This document discusses whether people are upright or backslidden based on Isaiah 1:1-4. It analyzes three aspects: independence (rebellion of spirit), ignorance (of soul), and lack of investigation (actions of body). For independence, it discusses how rebellion is independence from God. For ignorance, it discusses how God's people were destroyed for lack of knowledge. For investigation, it discusses how the people did not consider/perceive God. The conclusion is that an upright person has rejoicing in themselves, while a backslidden person must boast. The document encourages self-evaluation on one's spirit, soul, and body.

Upright or Backslidden
Text: Isa 1:1-4
Intro:
1Thess 5:23
23) And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly;
and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body
be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Spirit= attitude
Soul= psyche thinking
Body= actions visible to others
Gal 2:11
But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood
him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
Gal 2:14
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly
according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter
2. 2
before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the
manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why
compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
Salvation is simple but, sanctification is a
choice.
Isa 1:1-4
1) The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he
saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of
Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of
Judah.
2) Hear, O heavens,
and give ear, O earth:
for the LORD hath spoken,
I have nourished and brought up children,
and they have rebelled against me.
3) The ox knoweth his owner,
and the ass his master's crib:
but Israel doth not know,
my people doth not consider.
4) Ah sinful nation,
3. 3
a people laden with iniquity,
a seed of evildoers,
children that are corrupters:
they have forsaken the LORD,
they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto
anger,
they are gone away backward.
1) ...concerning Judah and Jerusalem…
Not “Israel and Judah”
Isa 1:5-6
5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will
revolt more and more:
the whole head is sick,
Soul= psyche thinking
and the whole heart faint.
Spirit= attitude
4. 4
6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there
is no soundness in it;
Body= actions visible to others
but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they
have not been closed, neither bound up, neither
mollified with ointment.
I. Independence
Rebellion (spirit) Isa 1:2
Rebellion is not always evidenced by a temper
tantrum, sometimes it accompanies a refined
smile and smooth cultivated words.
Isa 1:2 …I have nourished and brought up
children, and they have rebelled against me.
Isa 1:4 …they have forsaken the LORD…
1Sam 15:23
23) For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft
5. 5
and stubbornness is as iniquity
and idolatry.
Because thou hast rejected the word of the
LORD,
he hath also rejected thee from being king.
Rebellion is independence from God and his
word.
John 6:63
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth
nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are
spirit, and they are life.
John 6:66 the mark of a beast
From that time many of his disciples went back, and
walked no more with him.
John 6:67-68
67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go
away?
6. 6
68 Then Simon Peter answered him,
Lord, to whom shall we go? thou
hast the words of eternal life.
To reverse rebellion
Job 23:12
Neither have I gone back from the
commandment of his lips;
I have esteemed the words of his
mouth more than my necessary
food.
II. Ignorance
“doth not know” (Soul) Isa 1:3

know…

Holy One of Israel unto anger…

law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
King Uzziah
2Chr 26:16
But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up
to his destruction: for he transgressed against
the LORD his God, and went into the temple of
the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of
incense.

1Cor 3:16
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and
that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
1Cor 5:6
Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a
little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
2Cor 2:11
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we
are not ignorant of his devices.
We should know and major on the
fundamentals of the Bible but, if that was all
God expected us to know we would have a
pamphlet not a 66 book Bible.
1Cor 9:25 (2Tim 2:4-5)
And every man that striveth for the mastery is
temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain
a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
9. 9
Your soul will naturally strive to master
something, either sin or
scripture.

in a fault, ye which are spiritual,
restore such an one in the spirit of
meekness; considering thyself, lest
thou also be tempted.

and so fulfil the law of Christ.
