1. Construction
The construction process involves many different functions from idea to completion. In most
cases, landowners initiate construction projects, acquire the necessary land and arrange project
financing. A design team typically consists of an architect, a consulting engineer, and
specialized sub-consultants who produce detailed specifications and drawings for a project's

2. General or general contractors take responsibility for coordination of construction activities and
project management. Commercial or specialist contractors carry out work related to the various
professions, e.g. B. Mechanics, electricians and carpenters. Manufacturers and suppliers
include importers, wholesalers and retailers engaged in the manufacture and marketing of
construction products.
The modern industry
After a decline in construction activity during the Great Depression, World War II saw a
significant revival of activity in Canada. Achievements during this period included the
construction of a rubber products factory in Sarnia, ON and numerous airfields for the British
Commonwealth Air Training Plan. This rapid increase in construction during the war and the
industry's ability to complete projects quickly and efficiently marked the emergence of Canada's
modern construction industry. (See the history of the construction industry)
Construction continued to expand in the post-war period, with many individual projects
increasing in size and complexity significantly. For example, the post-war housing boom gave
rise to "project housing", including hundreds of high-rise apartments and complexes.
A new construction market developed in northern Canada with the construction of early warning
radar defenses, mining and other resource development and transportation facilities. In
southern Canada, the Trans-Canada Highway and the St Lawrence Seaway are major
construction projects.
Canada has long been known for its large hydroelectric projects. Hydropower projects have
been supplemented with thermal and nuclear power plants (see Electricity production).
After World War II, the regional breakdown of total construction by province included one-third in
Ontario, one-fourth in Quebec, and one-tenth in British Columbia. Toronto and Montreal were
the main centers of construction activity, accounting for about 25 percent of the total. During this
period, 30 percent of the total construction output was for housing construction, 40 percent for
technical infrastructure projects (such as hospitals, power plants, transportation, water systems,
etc.) and 30 percent for other building structures.
