2. Chances are, you are someone who can’t get moving in the morning
without your morning coffee, or you know someone or many people
who need that first cup or two to get started. If you prefer to do
some or all of your coffee drinking at home, you have a coffee maker
that makes it all possible.
The workplace is another spot where coffee makers get a lot of use.
And if you use a coffee maker, keeping it clean and running well is a
crucial part of the process. Whether you have a big, multi-cup
brewer or you’re into single serve coffee, your coffee maker must be
clean.
3. Multi-Cup Coffee Makers
The larger, multi-cup style coffee makers tend to sit with coffee in
the pot for prolonged periods of time, but luckily keeping them
clean isn’t overly complex. To give it a thorough cleaning:
Unplug the coffee maker and let it cool down.
Use a wipe sponge to wipe down all the outside surfaces.
Fill up the reservoir with one part white vinegar and one part
water.
Remove the pot and run the coffee maker to clean the filter.
4. Multi-Cup Makers cont…
You will want to rinse your filter if it is dirty with residue.
If you don’t rinse the filter, let it sit in the pot for roughly one
hour.
pour any vinegar out of the pot and rinse it completely.
Run your coffee maker at least once more to be certain all the
build up is gone. Let the vinegar soak in the pot if the filter is clean
from the first time.
Run the coffee maker using only de-ionized water until the smell
of vinegar is gone. Wash the pot and filter basket thoroughly in
soapy water.
5. Single-Cup Coffee Makers
Single serve coffee has become very trendy among coffee drinkers,
and single-serve coffee makers are enjoying brisk sales. As the name
suggests, single serve coffee is coffee that’s brewed one cup at a
time, and many coffee lovers find they prefer it this way. Specific
cleaning instructions may vary for single-cup brewers, but generally:
Clean off all the external parts with a damp, soapy cloth that
won’t leave scratches.
If you have a dishwasher, check which parts are ok’d for
dishwasher use by the manufacturer, and wash them as instructed.
6. Single Serve Coffee cont…
Wash any parts that are not dishwasher safe by hand in the sink
with soapy water.
Clean out the exit needle if it appears as though coffee grounds
clog the needle. Use a basic paper clip or similar type tool for this
job.
It’s important to follow the instructions for your specific brand
closely, so you can keep enjoying single serve coffee just the way you
like it.
7. Significance
While you probably won’t suffer any health issues by not cleaning
your coffee maker, the flavor of the coffee will be affected. And
since the taste is such a big part of which brand you choose and what
kind of beans you use, it’s important to keep it clean so that flavor
isn’t altered.
8. Schedule
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance and
cleaning, but if there is no specific date outlined, once a month is
generally a good gauge.
Of course, if you notice deposits or oily residue or build up, feel
free to clean it sooner than one month. However, if everything is
how it should be, stick to the once-a-month schedule.
