Unsolved Mysteries can be interpreted in several ways such as unsolved criminal cases, unanswered questions, or unsolved scientific mysteries. In exploratory essays, the writer (you) explores three sources that take a position on a controversial issue. All three sources can take the same side of the issue or two can take the same side and one can be on the other side of the issue. For example, take this issue: “Should there be stricter copyright penalties on the Internet? For instance, all three sources explored may argue that once a person uploads a photograph on, for example, flickr.com, it becomes public domain and no copyright laws should apply. The sources explored will argue on the same side of the issue, they all answer the issue question: yes. Yet, they will present evidence that will align with their different perspectives. For example, one source may take a legal perspective and the evidence will come from legal sources; another source may take a psychological perspective and their evidence to support their position will come from psychological studies, etc. In addition, the sources must come from a variety of secondary sources: scholarly journals, magazines, and/or newspapers, and the sources cannot be all Websites.
The Purpose
In the exploratory paper, the writer identifies three sources that take the same side of the issue; this means, for each source, their thesis statements/claims are the same. In order to help the reader (students, instructor) understand each source’s argument, the writer, (you) will include a brief 2-3 sentence summary for each source that includes the writer’s thesis/claim and the reasons provided to support his or her perspective. Also, this will include an analysis of how well the reasons and evidence support their position and their perspective. This requires specific references from the work in the form of direct quotations. This last part is important. Your own opinions are not expressed at all. This is not an argument paper.
Advantages to Writing an Exploratory Paper
Exploratory papers have a number of advantages. When you view an issue from many perspectives, you gain a greater depth of understanding of it and the various views taken. Also, exploratory papers provide mutual understanding and common ground for you next stage in argument: writing your own argument paper. These sources can be used to support your side to an issue or they may be used as an opposing view to your own position. After exploring sources on an issue, you learn about the other positions on this controversial issue.
How to Write the Exploratory Paper

4. How did the built environment influence survival in positive AND NEGATIVE ways? Were there people who owed their survival to elements of the built environment? How so (specific examples)? Were there people who put their faith in elements of the built environment to tragic effect (specific examples)? How did the cultural systems of the day, perhaps as reflected by government agencies or institutions, influence the outcome? Be sure to describe any specific, physical features of the built environment that were directly related to the ability of people to survive the fire, and any specific cultural features that had similar impact.
5. Would a similar structure built today potentially suffer the same fate? Did the fire lead to any changes in either physical or cultural features in buildings built afterwards? Are you safer in buildings now (give specific reasons).
6. Did YOU like this book? Would you recommend it to others? Produce a review of it as an object of entertainment, perhaps using a review of a book in a magazine or newspaper as an example. (0.5 page max)
The overall report will be 5-6 pages in length, not counting any cover, table of contents, or appendices. You should use space-and-a half, 12 point font, 1 inch margins all around. Number your pages. Spelling, grammar, presentation will be graded.

The Aristotelian argument is the framework upon which most academic, thesis-driven
writing is based. You can use this template any time you need to take a position on a
topic.* Before getting started, make sure that your thesis is argumentative and non-
obvious. When determining how to support your thesis, try to group all of your
supporting evidence into distinct piles which have thematic similarities. Finally, develop
each claim in its own section of text, making sure that each point is proportionate to the
others. The back of this handout contains a template you can use to get started.
1. Start broad and contextualizes the argument (e.g. Why
is your topic relevant to the course content?).
2. End with a specific argumentative claim--your thesis
(e.g. “In Augustine’s Confessions, we find many personal

opt to preview the progression of your argument (e.g. “In

Develop at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this resource can assist you in developing the counterargument and refutation). Final Project, Part 2. Development of the Topic.
This part of the final project is a summary of your ongoing work on the final paper; it should include three paragraphs, one covering each selected work. You should also make sure to re-state what your subject is.
Identify how the subject you chose in Part 1 appears in three different examples, each from a different Humanities discipline (visual art, music, dance, poetry, prose, theater, film, religion). For instance, you could choose a poem, a painting and a scene from a film, all of which express and represent the theme of anger. Or, to be even more specific, if you choose the emotion of "love," the final paper could analyze and discuss love as it is expressed in Shakespeare's Sonnet 147 (literature), Boticelli's Birth of Venus (visual art), and in the ballet Swan Lake (dance).

The purpose of this assignment is to choose three important people or events in American
history through the readings of weeks 1-4 (writing assignment 1) or weeks 5-8 (writing
assignment 2.) You have some flexibility with this assignment. For example, you can
write about three important acts that the British imposed which caused the colonists to
seek independence against the mother country. Or, you could write about three important
events during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Contact your instructor if you need
guidance regarding a topic.
The assignment asks you to find a minimum of two academically credible sources (one
may be your textbook), develop a clear, focused thesis statement, and to support your
thesis with clear, insightful, consistent writing. This assignment will enhance your
research and writing skills, both of which are applicable not only to this course but to
many different careers.
You may include your own opinions and ideas as long as they reflect a solid
understanding of the reading material. For example, if you write about the presidency of
Thomas Jefferson, feel free to include your opinion as to how his ideas made the country
stronger, freer, or more prosperous, but your primary focus should be an analysis of the
factual information that you have utilized to support your thesis and main ideas.
Your ideas must be supported by information from your sources since you are using these
sources to prove your thesis. After all, the purpose of a research paper is to make a case
and to convince the reader that your writing and research supports your thesis. Whether
you quote information directly from your sources, or paraphrase, you must cite your
sources generously to give credit to the sources and to avoid plagiarism.
You may utilize one of two citation methods in your essay (depending on which method
you are most familiar): MLA or Chicago/Turabian. Your instructor will post links to web

You are expected to provide an original, carefully considered interpretation of these documents based on the historical context you have learned in the course thus far. As a response paper, it is appropriate for you to employ first-person language in your paper, however, in formulating your opinions, you must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the texts and create
a well-organized

answer all three of the following questions:
How did the planters’ paternalism serve to justify the system of slavery? Meaning, what were the arguments used to justify the existence of slavery in the south? In particular, consider the basic points made by the proslavery defense and how they justified their point of view to both southerners and non-southern audiences.
What were the lives of slaves like (including men, women and children) in the south? Consider the different types of labor systems (gang labor, task labor), and the ways in which slaves created communities and cultures that allowed them to survive in an oppressive society.
What attempts were made to resist slavery? Consider the attempts made by slaves (including rebellions, runaway tactics, etc.) as well as the attempts made by the abolitionist movement. Were these attempts successful or not?
Collectively, you should consider the ways in which the documents that you have chosen to highlight help us to understand more about the institution of slavery and this time period in history. Papers that do not answer all 3 prompts will not score well.
