug "chaal" to control slaves. He captures the character Lugh, whose midwinter birth and name are references to the Celtic god Lugh and ritual human sacrifice, to maintain his rule as the Sun King and assert his divine right to power.
Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated annually on February 14th. One legend states that Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome during the 3rd century who secretly married lovers, defying the Emperor's decree. For his actions, Valentine was put to death. Another story suggests he was killed for aiding Christians in prison. According to tradition, before his death he wrote the first valentine greeting to a girl he fell in love with. While the truth is murky, Valentine became a popular saint known for romance. Today on Valentine's Day, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones in his honor.

3. It is just less than 24 hours to Valentine…
Maybe yours may be more than 24 hours.
But, by the time where I’m located. It is less
than a day to Val’s day.
It ‘s the Lover’s day.Right?
The excitement is intense. The buzz is on.
Almost every one, young and old as
waiting in anticipation for the D-day.
Why Valentine Day? I have asked myself
many times and I was inquisitive to know
why the need to celebrate a special day of
4. I have heard some stories about how Valentine came about.
But. I was not satisfied with what I got.
Why?
This s because since I knew what a world we are, I have
noticed that Valentine goes beyond mere expression of love.
There has been many other ugly sides and heartbreaks during
and after Val’s day.
If the day was a day that was said it was in history, then why
would such of love should result in some many wild, obscene
and erotic acts?
More questions…
5. History told us…At least that was what we were told
or read. That Val’s day was a commemoration of the
heroic acts of a man or should I say a saint called
Valentine.
Though the story comes with different twist, but the
bottom line was that Valentine died for love. The
aftermath of martyrdom for love attracted the
Christian community, especially the leaders and they
christened February 14th Valentine ‘s day.
But is that all there is to the origin of Valentine’s
DAY?
Wait… I discovered there is more…
6. Here is the true story behind Valentine that has be hidden form the
whole world. Or the ecclesiastical decided to hid from us.
Valentine the martyred saint never existed. It was a cooked up story to
turn the pagan celebration of love to a Christian celebration.
The real story and the truth was that the day for the celebration of love
started right even before the birth of Jesus Christ.
It started way back in Roman paganism. It was then called
LUPERCALIA.
Lupercalia was a day to honor a deified hero-god by the name
Lupercus.
Lupercus was called wolf-hunter. Why?
In Roman history, there was a time when the people were attacked and
killed by wolves. The people need help and there was no one to help
them from this monstrous beast. Then Lupercus came to their rescue
by killing the wolves and then earned the name Lupercus.
7. Lupercalia was a day men gathered together for merry making and fun
and more important is that they guys gather together the manes of
