Universal Design aims to make products, communications, and environments usable by all people without the need for adaptation or specialized design. It has three main principles: providing multiple means of representation so that all people can understand information; multiple means of action and expression so people can navigate and express themselves in different ways; and multiple means of engagement to motivate people through varied options for participation. Universal Design for Learning specifically applies these principles to education to ensure all students can succeed as learners regardless of disabilities or other factors by reducing barriers in curriculum design.
