University of Liverpool - Case Study - March 2016
1. The University of Liverpool is one of the great
centres of research, knowledge and
innovation in the world. A founding member
of the Russell Group of research-intensive
Universities, the University of Liverpool is
ranked within the top 1% of universities
worldwide. Its pioneering reputation attracts
students, experts and partners. It has 22,000
students, 5,500 staff and 195,000 alumni in 40
associations across the globe.
Background
Liverpool had an analogue telecoms
infrastructure, which was becoming expensive
to run and maintain. It’s limited functionality
was no longer meeting the university’s
requirements for collaboration, both across
the institution and with partners in the UK and
abroad. The university needed to move to a
solution which would enable adoption of new
communication tools and features, reduce the
burden of maintenance on an ageing system,
and deliver a platform for future growth. With
a large estate they needed a phased migration
plan so that there was minimal disruption in
service to users throughout the project.
Designed with the University of
Liverpool
Alternative worked closely with the University
of Liverpool to design and plan the upgrade of
the estate. Mitel’s MiVoice business platform
was deployed, with Teleworker and MiCollab
both enabled and Mitel’s Marwatch product
providing visibility and management of the
estate.
The deployment sits on top of
the Liverpool University’s own
network with between 3,500 –
4,000 handsets in the process of
being rolled out.

2. Business Outcome
Although the University of Liverpool project is
not due to complete until July 2017, there has
already been keen adoption of soft phones
and PC clients for making calls.
“Clearing” is a critical time for universities,
when remaining places on courses are filled
following the release of A Level results. In
August 2015, Clearing ran entirely over the
new Mitel infrastructure. The event was a
complete success with a notable improvement
in call quality and handling times.
The next phase for the migration will include
the launch of the mobile client, for which there
is a growing business requirement. The first
group in line to adopt the mobile app is the
School of Veterinary Science, where life is fast-
paced, with staff and students moving
between lectures, operating theatres, drop-in
surgeries, and on call during evenings and
weekends.
The mobility that the mobile client will provide
on top of the new VoIP infrastructure will
enable staff and students to be contactable on
one single number, no matter where they are
working that day, bringing a major
improvement to their daily working life.
