HATEOS (Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State) is considered the most important constraint of REST architectures. It requires that responses from REST APIs include hypermedia links to allow discovery of available operations and state transitions. By including these hypermedia links, REST services can have their functionality and capabilities discovered dynamically at runtime rather than being hardcoded into client applications.
