4. FATHER’S DAY- GERMANY
• Same day as Ascension day (40 days after Easter)
• Like Mother’s day, but for fathers
• Official holiday since 1934
• Usually involves alcohol, especially for men
• Often spend with family
• Often men do hikes together with friends, usually they have a handcart
with them in which they transport beer which they drink while walking

6. VALENTINE’S DAY – GERMANY
• 14. of February
• Originally a religious holiday
• English emigrants brought it with them to the USA, during World War II soldiers
from the USA brought it to the western part of Germany
• Became popular in Germany because of florists and people selling candy
• Usually people give flowers, often roses, to their beloved ones
• Celebrated in many countries (e.g. USA, South Africa, Japan, South Korea,
China, Brasil, Italy, …)
• In the beginning it was celebrated because of St. Valentin who died as a
martyr after illegaly getting people married
