Replacing `import` with `accio`! Compiling Pythons with Custom Grammar for the sake of a joke!
In Python, overwriting builtin functions is fairly easy. You can even do it in the interpreter! But can you overwrite a statement, like import, just as easily? Let's go on an adventure, discovering how the import statement works, and how Python statements are defined in the CPython source code. We'll face some consequences of bootstrapping, and, to get our custom Harry Potter-themed Grammar to work, we'll have to compile a Python to compile a Python.
The document discusses odd behaviors in Python related to identity, mutability, and scope. It provides examples testing the identity and mutability of various Python objects. It also discusses issues that can arise from using mutable default arguments and provides tips on how to avoid these issues, such as using None as a default instead of a mutable object.
Slides from my talk at the NYC Cassandra meetup on 4/29/15.
Abstract:
You might think that knowledge of how your database performs writes, reads, and other internal operations is arcane knowledge for ops witches, but no! This knowledge can give you tools to dramatically improve the performance of your application. For example, at Venmo, we halved response times on our slowest endpoint by better understanding the implications of our read and write patterns and tuning our Cassandra cluster accordingly.
In this talk, we'll clarify what is meant by "in Cassandra, writes are fast, but reads are slow." We'll cover how a node performs writes, reads, and compaction, and we'll share some lessons learned about choosing the right compaction strategy for your query patterns.

Visual identity and branding are influenced by elements like logos, colors, typefaces, and consistent implementation across all touchpoints. The goal of branding and visual identity programs is to clearly identify companies and control costs while delivering functional and emotional benefits to customers.
Thunderbolt is a middleware integration suite that enables real-time transactions between disparate systems. It has several key components, including a transaction engine, business process modeler (BPM), and runtime monitor. The BPM allows for intuitive drag-and-drop design of business processes and transactions. The runtime monitor provides central administration and configuration of the entire integrated system. Thunderbolt is well-suited for implementing web services as it handles transaction logic, integration, and other requirements.
This document proposes a wireless e-voting system that uses retinal scanning and radio waves to identify voters and transmit votes remotely. The system aims to (1) authenticate voters using retinal scans to prevent corrupted officers from manipulating votes, (2) transmit vote counts via radio waves to a remote secure server rather than storing them locally where machines could be tampered with, and (3) allow votes to be cast from any location via mobile devices and the internet to make the process more accessible and efficient.
This document describes the goals and approach of a social reconstructionist middle school. The school aims to unite students, teachers, and the community to promote social justice and address inequities. The curriculum focuses on intellectual and emotional development by relating lessons to students' surroundings in society. Students are taught civic engagement and community service. The school environment models eco-friendly practices and diversity, with rules and activities focused on respect, recycling, and helping the local community.
This document summarizes how speed cameras detect vehicle speed using Doppler radar technology. Speed cameras transmit radar signals that bounce off vehicles and return to the camera. The difference in frequency of the transmitted and returned signals, known as the Doppler effect, allows the camera to calculate the vehicle's speed. Speed cameras were introduced in the 1990s and have been shown to reduce road accidents and casualties by deterring speeding. The document discusses how Doppler radar works, the basic components and principles of speed cameras, and their effectiveness even in poor weather conditions. It stresses the importance of public awareness about how speed cameras promote road safety.

Planning is key when starting an online engagement process. Consider your goals, questions, and how the community will be involved from the beginning. Choose feedback tools that match how much decision making power you want the community to have. Ask clear, engaging questions and create visually appealing content like videos and images to provide information and maximize participation. Promote the engagement daily by responding to comments, providing updates, and thanking the community for their feedback when finished.
The Mobile Effect-Measuring New Shopping Behaviors & AttitudesRyan Rothe
The document discusses research on mobile shopping behaviors and attitudes. It finds that smartphone users check their phones around 150 times per day. Mobile devices have become a mainstay in everyday life and a key part of the consumer purchase process. Effective mobile research requires making mobile devices a focus, not just a data collection tool. Today's path to purchase is more complex as consumers use multiple devices. The document advocates combining self-reported survey data with passive behavioral data captured from mobile phones to gain a more comprehensive understanding of consumer behavior.
Are You Ready For M-Commerce? -Steven Leitch, Music Factory DirectAspDotNetStorefront
Stephen Leitch, Director of E-commerce at Music Factory Direct, discusses how mobile commerce is growing rapidly and will reach $14B by 2015. While mobile shopping is becoming more popular, most multichannel retailers still do not have a mobile presence. Music Factory Direct partnered with a company to build a mobile-optimized site with the goals of offering a similar look and feel to their main site while keeping it simple. Their mobile site has seen success with 5% of visitors and sales coming from mobile, higher average sale amounts, and longer browsing times on mobile.

Online surveys can be used to evaluate the usability of a website. There are five main areas of a website that should be evaluated: content, design, navigation, page layout, and features. When designing a usability survey, questions should effectively and efficiently evaluate these areas and comply with them to reliably assess user responses. Various online tools are available to help with usability testing and analysis, such as CrazyEgg, Usabilla, and Google Analytics.
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Bad UX Research But Were Afraid to...Valsplat
This document summarizes an Amsterdam meetup on March 16th, 2016 about user experience (UX) research presented by Miel de Zwart. The presentation discussed different types of UX research methods like user interviews, usability testing, and analytics. It highlighted both good practices for moderating interviews and observing users without influencing them, as well as common pitfalls to avoid. Miel also provided suggestions for how to shift from reactive UX research to more proactive research that drives design changes, such as conducting frequent user tests and integrating UX insights directly into development processes.
Fitzgerald Publishing recently has contracted our research group to investigate and develop an interface for their entertainment database. The client states that their niche in the market will be their focus on expert reviews.
This document summarizes insights from a study of 112 iPhone users in Australia. It finds that while initial iPhone purchases are often about the device itself, users quickly realize it can do much more than expected. Many report the iPhone has significantly changed how they work, entertain themselves, and connect with others. They favor apps that uniquely fulfill needs conveniently. Though free apps are most common, users still expect major brands to engage with them via the smartphone through high-quality apps or mobile websites.
