The document summarizes the Incredible Edible Brighouse project, which aims to transform an urban space in the deprived Vale Street area into a community food growing and learning space. The project intends to provide opportunities for locals to grow and harvest fresh produce, build community, and promote health and well-being. It supports the council's green space strategy and the Grow Wild initiative, seeking to beautify unused spaces, increase biodiversity, and source food locally and seasonally in an environmentally friendly way.
CoCo San Sustainable Farm is a 14.8 acre farm on public buffer land right in the middle of a heavy industrial area. The farm uses recycled water, high in nitrogen, which is otherwise discarded into Suisan Bay (part of San Francisco Bay). We grow fresh produce using sustainable agricultural methods and hydroponic greenhouse growing to provide produce to the Food Bank and Schools.
Introduction to Permaculture - FELC February 8th 2014Vince Kirchner
Basic of permaculture provided to a group of Master Gardeners, and environmentally aware citizens. Key concepts were presented with a discussion around each topic. This is a precursor to a full PDC class starting in April. www.greatlakespermaculture.com

Minor add ons like temporary blinds or cheap window blinds can contribute to proper insulation by making the home not too hot during summer and not too cold during winter.
Why is permaculture a valuable alternative to conventional "factory" farming? Upon answering this question, this presentation highlights examples of a healthy permaculture system. This was used as a 30 minute "Intro to Permaculture" class taught to college engineers.

Food (agriculture) production and distribution is estimated to cause approximately 25% of global warming (UN), which is causing drought in many areas. Agriculture uses 80% of the ground and surface water, increasing the water shortage. AgLantis is creating an urban farm right in the middle of heavy industry and will use hydroponic greenhouse production which yields as much as 40 times the produce using 10% of the water. The farm is on unused public buffer land, uses recycled agricultural grade water and is an innovate, replicable solution that dramatically decreases the carbon and water footprint of food production and distribution. Using recycled water high in nitrogen and phosphorus also eliminates the need for fossil fuel based fertilizers. The UN estimates 40% of agriculture is lost from farm-to-mouth. Growing in urban centers dramatically decreases that loss, much of which is due to long distane transportation.

2. Starting Point
The aim of the project is to provide
a community growing learning and
green space within the community.
Transforming the space into an
urban food-growing landscape,
based on collaboration, where
anyone who wants to has the
opportunity, space and support to
grow and harvest fresh fruit and
vegetables.
To create a vibrant, diverse food
culture is a vital aspect of our
healthy communities in a deprived
area such as Vale Street
5. Project Aims
The project will enrich lives,
providing us good food, making
good friends and increasing
numbers of usage promote all the
benefits of local food growing
– community building,
environmental, physical and
mental health and well-being,
local enterprise and the
economy, address issues of
sustainability
– reducing food miles, oil
dependency, ecological and
carbon footprints and increase
biodiversity within an urban
environment such as Vale Street .
8. Vale Street Project
Incredible Edible Brighouse
aim to empower the
community to retain and reuse
our green spaces. turning
unloved spaces into beautiful,
practical areas by growing
herbs, fruit and vegetables ties
in with Calderdale Council’s
Green Spaces Strategy -
“To achieve high quality green
spaces across Calderdale
including spaces that are
nationally recognised for their
quality and attractions”.
9. Grow Wild
The Vale Strete project also supports
“Calderdale Corridor’s of Colour” which
links into the Nationwide Grow Wild
Project sponsored by Kew Gardens.
Increasing the quantity of suitable
pollen- and nectar rich flowers can
provide more food for pollinators.
Pollinators also require a range of other
resources, and this depends on the insect
group, eg suitable nesting sites for bees
and wasps; particular (native) plants
larval stages of some insects such as
butterfly and for moth caterpillars to feed
on.
10. Why vegetables at vale street
Getting hold of fresh fruit and
vegetables at truly affordable
prices can be a real challenge in
deprived neighbourhoods.
Involve Foster community sprit
and engagement at Vale street
and food produce 'ecologically'.
The project would Involve mainly
plant-based food ,and Increase
the consumption of food sourced
as locally within Vale street ,
seasonally and directly as
practicable.
The project would use resources
in an environmentally friendly
and low-carbon way and Promote
knowledge within the
community
