1. Computer history in Bangladesh
History of Computer Application in Bangladesh:
Computer is an electronic device which is capable of receiving information in a particular form
and of performing a sequence of operation. They are used as tools in every part of society .
Computers now-a-days are complex; there are a lot of different components inside them, and they
all serve different purposes.
The information technology sector in Bangladesh had its beginnings in nuclear research during the
1960s. Over the next few decades, computer use increased at large Bangladeshi organizations,
mostly with IBM mainframe computers. However, the sector only started to get substantial
attention during the 1990s.
The first computer in Bangladesh was an IBM mainframe1620 series, installed in 1964 at the
Dhaka center of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (later the Bangladesh Atomic Energy
Commission).Uses of computer increased in the following years, especially after the independence
of Bangladesh in 1971; more-advanced IT equipment began to be set up in different educational,
research and financial institutions. In 1979, a computer Centre, later renamed Department of
Computer Science & Engineering, was established at Bangladesh University of Engineering and
Technology (BUET); the Centre has been playing a vital role in Bangladeshi IT education since
3. its inception. Through the introduction of personal computers, the use of computers witnessed a
rapid increase in the late 1980s. In 1985, succeeding several individual initiatives, the first Bengali
script in computers was invented, paving the way for more intense computer activities. In 1995,
use of the Internet began and locally made software started to be exported.
In 1983, the Ministry of Science and Technology established a National Computer Committee to
create the required policies. The committee was also responsible to carry out programs to expand
and promote the efficacious use of the sector. In 1988, the committee was replaced by the National
Computer Board. In 1990, the ministry reformed the board and reconstituted it as the Bangladesh
Computer Council to monitor computer- and IT-related works in the country.
In 2013, it was announced that a seven-year-old Bangladeshi boy, Wasik Farhan Roopkotha,
would be listed as the "youngest IT expert" in the Guinness Book of World Records. It is a great
achievement for us,undoubtely.
This is overall about the history of computer uses in Bangladesh.Though Bangladesh has
connected with the system recently,it is going to well day by day. Wish computerization system in
Bangladesh will reach the peak of success oneday.
4. 2. Present Condition & Growth Rate
(i) Present Condition of Computer Applications in Bangladesh:
Computers are widely used now in Bangladesh keep pace with other modern countries.Computer
applications are used in these sectors in Bangladesh.
1.Edcation: Computers have its dominant use in the education field which can significantly
enhance performance in learning. Even distance learning is made productive and effective through
internet and video-based classes.
2.Business: A computer has high speed of calculation, diligence, accuracy, reliability, or
versatility which made it an integrated part in all business organisations.
Computer is used in business organisations for: Payroll calculations, Sales analysis, Budgeting,
Financial forecasting, Managing employees database and Maintenance of stocks etc.
3.Communication: Communication means to convey a message, an idea, a picture or speech
that is received and understood clearly and correctly by the person for whom it is meant for.
Some main areas in this category are: Chatting, E-mail.
4.Health Care: Most of the medical information can now be digitized from the prescription to
reports. Computation in the field of medicine allows us tooffer varied miraculous therapies to the
patients.Radiotherapy wasn’t possible without computers.
5.Engineering Design: As per the title, computers aid in designing buildings, magazines, prints,
newspapers, books and many others. The construction layouts are designed beautifully on system
using different tools and software’s.
6.Entertainment: Computer applications also can be used as a form of entairtainment.
7.Banking: Today banking is almost totally dependent on computer. Banks provide the facilities
of: Banks provide online accounting facility, which includes current balances, deposits, overdrafts,
interest charges, shares, and trustee records.
In Bangladesh today computer is being used in research and educational institutions, government
and private organizations, business concerns including bank and insurance, industries, mills and
5. factories, military installations etc.Among the government offices, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics
is the largest user of computers. The Statistical Bureau at present uses computer at every phase of
preservation, processing and analyzing of data collected from various surveys including
formulation of database.
In financial institutions including banks, particularly in private banks, maintenance of database
and extension of various services are increasingly getting computer based. Computerization is also
gradually under way in government banks. Foreign banks played a pioneering role in introducing
computerized financial transactions in Bangladesh. By using computer technology, these banks
are being able to give better services to their clients by establishing links with inter-branch, inter-
bank as well as inter-continental banks.
Credit card has also become popular all over the country since inception in 1999. At present,
companies like VISA, Master Card are dealing with this computer based Credit Card Service
which is a safe and easy device of monetary transactions. Very recently a number of foreign banks
have introduced Electronic Fund Transfer Service.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department is now able to provide faster and more accurate weather
forecast by analyzing meteorological data collected from satellites and formulation of maps
through computer. This is enabling people to take preparations during times of natural hazards and
decreasing the volume of damages to much extent. Besides, analyses relating to weather and
climatic changes are also being possible through computer modeling.
Bangladesh Election Commission has taken up a project to prepare a flawless voter list with the
help of computer.
Different government and non-government organizations are using Data Base Application
Software to meet their respective requirements. Though these software were imported from abroad
in the past, at present various local software companies are being engaged in most of the cases to
make these customizedsoftware. The management and running of large scale and important
industrial concerns of the country are now too much extent dependent on computer technology;
particularly those industries where it is essentially important to keep intact the qualitative standard
of the goods produced. For example, pharmaceutical industries. In these factories, qualitative
standard of drugs is being ensured with the help of computer.
6. The IT industry is a relatively new sector in the country's economy. It is an important growth
industry. The Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) were
established in 1997 as the national trade body for software and IT service industry. Starting with
only 17 member companies, by 2009 membership had grown to 326. In a study among Asian
countries by Japan International Cooperation Agency in 2007–08, Bangladesh was ranked first in
software and IT services competitiveness and third in competencies, after India and China.
We are developing day by day in computer technology. It is now an on going process.
(ii) Growth Rate of Computer Applications in Bangladesh:
Personal computers are self-contained computers designed to be used by a single individual. It is a
multi-purpose computer whose size, capabilities, and price make it feasible for individual use. PCs
are intended to be operated directly by an end user, rather than by a computer expert or technician. It
is cheaper than supercomputer,minicomputer.
It has the latest values, historical data, forecasts, charts, statistics, an economic calendar and news
for Personal computers (per 100 people) in Bangladesh.
Computer Users Growth Rate
The Internet penetration has also grown to 21.27 percent in 2012, up from 3.2 percent three years
prior. The total number of Internet Subscribers has reached 61.288 million at the end of March,
2016. As the Internet usage increases, the government expects the IT sector to add 7.28 percent to
GDP growth by 2021.
7. 3. Problems and Prospects of Computerization in Bangladesh
Problems of Computer Applications in Bangladesh:
(i) Lack of expert personnel to operate and can’t do major repair of computers.
(ii) Lack of high speed internet.
(iii) Cost of the computer in relation to the purchasing power of the masses.
(iv) Lack of a good knowledge about computer.
(v) Data Security is also a major problem of computer's application in Bangladesh.
(vi) Graduates haven’t sufficient idea how to operate.
(vii) Financial loan systems are difficult by which they can starts up.
Future prospect of Computer Applications in Bangladesh:
Information Technology is a growing sector now in Bangladesh. It is growing day by day.
There are nearly 100 software houses, 35 data entry centers, thousands of formal and informal IT
training centers and numerous computer shops. The Government has declared IT as a thrust sector
and that computer training Centre will be set up in each divisional and district headquarters of
Bangladesh. Import of computer hardware and software is now duty free.A tremendous activity is
going on in every sector including e-commerce, e-governance, computer networking, Internet, web
browsing, web applications, multimedia product development etc.
Banks can support professionals: Well-trained Bangladeshi IT professionals can start their
business like Data entry, Web development, Multimedia, ISP and Medical Data Transcription
services, Cybercafe and IT Training Centre. They can easily get financial help from bank. A
number of government banks have already started credit programs to encourage the entrepreneurs
in software industry. Some private banks are using our locally developed software too. However,
due to some constraints the outcome is not up to the expectation.
8. Government are giving initiatives: The Government of Bangladesh has taken some important
initiatives to develop our IT sector. Still we are waiting to see a fruitful change in our Information
Technology. However, some remarkable steps of government are highlighted for information.
• IT has been declared as a thrust sector.
• Waiving all taxes and duties from import of computer hardware and software.
• Hundred percent remittances of profit and capital gains for foreign investors without any
approval.
• BTTB's implementation of DDN service.
Human resources are eager: Human resource is the most important component for a country, for
IT industry. Bangladesh has a huge educated, unemployed youth force with the ability to read and
write English. The country can take advantage of its immense manpower to train and prepare
programmers and IT professionals. Government has already started a project to develop Computer
Programmers in Bangladesh. All the universities are offering one year post-graduate Diploma
course for the graduates. Our unemployed educated persons can take this opportunity to build their
career as IT professionals.
Youths are enthusiastic: Young generation in Bangladesh is very enthusiastic and has correctly
identified IT as the future of the country. There are numerous computer clubs, computer festivals,
programming contests, web design contests; IT related seminars and discussions in many cities of
the country. There are about 16 magazines and four digital IT magazines are being published
monthly and some daily newspapers publish IT pages once/twice a week. A few of the magazines
are in collaboration with other international magazines; however, most of these are Bangladeshi
origin. There are a few interactive sites and forums. A number of business Centre’s and cybercafes
have started up recently. Most of these businessesCentre’s provide e-mail; e-mail to fax, phone
fax services and cyber cafes offer Internet browsing.
E-commerce has spread: Recently there has been a surge in E-commerce activities in Bangladesh.
There are E-commerce related seminars and symposiums in the country almost every day and all
the major training Centre’s are offering courses on E-commerce. Government is now formulating
laws for e-commerce to enhance the business rapidly and smoothly.
9. IT Park and international market: Some private organizations have already started to work for
setting up IT Park and IT villages in the country. Some investors are foreigners and they are very
much interested to build Bangladeshi students as IT professionals. They have already started to
commission their views. Our Bangladeshi students can take this chance and hit the international
job market in the IT field. There are lot of scopes of working and entering into the international
market. Just we have to take proper initiatives. Bangladeshi IT professionals have a good demand
in international IT job market, which has been proved by some of our BUET students.
Finally,we can say that computer applications in Bangladesh are developing day by day.One day
it will cover its area in every part of whole country.
