Urbanisation is the process of societal transformation from a predominantly rural to an urban population, characterized by both an increase in urban residents and a shift to non-agricultural employment. In India, 'urban' is defined as settlements with a minimum population of 5,000, where at least 75% of the male workforce is engaged in non-agricultural activities, and a population density of at least 400 persons per square kilometer. Additionally, towns with municipal governance are classified as urban.
