VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Institute of Language and Culture Studies (ILCS), a campus of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), is
currently seeking a lecturer for its English Department. This opportunity is for a year-long contract beginning
September 2014 (a late start is negotiable for the right candidate), with a possible option to renew. ILCS’s
English Department takes an integrated approach to the study of English as a foreign language (EFL), using
literature, communication, debate, and other subjects as the content and context through which we teach the
language. We are committed to collaboration and innovation and welcome ideas for new, effective approaches.
Duties and Responsibilities
1) Plan, teach and assess BA level EFL in areas that include English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Literature,
Professional Communication, Critical Theory, and Debate
2) Provide students with opportunities (inside and outside of class) to improve their confidence in using the
English language in formal and academic settings, and practice their language and study skills
3) Coordinate extra-curricular activities on occasion
4) Participate in staff and institute meetings, initiatives, and functions
5) Assume additional responsibilities commensurate with candidate’s level of experience and qualifications, and
as agreed upon with the ILCS Director
Required Qualifications
1) MA in TESOL preferred, but MEd or MA with TESOL training acceptable
2) Cross-cultural skills, an interest in Bhutanese language and culture, and a willingness to learn from an
unfamiliar working environment; experience in developing countries an asset
3) Flexibility and a willingness to adapt in a professional manner to unexpected situations and sudden changes
4) Relevant experience that demonstrates a record of success and professionalism
5) Ability to work well with and mentor Bhutanese colleagues and assistant lecturers
6) Native-speaker proficiency in English
Provided by the Institute of Language and Culture Studies
1) A local salary (approx. 34,000 Ngultrum, or $600 per month), which should cover all basic living expenses
2) Assistance in obtaining all paperwork required for work in Bhutan
3) 2 months paid vacation per year (between semesters in winter)
4) Assistance in finding suitable and affordable accommodation, possibly shared with other faculty members
5) Access to Bhutan’s free national health care system (medical evacuation insurance is still highly recommended
for emergencies)
All other expenses will be the responsibility of the lecturer, and working conditions will be equivalent to those of
regular ILCS faculty members.

About the ILCS Campus in Taktse
 ILCS is Bhutan’s foremost center for preserving and promoting this Buddhist country’s national language and
culture. The institute is located in the remote and scenic Trongsa district, approximately an 8 hour drive from
the capital city of Thimphu. The relatively new campus is situated in a small village named Taktse at an
elevation of 2160m (7088′).
 As the nearest town for shopping and banking, Trongsa is 23 km from Taktse. This is normally a 45 minute
drive alongside steep cliffs and with occasional delays due to road work or landslides (particularly during
monsoon season). There are always opportunities to go to town on weekends with colleagues or in a taxi.
 You will be living a rural lifestyle and therefore should be in good physical condition so that you can move
around the local environment on foot.
 You can expect little access to foreign food (American and European foods are difficult to find). Typically,
Bhutanese food is spicy, but very fresh and tasty. It is not difficult to be a vegetarian in this country, but
severe allergies and alternative diets can be difficult to accommodate.
 The ILCS campus is new and still under construction in parts. Living conditions are basic but adequate.
Access to the internet continues to improve at the campus; however, occasional power outages, internet
difficulties, and other problems are experienced from time to time.
 The weather in Taktse is variable throughout the year. Bhutan has an active monsoon season, so rain, fog,
and cool weather can be expected during the summer months. When the sun is out, however, the
temperature warms, and views are generally magnificent. Winters can be chilly, with no central heating in
buildings, although space heaters are usually purchased for homes. It is recommended that foreigners bring
layered clothing and appropriate footwear.
 The administation attempts to be supportive, but most faculty members and students are not familiar with
outside cultures, so flexibility is expected in order to adjust to the Bhutanese lifestyle. Keep in mind, however,
that Bhutanese people are typically friendly, open, and helpful, and very much interested in interaction.

  • 1. རིག་གཞུང་མཐོ་རིམ་སློབ་གྲྭ་སྟག་རྩེ Royal University of Bhutan Institute of Language and Culture Studies Taktse, Trongsa, Bhutan VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT The Institute of Language and Culture Studies (ILCS), a campus of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), is currently seeking a lecturer for its English Department. This opportunity is for a year-long contract beginning September 2014 (a late start is negotiable for the right candidate), with a possible option to renew. ILCS’s English Department takes an integrated approach to the study of English as a foreign language (EFL), using literature, communication, debate, and other subjects as the content and context through which we teach the language. We are committed to collaboration and innovation and welcome ideas for new, effective approaches. Duties and Responsibilities 1) Plan, teach and assess BA level EFL in areas that include English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Literature, Professional Communication, Critical Theory, and Debate 2) Provide students with opportunities (inside and outside of class) to improve their confidence in using the English language in formal and academic settings, and practice their language and study skills 3) Coordinate extra-curricular activities on occasion 4) Participate in staff and institute meetings, initiatives, and functions 5) Assume additional responsibilities commensurate with candidate’s level of experience and qualifications, and as agreed upon with the ILCS Director Required Qualifications 1) MA in TESOL preferred, but MEd or MA with TESOL training acceptable 2) Cross-cultural skills, an interest in Bhutanese language and culture, and a willingness to learn from an unfamiliar working environment; experience in developing countries an asset 3) Flexibility and a willingness to adapt in a professional manner to unexpected situations and sudden changes 4) Relevant experience that demonstrates a record of success and professionalism 5) Ability to work well with and mentor Bhutanese colleagues and assistant lecturers 6) Native-speaker proficiency in English Provided by the Institute of Language and Culture Studies 1) A local salary (approx. 34,000 Ngultrum, or $600 per month), which should cover all basic living expenses 2) Assistance in obtaining all paperwork required for work in Bhutan 3) 2 months paid vacation per year (between semesters in winter) 4) Assistance in finding suitable and affordable accommodation, possibly shared with other faculty members 5) Access to Bhutan’s free national health care system (medical evacuation insurance is still highly recommended for emergencies) All other expenses will be the responsibility of the lecturer, and working conditions will be equivalent to those of regular ILCS faculty members.   • 2. རིག་གཞུང་མཐོ་རིམ་སློབ་གྲྭ་སྟག་རྩེ Royal University of Bhutan Institute of Language and Culture Studies Taktse, Trongsa, Bhutan About the ILCS Campus in Taktse  ILCS is Bhutan’s foremost center for preserving and promoting this Buddhist country’s national language and culture. The institute is located in the remote and scenic Trongsa district, approximately an 8 hour drive from the capital city of Thimphu. The relatively new campus is situated in a small village named Taktse at an elevation of 2160m (7088′).  As the nearest town for shopping and banking, Trongsa is 23 km from Taktse. This is normally a 45 minute drive alongside steep cliffs and with occasional delays due to road work or landslides (particularly during monsoon season). There are always opportunities to go to town on weekends with colleagues or in a taxi.  You will be living a rural lifestyle and therefore should be in good physical condition so that you can move around the local environment on foot.  You can expect little access to foreign food (American and European foods are difficult to find). Typically, Bhutanese food is spicy, but very fresh and tasty. It is not difficult to be a vegetarian in this country, but severe allergies and alternative diets can be difficult to accommodate.  The ILCS campus is new and still under construction in parts. Living conditions are basic but adequate. Access to the internet continues to improve at the campus; however, occasional power outages, internet difficulties, and other problems are experienced from time to time.  The weather in Taktse is variable throughout the year. Bhutan has an active monsoon season, so rain, fog, and cool weather can be expected during the summer months. When the sun is out, however, the temperature warms, and views are generally magnificent. Winters can be chilly, with no central heating in buildings, although space heaters are usually purchased for homes. It is recommended that foreigners bring layered clothing and appropriate footwear.  The administation attempts to be supportive, but most faculty members and students are not familiar with outside cultures, so flexibility is expected in order to adjust to the Bhutanese lifestyle. Keep in mind, however, that Bhutanese people are typically friendly, open, and helpful, and very much interested in interaction.
