Tohru meets the members of the Sohma family, who can transform into animals from the Chinese zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex. Some of the main characters introduced are Kyo the hot-headed cat, Yuki the cool rat who girls admire, Hatsuharu the mysterious cow with bipolarity, and Momiji the cute but angsty rabbit. Many of the characters experience inner angst and turmoil.
