1. Oklahoma Coffee Roasters – Brewing Techniques
With all the fancy alternative methods of making coffee floating
around, a once simple beverage has become slightly overwhelming. It
does not help that a new breed of hipster coffee snobs have emerged,
touting the terror of their cold brewed coffee or complicated espresso
concoctions. The time has come to get back to the simplicity that
made us fall in love with coffee in the first place. Maybe the method
does not need to be changed and upgraded. A closer look at the
details of the tried and true will elevate your favorite brew to new
heights.
The French press method of brewing coffee is a classic for a reason.
Perfecting its nuances will lead to a superlative cup of warm, roasted
goodness, as long as you pay attention. A little mindfulness is not too
much to ask, even before that first cup. It is all about quality
ingredients and precision. To start, make sure you have all of your
equipment: a clean French press, a kettle/microwave, measuring
spoons, a stirring spoon, a coffee grinder, and of course your mug.
Next come the ingredients. Use the best quality water to which you
have access - it's important. Your coffee beans should be kept in an
airtight container in a cool, dark place. Grinding the beans just before
brewing is critical to freshness. A medium grind is best for the French
press. Too fine and you will get some grainy residue, too coarse and
you will not get the maximum flavor. The golden ratio is 2 tablespoons
grounds to 6 oz of water. A pinch of kosher salt is a classy move to
deepen the flavor and take the bitter edge off.
As for the methodology, it could not be simpler. Heat water to a boil.
Grind beans. Add beans to the French press with a pinch of salt. Stir
some of the water into the grounds to eliminate dry pockets, and then
pour in the remaining water. Place the plunger on top and set your
timer to 4 minutes. Take thirty seconds to plunge your coffee and
ensure a proper emulsion; portion into your cup. Now you are set to
consume and take on the day!
