He was part of the effort to roll out Docker in production at Shopify in 2014 and is still working around the same domain, but today the focus is on Shopify’s internal PaaS based on k8s.

The 7 deadly sins of micro services
This document discusses the seven deadly sins of microservices and how to avoid them. The sins include lusting after new technology without consideration for operations, gluttony by not implementing circuit breakers, greed in creating too many small services, sloth by not properly separating services, wrath from ignoring issues in distributed systems, envy of other teams' deployment processes, and pride in thinking tests are not needed. The document provides recommendations to help address each sin such as starting small, service ownership, automated testing, monitoring, and continuous delivery practices.

As a product grows, and the infrastructure becomes more complex, the Operations team traditionally shoulders the burden of maintaining this infrastructure while deploying code from Software Engineers. Code is sometimes given to Operations with little to no information regarding how it should run or what the criteria for successful deployment is. This is not due to lack of caring, Software Engineers often lack the context themselves to provide production deployment instructions. To Software Engineers, production can be like a walled off city, filled with pathways and rooms not to be explored, guarded by Operations.
This presentation aims to provide a solution to this problem. We will address how the traditional separation of Operations and Software Engineers slows innovation, and redefine their relationship -- blending responsibilities. We will examine the transition of two real teams, an Operations team and Engineering team, from complete isolation, to closer environments through virtual machines, to one cloud environment shared by all and managed with CloudFormation.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.

- 9. OBJECT STORAGE Protocol used : NFS file system => formatted partition (usable) I. creating a partition of size specified by client II. formatting and mounting the partition on a folder. III. creating nfs server IV. client side : drive is created on client’s desktop by the name Folder_name (contents in Folder will be stored in cloud folder of server ).
- 10. BLOCK STORAGE • Protocols used are ISCSI and SCSI • Implemented with ansible. • Centralized storage. • Our own LV is used instead of hard-disk.
- 11. IAAS (InfrastructureAs A Service ) Server Side: • Qemu-kvm and virt-install is installed. • OS to client is provided without being installed in the client system. Client Side: • tigervnc is installed. • OS will be generated.
- 12. PAAS(Platform As A Service) • Provides a platform to clients to build applications and services over the internet. • We are providing an online shell for the user to write the programs in chosen language. • The output will be generated. • We are providing compiler for C and Python2.
- 13. v5arcus • We are a team of five passionate individuals. • Each of us has contributed in making this project a success. • Everyone has brought something to the table, working as aTEAM. • There was a great deal of exchanging of ideas and problem solving. • The whole team came together to perform the given tasks. • It was a good learning experience and very satisfying to bring forth this project.
- 14. Future Scope • In IAAS, adding AWS, Google cloud platform. • In PAAS adding more languages to the list. • We are going to add the functionality of Payment Gateway. • Including database to PAAS.

CONCLUSION • It increases profitability by increasing resource utilization. • Costs are driven down by delivering appropriate resources only for the time those resources are needed. • It has enabled teams and organizations to streamline lengthy processes. • Manipulate and configure applications. • High efficiency, reliability and flexibility.
